Half marathon weekend at Disneyland

The 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend takes place over Labor Day weekend, with the Health and Fitness Expo starting on Friday, August 30. Here's what the official weekend schedule looks like with the addition of the new 10K event on Saturday:

advertisement

Friday

  • 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Disneyland Health & Fitness Expo (Disneyland Hotel)

Saturday

  • 5:15 a.m. – Disneyland Family Fun Run 5K (Disneyland Resort)
  • 6:15 a.m. – Disneyland 10K (Disneyland Resort)
  • 10:00 a.m. – runDisney Kids Races (Downtown Disney)
  • 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Disneyland Health & Fitness Expo (Disneyland Hotel)
  • 6:00 p.m. – Pasta in the Park Party (Disneyland; tickets required)

Sunday

  • 5:30 a.m. – Disneyland Half Marathon (Disneyland Resort and the City of Anaheim)

The race impacts traffic on Interstate 5 through the Anaheim area, closing the Katella Avenue exit from northbound I-5, the Disney Way exit from southbound I-5, and both Harbor Boulevard exits from the I-5 between 5:30 and 8:00 a.m. on race day. The course travels from the Disneyland Resort to the Honda Center, then to Anaheim Stadium and back, so expect road closures on sections of major roads including Ball Road, Harbor Boulevard, and Katella Avenue. You can view the race course on pages 22–23 of the Disneyland Half Marathon guidebook.

Disney does not allow spectators to view the race course from inside either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure unless they have already purchased a gold or platinum ChEAR Squad package. The gold package is sold out, but you can still purchase the Platinum package at the Expo. If you want to come cheer on the runners without purchasing a spectator package, Disney recommends three viewing areas on property:

  • Start line (Disneyland Drive to Katella Avenue) – 5:30 to 6:35
  • Esplanade between Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure – 5:40 to 7:05
  • Final 3/4 mile (road from Paradise Pier Hotel to Disneyland Hotel and behind ESPN Zone) – 6:15 to 10:00

All of these viewing areas are accessible only by foot; so walk from either the Mickey and Friends parking structure, or from your hotel if staying nearby.

You can also go to Anaheim Stadium and cheer on the runners as they round the bases. The stadium is open from 6:05 to 9:05 for spectators; enter via the Orangewood Avenue entrance.

Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Due to the 5K and 10K races, there is no Magic Morning at Disney California Adventure on August 31.

On the day of the half-marathon itself, Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure open at 9:00 a.m. Due to the half-marathon, there is no Magic Morning at Disneyland on September 1.

Golden Horseshoe Play–Test Experience

by Teresa Whitmore

Mustachioed Montgomery mans the new stall, assisting guests to disguise themselves to blend in with the townsfolk. Disguise pieces cost $2 to $10. Photo by Teresa Whitmore.

For the past week, the Golden Horseshoe at Disneyland has been play-testing a new interactive guest experience. It involves in-depth interaction with various characters, low-cost souvenir “disguises” to help blend in with the show, a secret dining menu with all-new deliciously themed items, and the chance for children and adults to take on the roles as lawmen or outlaws to earn wooden nickels and “gold” nuggets, which can be traded in for property deeds to various parts of Frontierland.

Duke's Special (aka "Duke's Lunch") from the secret menu is spicy take on Disneyland's famous corn dogs, and is a battered and fried Polish hotlink topped with nacho cheese sauce, jalapeno, onion, and bacon bits. Served with a side of fries. Photo by Teresa Whitmore.

The experience is very immersible and time-consuming, but overall, a fun way to spend an hour or two. Guests also have the option of just sitting down and watching the action unfold around them while they enjoy the current menu items or new secret menu items (available by request).

Unleash the Villains Event and Haunted Mansion Holiday's 13th anniversary

Disney is hosting a bicoastal "Unleash the Villains" event on Friday the 13th of September to officially kick off the HalloweenTime promotions at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World. Disneyland remains open until 1 a.m. (the "13th hour") to celebrate. Here are the details released by Disney last week regarding the west coast celebration:

On this spooktacular evening, villains will take over Disneyland as well. Town Square is transformed for the party, where guests may see villains like Captain Hook, the Queen of Hearts, Judge Frollo, and Lady Tremaine. Cobwebs and vines, Halloween-themed projections, lighting effects, and an eerie fog set the tone for the evening. Witches and warlocks will get the dance party started, spinning a mix of upbeat Halloween tunes and Disney-friendly Top 40 hits.

Later in the evening, the twisted celebration spills over to New Orleans Square Train Station with lurking Disney villains ready for the Unleash the Villains Dance Party featuring a lit-up dance floor and raised platforms, spooky decor, and lighting effects. A mischievous station master DJ conducts this party announcing the arrival of a different ghoulish Disney villain at the 13th minute after every hour. Villains will be on the prowl after dusk for photo ops and character greetings, plus a few special surprises.

Haunted Mansion Holiday commemorates its 13th anniversary in 2013, and some interesting news about changes planned for the overlay this year was inexplicably buried inside an online magazine created for Disney Visa debit card holders. In an interview with the magazine, Brian Sandahl, Senior Designer, Show Development and Productions, gave hints about changes coming to the attraction this year, including:

  • New animation effect in the Stretching Portrait Gallery. "Think stained glass windows shattering and a peek-a-BOO appearance by that master of scaremonies, Jack Skellington."
  • A "fly-by" from Zero at an unspecified location inside the Haunted Mansion.
  • A special 13th anniversary gingerbread house.
  • "Groups of 13 holiday surprises from skulls and snappy plants to slinky ribbons in every room."

One MousePlanet reader noted that the Unleash the Villains event poses a scheduling conflict for Jewish Disney fans, saying "I understand the need to do something on Friday the 13th—but did no one care it is also the holiest day on the Jewish calendar (Yom Kippur)? I mean, people will make their choice, but I think it is a pretty crummy thing to do."

Another updated Fall 2013 Refurbishment schedule

Right after we published last week's Update, Disney released yet another new version of the fall refubishment schedule. There's still no official word about the rumored Radiator Springs Racers refurbishment, nor an extention of the ongoing Big Thunder Mountain Railroad construction, but Disney did confirm that Captain EO will close from September 11 through November 20. Here are the changes since last Monday, but scroll down to the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section for the complete list.

Disneyland

  • Mad Tea Party – closed August 19–29 for refurbishment. (Extended one week)
  • Disney Pin Traders – closed August 19 through August 30 for refurbishment. (Originally listed as September 30)
  • Snow White's Grotto – closed September 9–27 for refurbishment. (The wishing well area next to the Castle, not the ride)
  • Captain EO – closed September 11 through November 20.
  • Mad Tea Party – closed October 14–24 for refurbishment. (Extended 4 days)
  • Casey Jr. Circus Train – closed October 14–24 due to the Storybook Land refurbishment. (Extended 4 days)
  • Storybook Land Canal Boats – closed October 14–24 for refurbishment. (Extended 4 days)
  • Big Thunder Ranch Petting Farm – closed November 1–7 to convert from Halloween to holiday overlay.
  • Space Mountain – closed November 4 to remove Halloween overlay.

Disney California Adventure

  • Muppet Vision 3D – "partially closed" September 9–12 for refurbishment. We're not sure how one "partially closes" a theater. This may just be a refurbishment of the lobby area, but prepare yourself for the whole attraction to be closed, and then you can be pleasantly surprised if the theater is open.
  • Disney Animation Building – partial closures September 30 through November 12 for maintenance. (Extended two weeks)
  • Flik's Flyers – closed October 27 through November 14 for refurbishment. (This is now missing from the public refurbishment schedule, but still appears on the cast member version, so we're not sure if it's been cancelled or rescheduled.)
As noted below, you can also call the Disneyland Resort to get recorded information about refurbishments. The phone number is (714) 781–7290; just follow the prompts for the park you want information about. However, at publication time, this recording was offering information for January 2013, so it's not that reliable.

Ariel's Grotto restores World of Color dinner

Last summer, Disney turned Ariel's Grotto into an all-character, all-the-time dining venue, with character breakfast, lunch, and dinners featuring the Disney Princesses. At the time, they discontinued the World of Color dining package entirely.

It seems the restaurant quietly started offering the World of Color dinner package again earlier this summer in conjunction with the character meal, but last week officially notified cast members that, starting September 8, they're sending the princesses back to Fantasyland after lunch and officially making dinner a character-free dining experience.

World of Color dinner packages will be offered from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. We've seen no indication that the menu will change from the current prix-fix, family-style offering, though of course we'll check again after the change takes place.

You can book the World of Color dinner packages 60 days in advance, which means those of you visiting in the next two months should probably call to make your reservations now before Disney officially announces this. Call 714-781-DINE to make your reservation.

Thor: The Dark World meet-and-greet coming to Disneyland this fall

It would be hard to write a press release with fewer details, but Disney has announced that there will be some sort of meet-and-greet with Thor somewhere inside Disneyland sometime this fall. From the wording of the very-brief annoucement, it looks like the new character opportunity is replacing Tony Starks Hall of Armor inside Innoventions. The Disney Parks Blog has promised more details next month.

Rocks for CHOC raises $2500

Thanks to the generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet raised $2,500.07 for CHOC Children's in our Rocks for CHOC auction. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these auctions will go directly to Children's Hospital Orange County.

We especially need to thank the artists who donated their time and talents to creating these amazing works of art: Shag (Josh Agle), Chip Foose, Dave Avanzino, Kevin Kidney, Jody Daily, Joe Yakovetic, Stacia Martin, Jeff Granito, and Katie Kelly.

We are so pleased and grateful for the response to this auction, and several of the artists involved have already begun to plan their designs for the 2014 auction. Thank you, and we hope to raise even more in 2014.

This and that...

...A free 15-minute tour of the Carthay Circle Restuarant is now offered every morning at Disney California Adventure. From the brief description posted on Facebook, "a Carthay Circle Restaurant host or hostess will explore the history of the theater and its connections to The Walt Disney Company." Meet in front of the Carthay Circle Restaurant at 10:30 a.m. to join in.

...The three Disneyland Resort Hotels are hosting one-hour pool parties each day through the end of September. Disney says the parties "are a chance for the whole family to get together to enjoy games, music and dancing." We haven't seen them in person, but they sound like the parties Walt Disney World has been hosting at their pools for quite some time. Here is the daily schedule from the Disney Parks Blog:

  • Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa: 2 p.m. near the Fountain Pool
  • Disneyland Hotel: 3:30 p.m. near the Monorail Pool
  • Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel: 5 p.m. near the Californian Streamin’ Slide

...The full list of Disneyland Resort merchandise events, including pin trading nights and artist signing events, is now available on the Disneyland website.

...The new Disneyland Official Album is now available online via Amazon.com for $18.99.

Question of the Week

Each week, we share a question posted by a member of our MousePad discussion forum, and see if any of our other readers have advice or useful suggestions on that topic.

This week, MousePad member Jim Dear and Darling has a question about the differences between the character meals at Goofy's Kitchen and the Plaza Inn.

I have always been a Goofy's Kitchen loyal, but my friend just got back and she told me that she preferred Minnie's breakfast at the Plaza Inn. She said the food was exactly the same (omelette bar, PBJ pizza, etc.) but that the characters were better. Can anybody confirm or deny that the menu is the same?

Have you recently dined at either location? Even better, have you recently been to both? Please share your comments on our MousePad discussion forum,. You can also post your own question to be included in a future Update.

  • Muppet Vision 3D – "partially closed" September 9–12 for refurbishment. We're not sure how one "partially closes" a theater. Fall

  • Halloween Time – September 13 to October 31.

Team MousePlanet is back for our 6th year, and we welcome new members - visit the CHOC website to join us! You can also visit our MousePad discussion forum for more information about the walk and our team.

Winter

  • Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12 through the first week of 2014.
  • World of Color Winter Dreams debut – Friday, November 15.
  • Candlelight Processional – December 7 and 8 [unconfirmed]

2014

  • Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. The half-marathon and kids races are sold out, but registration is still open for the 5K and 10K.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.
One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $92/$86

One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $137/$131

Two Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $175/$162

Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $210/$197

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells two-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 2-day Park Hoppers are $197 for adults ($185 for children); 2-day 1/park/day tickets are $168 for adults ($156 for children).

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them.

Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $225/$209

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $260/$244

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells three-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 3-day Park Hoppers are $245 for adults ($230 for children); 3-day 1/park/day tickets are $217 for adults ($202 for children).

Everyone Plays for the Kids' Price – This offer is available in different versions from different vendors:

  • The Expedia website lists the following special offer: Book your Disneyland Resort Park 3-Day Hopper Ticket by September 30, 2013 and redeem now – October 31, 2013 to receive an Adult ticket for the Child ticket price (price listed reflects savings).

Their listed price is $243.99 for an adult 3-day Park-Hopper Bonus ticket, one cent less than the child ticket. The regular price of that ticket is $260, so you save $16 if you book through Expedia. There do not appear to be any additional booking fees, and you receive your voucher immediately, so this seems to be a legit way to save a little on a 3-day Park Hopper ticket. You can read the fine print on our MousePad discussion forums.

  • Get Away Travel has a similar offer with different dates. Tickets must be purchased by August 10 for travel through December 31, 2013. You must purchase the tickets at least four days in advance. The Get Away Travel offer also includes a $10 ESPN gift card.

2012–2013 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($125) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets may be purchased through September 26, 2013, and are valid through September 28, 2013. Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse).

Tickets are blocked out through July 4. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2013-2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Disney has also clarified that the "Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission," which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Tickets are blocked out through December 19, 2013 through December 31, 2013; April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014.

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.

Other Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!
Discounts for everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Beach Towel for $13.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Disneyland Tote Bag for $17.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Sorcerer Mickey Watch for $18.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Discounts for Annual Passholders

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.

Discounts for Disney Visa Cardholders

Character Meet and Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5"x7" photograph per visit.

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores

Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café)

Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the "Welcome to Disneyland," "A Walk in Walt's Footsteps," and "Discover the Magic" guided tours.

Discounts for US Military

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
