Starting today and running through September 13, 2012, Extra Magic Hours are offered seven days a week at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure for visitors who are staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort Hotels. This is a major change to the revised Early Admission program introduced this summer, and provides an even better incentive for vacationers to choose one of Disney's hotels for their visit.

Under the new program, hotel guests can choose to visit either Disneyland or Disney California each morning of their stay; those with park hopper tickets can visit both parks during the Extra Magic Hours period if desired. This change also addresses complaints from hotel guests that they only had early admission to DCA on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while Annual Passholders had early admission on both weekend days and also Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Annual Passholder Early Entry program and Magic Morning program remain unchanged, though both groups now share early admission with Disneyland Resort hotel guests.
Disney also announced last week that the cast member main entrance blockouts have been lifted for most dates at the Disneyland Resort. Cast members can once again use their main entrance passes to sign in family and friends on the following dates: Now through August 19, 26 through 31. The August 20 through 25 blockout dates still apply.
While Disney has removed the blockout dates, they have added a new rule that cast members may not use their Main Gate passes or sign in friends and family before 10 a.m. Disney says the restricton is to "provide a positive experience for our day Guests who enter the parks during early admission or who may be utilizing Disney’s FASTPASS Service." At Disney California Adventure, admitting cast members and their guests after 10 a.m. basically ensures they won't be able to collect a Fastpass for Radiator Springs Racers. Disney also reminds cast members that they are expected to remain with their guests during their visit.
Disneyland will commemorate its 57th anniversary on Tuesday with a brief "Celebratory Moment" at 2:30 p.m. Mickey, Minnie and other Disney characters will gather in Town Square as Walt Disney's original dedication speech is played on speakers throughout Disneyland. The characters will then lead guests and cast members in Town Square in singing "Happy Birthday" to Disneyland.
Disney's tradition of hosting Olympic athletes at the theme parks continues this Tuesday when Disneyland hosts members of the U.S. Men and Women’s National Volleyball Teams. The city of Anaheim is the official Host City of the teams, and the players are currently training at the American Sport Center a few miles from the Disneyland Resort.
The athletes, Disney characters and the All-American College Band will take part in a cavalcade along the Disneyland parade route from "it's a small world" to Main Street at 1 p.m., after which the athletes will participate in a media photo session.

Mark your calendars; November 12, 2012 through January 6, 2013 is the official holiday season at the Disneyland Resort. We know our readers like to make their holiday plans as far in advance as possible, so here are details of the two events we're most frequently asked about:
DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups, lists November 3 as the date the West Coast segments of the annual Disney Parks Christmas Parade will be taped at Disneyland. (November 4 is a back-up date in case of rain or tape delay). Based on past years, at least some of the floats from A Christmas Fantasy parade will be filmed in a procession down Main Street early Saturday morning, wirh several musical acts performing on a stage in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.
This filming usually impacts Disneyland's entertainment schedule—expect Mickey's Soundsational parade to be cancelled both days. This is also usually a good weekend for celebrity-spotting, as the special guests spend time in the parks with their families before and after taping.
While we don't expect an official confirmation for several more weeks, we expect the annual Candlelight Processional to be held December 1 and 2. Dates, performances times, narrator and availability (if any) of dining packages have not yet been announced.
Mary Kraemer, travel agent with MousePlanet sponsor Mouse Ear Vacations, alerted us to a new Disney Cruise Line offer for Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, and gave us an update that will disappoint some passengers who booked back-to-back Alaska cruises.
Disney Cruise Line is offering Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders a 25 percent discount on four California Coastal cruises aboard the Disney Wonder this fall. The seven-night cruises depart from the Port of Los Angeles, make an overnight call in San Francisco, then stop in San Diego and Ensenada, Mexico. The cruises sail September 16, 23, 30, and October 7. These are the same four cruises that Disney recently announced would feature new Pixar-themed touches, including presentations by Pixar animators, a gallery exhibit featuring the Art of Pixar, a Pixar Film Festival celebrating the 3D release of Finding Nemo, and new character appearances by Mr. Incredible, Remy, Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, and more.
The AP discount is off the prevailing rate for stateroom categories 4A through 11B.
Mary also alerted us to a problem impacting passengers who booked the final Alaska cruise of the season, departing September 3 from Seattle and planned to return to Los Angeles on the September 10 repositioning cruise departing from Vancouver. Such back-to-back bookings are popular with repeat cruisers, but Disney began alerting passengers who booked the double cruises that sailing on both cruises is a violation of the Passenger Vessel Services Act.
Disney encountered the same issue when the Wonder repositioned to Alaska in May, and their solution was to require passengers who sailed from Los Angeles to Vancouver to exit the ship with all of their luggage, and then check in and get a new stateroom assignment for the first Alaska cruise of the season (normally, passengers with back-to-back bookings remain in the same stateroom for both cruises, and may leave their luggage on board when they go to check in for the second cruise).
For the return trip, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has notified Disney that the stateroom switcheroo won't work, and that passengers may not sail on both cruises. Last week, Disney began contacting passengers and travel agents who had booked these back-to-back cruises, and moving or canceling one of the two cruises. Disney is providing some compensation to passengers affected by this change, but we don't have specific details.
At the end of the 2011 Alaska cruise season, Disney avoided the situation entirely by scheduling the Wonder for a brief refurbishment between the final Alaska cruise and the repositioning trip back to Los Angeles.

...We're hearing that the Princess Fantasy Faire closes on August 12 so work can begin on the Fantasyland Theater. While the new Fantasy Faire is still under construction at the former Carnation Plaza Gardens, the princess meet-and-greet area is relocating to the terraced viewing area in front of "it's a small world." Disney used this area earlier this year for the Chinese New Year festival, and often hosts Villains meet-and-greets there during HalloweenTime. No word on plans for the Fantasyland Theater, only that the venue will be used for some sort of stage show starting next year.
...Advance purchase tickets are on sale today for Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland. Disney has still not released any details of the Happiest Haunts Tour or Ultimate Experience package, but we'll post updated information as we get it. Additional event information is available on the official event website, on the Annual Passholder section of the Disneyland Resort Web site (registration is required to view this content), or by calling (714) 781-4400.
...Registration for the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, January 20, is now officially filled, though you may still be able to register by signing up with a charity group, or by purchasing a package through an official travel operator.
...Pin traders should check out the new Come out and Trade events hosted daily at the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree through the end of August. Every day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., pin traders can trade Disney pins with cast members from a wagon wheel-themed pin board, play Pin Tac Toe, or try your hand at For the Fishing of Pins and Panning for Gold. The Big Thunder Ranch pin cart also sells a variety of Disney pins.
...TouringPlans.com has continued tracking the Fastpass distribution pace at Radiator Springs Racers, and tells us that Fastpass tickets are still running out before 10:00 a.m. everyday, but not quite as quickly as during the first few weeks of operation. The ride was also closed the evening of July 12 and all of Friday, July 13 due to mechanical problems.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a week to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
