Imagineer Tony Baxter honored at Disneyland

Tony Baxter, Imagineer and Disney Legend—known for such rides as Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and the Indiana Jones Adventure—was honored at Disneyland last week with a personalized tribute window on Disneyland's Main Street, USA.

During the brief Main Street ceremony held on Friday, November 1, Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier, Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs, and Walt Disney Imagineering Chief Creative Executive Bruce Vaughn spoke of Baxter's contributions to Disney and his role in mentoring future generation of Imagineers.

Mickey Mouse arrived to help unveil the new window, then Baxter spoke about his early days at Disney, and how he had come to know and work with many of the people honored on other tribute windows along Main Street.

Asked after the ceremony what advice he would give to aspiring Imagineers, Baxter said they should find something they loved to do, learn additional skills to help them stand out from their coworkers, and develop a relationship with a mentor.

Holiday time preview

The period immediately after Halloween reminds me somewhat of an Advent calendar, with a new treat revealed everyday as Disney makes the transition between Halloween Time and the start of the winter holiday season. While Holiday Time doesn't officially begin until November 12, holiday decorations are already hanging throughout the Disneyland Resort, and the Christmas tree is already in place at Disney California Adventure.

Opening this Friday, November 8, is "it's a small world" Holiday, along with the Big Thunder Ranch and its holiday overlay. Disney has released a few teasers about what they have planned for the season, starting with a new clock show for "it's a small world." The new show debuts Tuesday, November 12, and will perform every 15 minutes after dark daily.

Pixar also released a preview of new Toy Story Nutcracker animation created for World of Color – Winter Dreams. The new show debuts Friday, November 15 at Disney California Adventure.

Disney California Adventure is hosting "Disney Viva Navidad!" November 15 through January 6. This "celebration inspired by the warmth and joyous spirit of the Latino culture" features a new Disney Viva Navidad! Street Party in Paradise Garden with Mickey, Minnie, and the Three Caballeros, mariachi and folklorico performances at the Paradise Garden bandstand, and special menu offerings at the Paradise Garden restaurants.

...Grumpy Cat, the "Ridiculously Photogenic Guy" and other social media personalities will be at Disneyland tomorrow, Tuesday, November 5, for the Social Media All-Stars Disney Side event. This event is the official kick-off of Disney's national "Show Your Disney Side" marketing campaign, and will feature the premiere of video and photo content by the "all-stars" showing their Disney sides. The event is closed to the public, but each personality hosted contests over the past few weeks to award tickets to their fans. You'll be able to see the videos on YouTube, Vine, and Instagram following the event.

...A refurbishment reminder for this week: Radiator Springs Racers is closed November 4–7 for refurbishment, Space Mountain is closed November 4 to remove Halloween overlay, and "it's a small world" is closed until Friday to install the holiday overlay.

...Disneyland chef Oscar Martinez was featured in an Associated Press story about workplace satisfaction among older workers. The 77-year-old Martinez has worked at the park since he was 20, and in 2011, was honored as Disneyland's longest-tenured employee.

The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. Question of the Week

Each week, we share a question posted by a member of our MousePad discussion forum, and see if any of our other readers have advice or useful suggestions on that topic.

This week, MousePad member Pr1ncess365, has a question about her Christmas trip:

What off-site hotel do you recommend around holiday time? I'm looking for the best holiday decorated hotel in the area around Disneyland. We usually drive back home, but I think this would be a great treat for the family.

Do you have a favorite local hotel which is especially charming during the holidays? If so, please share your suggestions on our MousePad discussion forum. You can also post your own question to be included in a future Update.

Resort Events

Check here to see if a large convention, competition or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2013

Winter

  • Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 9–10 (unconfirmed). Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 9, with November 10 scheduled as a back up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
  • Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12 through January 6, 2014.
  • World of Color Winter Dreams debut – Friday, November 15.
  • Candlelight Processional – December 7 and 8. Showtimes are 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. both nights.

2014

  • Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. All races are now sold out, but registration is still open for the Pasta in the Park party. Volunteer registration has not yet opened.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $92/$86

One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $137/$131
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.
Two Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $175/$162

Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $210/$197

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells two-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 2-day Park Hoppers are $197 for adults ($185 for children); 2-day 1/park/day tickets are $168 for adults ($156 for children).

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them.

Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $225/$209

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $260/$244

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells three-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 3-day Park Hoppers are $245 for adults ($230 for children); 3-day 1/park/day tickets are $217 for adults ($202 for children).

Everyone Plays for the Kids' Price – this offer is available in different versions from different vendors:

  • The Expedia website lists the following special offer: Book your Disneyland Resort Park 3-Day Hopper Ticket by September 30, 2013 and redeem now through October 31, 2013 to receive an Adult ticket for the Child ticket price (price listed reflects savings).

Their listed price is $243.99 for an adult 3-day Park-Hopper Bonus ticket, one cent less than the child ticket. The regular price of that ticket is $260, so you save $16 if you book through Expedia. There do not appear to be any additional booking fees, and you receive your voucher immediately, so this seems to be a legit way to save a little on a 3-day Park Hopper ticket. You can read the fine print on our MousePad discussion forums.

  • Get Away Travel has a similar offer with different dates. Tickets must be purchased by August 10 for travel through December 31, 2013. You must purchase the tickets at least four days in advance. The Get Away Travel offer also includes a $10 ESPN gift card.

2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2013-2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the "Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission," which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Tickets are blocked out through December 19, 2013 through December 31, 2013; April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them.

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them.

Five Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $265/$244

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
