DCA celebrates Lunar New Year

Disney California Adventure is commemorating Lunar New Year with a three-day celebration this weekend, January 31 to February 2. Paradise Gardens is the headquarters for this traditional Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese New Year celebration, which marks the Year of the Horse.

Several times a day, Mulan and Mushu will lead Mulan's Chinese New Year Procession along the parade route in front of Paradise Gardens, accompanied by umbrella dancers. Mulan and Mushu will be on hand for a meet-and-greet after each procession. You can also meet Mickey and Minnie at the photo location inside the Paradise Gardens gazebo.

The Paradise Gardens stage will feature community performing groups, including Chinese dragon dancers and Korean drummers.

The food offerings seem pared down from the 2013 New Year celebration, but Bayside Brews is offering steamed pork bao, ginger milk tea, almond cookies, and Tsingtao beer. A food cart in Paradise Gardens will also offer the pork bao and almond cookies.

Disney's merchandise department joins the celebration with a Happy Lunar New Year T-shirt, and red envelopes with the event logo.

The race to register for the Dumbo Double Dare

After general registration for the inaugural Dumbo Double Dare sold out in under an hour last year, runners interested in completing the back-to-back 10K and half-marathon challenge over Labor Day weekend later this year wasted no time last week when early registration opened for Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club members. The early registration spots for the Dumbo Double Dare allocated to those two groups sold out in a matter of hours, but Disney announced that annual passholders will have another change to register before the general public tomorrow (Tuesday) morning:

"Beginning at 8:00 am PST on January 28, there will be a limited quantity of registrations available for the Dumbo Double Dare, Disneyland Half Marathon, Disneyland 10K, and the Disneyland Family Fun Run 5K (registration for the general audience opens at 9:00 am PST). Thank you for your passion around the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend and all of our Run Disney races. Keep running!"

We've heard rumors that runDisney has decreased the size of the Dumbo Double Dare field this year, and that seems to be supported by a report from MousePlanet member Melissa Mayorgas, president of Team Muscle Makers for UCMD, a charity team that raises money for Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy and which actively participates in runDisney races for their fundraising. She said:

"For the first time ever, I didn't get the amount of charity spots that I requested for the event. I had to wait list two of my 10K runners. [Our Dumbo Double Dare], 10K and 5K teams are already full. My runDisney rep warned me that many charity and travel groups wouldn't get what they requested since so many over-order."

While early registration spots for the Dumbo Double Dare are full, you can still register for the half-marathon, 10K, and runDisney kids races right now if you are a Disneyland or Walt Disney World Annual Passholder, or a member of the Disney Vacation Club. Use the links below to register before open registration for the 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend events starts at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific) Tuesday January 28, 2014. It appears Disney Visa cardholders will not have an early registration offer for this event.

Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders:

Disney Vacation Club (use member code DVCRUNDISNEY and receive $10 off your race registration):

Note: The Dumbo Double Dare slots allocated to DVC members and Annual Passholders during the early registration period have sold out. You cannot earn the Double Dare medal by registering for the two events separately. If you wish to earn the Double Dare medal, register through the open registration period starting Tuesday morning.

Team MousePlanet columnist Lorree Tachell shared that Legacy runners (those who have completed all of the Disneyland Half Marathon events since 2005), were offered a reserved registration spot this year in the event they couldn't get through the registration process before the race sells out Tuesday. Lorree writes,

"We've talked about the need for this for years given the fast sell-out and the fact that many of us can't guarantee we'll be able to be online at 9:00 a.m. PST when registration opens. I heard that many Legacy runners lost their status last year when they missed the fast open and close of the 2013 race. This is just absolutely wonderful."

While the pricing list for all the events includes the various price increases based on when you register, we suspect that these events will sell out too quickly for the higher price tiers to kick in (our contributing writer Lorree Tachell has also provided the price increases for the 2014 race):

This is a change from last year, when both the 5K and 10K races were held on Saturday morning. This should make it easier for those who are interested in participating in both 5K and 10K events.

After you register for your event, come add your name to the Team MousePlanet race roster to connect with other runners and share training tips.

Big Thunder Mountain update and more refurbishment news

Much of the reader mail we receive has to do with the refurbishment schedule posted in the weekly Update, especially when the schedule we provide doesn't match the official schedule published by Disneyland. In preparing our schedule, we rely on a number of Disney sources, including the published refurbishment calendar, the refurbishment hotline, and information provided by cast members sources. Finding matching information from any two of those sources is a pleasant surprise; having them all agree is a miracle akin to winning an overnight stay in the Dream Suite.

Adding to the complication is the "subject to change without notice" nature of refurbishments, where dates slip and slide all the time, and a delay in one project can impact the dates of others. All that said, this is an area we monitor weekly because we know how much our readers rely on the information, and we try to present what we think is the most accurate schedule possible.

There have been a few tweaks this week, including the extension of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment. Once Disney announced the ride would open in "early 2014" instead of October 30, 2013 as originally planned, the company has prudently avoided releasing a firm reopening date. Various public and internal calendars have given a series of reopening dates between the end of January and the middle of February, but last week, Disney extended the refurbishment on the official calendar at least through March 9, 2014. Rumors about the cause of the delay abound, but we know that testing continues, with trains running around the track on most days.

The Big Thunder extension may have impacted the planned Alice in Wonderland refurbishment. That ride was to have closed February 3 through June 5, but is still listed as open at least through March 9. The Indiana Jones and Space Mountain closures we reported earlier this month now appear on the official refurbishment calendar. Finally, it appears that the refurbishment of the Sailing Ship Columbia was mistakenly listed as a Pirates of the Caribbean refurbishment on one official Disney publication, so we've removed that from the list below.

Of course, all of this is still subject to change as soon as Disneyland announces its future plans for Tomorrowland and elsewhere.

Disneyland

  • Fantasmic – dark through February 13.
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed until "early 2014" for a major refurbishment. Disneyland.com shows it closed at least through March 9. The ride was to have reopened October 30, 2013.
  • Sailing Ship Columbia – closed through February 13 for refurbishment.
  • Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage – closed for refurbishment. A reopening date of September 26 is listed on a cast member document, but this date is likely just a placeholder.
  • "it's a small world" – closed through February 7 to remove the holiday overlay.
  • Splash Mountain – closed through February 28 for refurbishment.
  • Tiki Juice Bar – closed through February 6 for refurbishment.
  • Disneyland Railroad – closed February 4 for refurbishment.
  • Mark Twain Riverboat – closed February 24–28 for refurbishment.
  • Disneyland Railroad – closed February 24 through March 7 for refurbishment.
  • Indiana Jones Adventure – closed March 3 through April 25 for refurbishment.

This and that...

...With the Viva Navidad celebration over, Paradise Garden Grill has returned to its Mediterranean-inspired menu. The menu board now displays large photos of each entree to help customers who might not be familiar with the foods available.

A new Garden Fare section includes the existing Greek Salad along with a new beef gyro platter. The kids menu has also been simplified, with a peanut butter and jelly pita and a turkey/beef slider replacing the previous offering of a grilled chicken skewer or beef kabob served with rice and seasonal fruit.

I also noted some subtle "tourist-friendly" changes in the menu descriptions—the Kefta skewer is now sold as a "meatball," the tandoori-spiced yogurt dip is off the menu, and the Moroccan Chili dip is now just "chili." Still, this is one of my favorite locations on property, and I'm happy to see that the food returned unchanged.

...A portion of Tomorrowland that includes Redd Rockett's Pizza Port, Space Mountain, and Star Tours, was closed Saturday evening due to what a cast member told us was a "suspicious item" reported in the area. Cast members cleared guests from the area while Disneyland's security department and K9 team responded. The area was reopened after about an hour.

...Readers have been discussing the current Purchase with Purchase offers on our MousePad forum. These are the reduced-price souvenirs (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) offered with a qualifying minimum purchase at participating Disney-operated stores. The current offers include:

  • Disneyland Mickey Mouse Tote for $16.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Character Lock Pin for $2.95 with a purchase of $30 or more.
  • Disneyland Throw for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy all three of the items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.

...MousePad Community Leader Toocherie caught up with Disneyland's recently retired Billy Hill and the Hillbillies at Knott's Berry Farm, where the group appears as "Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies" in the Wilderness Dance Hall, and posted this trip report. If you'd like to know how the former Disneyland performers are doing in their new home, it's worth a read.

Question of the Week

Reader tigger12658 is looking for advice or reviews on the Best Western Raffles hotel in Anaheim for her upcoming honeymoon trip to Disneyland:

"Has anyone stayed here? We are going [May] 16th to the 23rd and found a great rate at Best Western Raffels of $76 a night. We usually stay at [Howard Johnson] but we haven't been to Disneyland since 2007 and I was surprised at how much their rates went up.

What is the walking distance for [Best Western] to [Disneyland] compared to Hojo? I have seen the Toy Story parking garage is near by and you can hop on a shuttle. How much closer is it compared to walking? We view hotels as a place to put your head at night, it doesn't have to be a Ritz but definitely don't want a roach motel. Is the breakfast good or just the usual cereal and donuts?"

Resort Events

Check here to see if a large convention, competition or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

  • Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 29–31 (Labor Day weekend). Registration opens Tuesday January 28.
  • MouseAdventure Card Games – Deuces Wild – Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Disneyland Resort. Additional details will be available shortly; be sure to register for the MouseAdventure Newsletter to get the latest information as it is released.
  • Disneyana Fan Club Collectible EXPO 2014 – Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Resort Anaheim. General admission hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information and a $1 off coupon are available at the event website.

2015

  • Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Mother's Day (May 10) weekend. No additional details available.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $92/$86

One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $137/$131

You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $129 for ages 3 and up, a $30 jump from the 2012 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $35, a savings of up to $46 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket.

2-Day So Cal Resident Park Hopper Ticket ($164) – offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to Disneyland and/or Disney California Adventure on two separate days on or before June 6, 2014.

You can use each day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the next day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. When purchased in advance, this ticket comes with one Magic Morning entry; tickets sold at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths do not include this benefit.

2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the "Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission," which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Tickets are blocked out April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them.

Discounts for everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Current offers:

  • Disneyland Mickey Mouse Tote for $16.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Character Lock Pin for $2.95 with a purchase of $30 or more.
  • Disneyland Throw for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Discounts for US Military

Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
