Celebrating Haunted Mansion's 45th anniversary

Disneyland's Haunted Mansion marked its 45th anniversary this week, and the celebrations in Southern California provided an interesting glimpse into the different ways the Walt Disney Company and the Disney fan community approach such milestones.

Disney is cashing in on the 45th anniversary with a massive assortment of apparel, home accessories, collectibles, and souvenirs aimed at the Haunted Mansion fan with cash to spare. Merchandise manager Steven Miller released another preview of the merchandise from the "Haunted Mansion Authentic" collection last week. Paraphrasing Little Leota, Miller ends the video calling, "Hurry back, hurry back. Be sure to bring your wallet if you should decide to join us."

Disneyland's foods department is involved in the anniversary promotion, with a new popcorn bucket, travel mug, and set of collectible posters released this past weekend. And next Saturday, August 16, the Disney Gallery hosts a Haunted Mansion 45th anniversary product release and signing event that features work for more than a dozen artists. I personally consider these to be some of the best merchandise collections I've ever seen Disney put together, and they continues the recent explosion of well-designed attraction- and land-specific merchandise. I have no quibble with the merchandise itself, though I fear Disney may be overagressive in releasing more than 100 products—some of which are very high-end—in the current economic climate.

But lost in the celebration of the anniverary at Disneyland was any official tie-in to the ride itself. While Disneyland recently marked the 25th anniversary of Splash Mountain with a poster giveaway for annual passholders, and the 50th anniversary of "it's a small world" with a global celebration and singalong led by Richard Sherman, the Haunted Mansion anniversary didn't even prompt Disneyland managers to put an extra candle on the birthday cake in the attraction's ballroom scene.

Perhaps this shouldn't be a surprise for a mid-decade anniversary, but the Haunted Mansion isn't just any ride. So while Disneyland marked Saturday's anniversary by selling limited edition T-shirts and pins, and treating winners of a KTLA contest to an overnight stay in the attraction, Disney fans took the celebration off-site, hosting two Haunted Mansion events at the ScareLA trade show and convention for the haunted attractions industry. Doombuggies.com coordinated a Haunted Mansion panel discussion with Disney Legends Bob Gurr and Alice Davis.

The convention also featured four performances of "Chilling Tales of the Haunted Mansion," a live dramatic reading of 'The Story and Song from The Haunted Mansion" storybook and record released in 1969. At midnight, hundreds of Haunted Mansion fans gathered back at Disneyland for a birthday ride on the Haunted Mansion.

When it comes to anniversary celebrations, Disney clearly has the upper hand in things like access to intellectual property, Imagineers, and venues. But when Disney cannot or will not commemorate an event that fans find important, it's clear that the fan community has no problem making its own celebration. While some in Disney management consider "fan" to be a four-letter word, fans who love a product enough to hold their own anniversary parties are the types of fan Disney should value for more than just their wallets.

Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend update

General registration for Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend races opens this Tuesday, August 12 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) at runDisney.com. Race events take place the weekend of May 7–10, and include the 13.1-mile Tinker Bell Half Marathon, 6.2-mile Tinker Bell 10K, 3.1-mile Never Land 5K, runDisney kids races, and the new Pixie Dust Challenge we wrote about last week.

Challenge events have proven very popular with runDisney participants, who seem perfectly willing to pay a little extra versus the a la carte registration prices to receive an additional event shirt and a special challenge medal. As expected, the spots allocated for annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members sold out in mere minutes when early registration opened last week.

If you weren't eligible for early registration, or didn't get a spot, don't despair. Early registration is restricted to a small percentage of overall spots, and there will be more availability when general registration opens Tuesday. However, we strongly recommend that you skip the runDisney website on registration morning and register directly through Active.com. The runDisney site often crashes on registration days, where the Active.com website is still running. We also recommend creating a login at Active.com so you can quickly log in and start the actual registration process.

runDisney usually posts tiered event pricing, which leads to the (usually false) impression that registration is still be available two or more months after registration opens. Given that recent events have sold out in minutes and hours rather than weeks and months, we are only listing the first-tier price for each running event:

  • Tinker Bell Half Marathon – $195
  • Tinker Bell 10K – $105
  • Pixie Dust Challenge – $320
  • Never Land 5K – $70
  • runDisney Kids Races – $20

Full details about the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend are available at the runDisney website:

runDisney also released a preview of the medals for the inaugural events for Avengers Half Marathon Weekend (November 14–16, 2014). The races are sold out through runDisney, but registration is available through participating charity teams and travel agencies—check the runDisney website for a list.

Kermit and Miss Piggy to appear at Muppets Most Wanted passholder event

Premier, Premium, and Deluxe Disneyland Resort annual passholders can attend a free screening of Muppets Most Wanted this Tuesday, August 12, at Disney California Adventure park. Showings are scheduled at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 8:00 p.m. in the Muppet*Vision Theater.

Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. in front of the Muppet*Vision Theater in Disney California Adventure. All passholders must be present in person to reserve a space for themselves; you cannot reserve a spot for a friend or family member who is not present. When you arrive, you can select the showtime you want, while space is available. Passholders will also receive a free popcorn and drink at the movie.

Disney announced Sunday that Kermit and Miss Piggy are appearing at the event, but we don't know if this is an in-person appearance or a tag added to the front of the movie, as was the case when Disney screened an extended trailer of the film during the annual passholder event in March.

This is a blockout date for SoCal and SoCal Select passholders, but Deluxe and Premium/Premier passholders can attend.

...Four Disneyland restaurants launched a purchase-with-purchase offer tied to the Haunted Mansion's 45th anniversary this past Saturday. The promotion offers customers a chance to purchase one of four Haunted Mansion stretching room "Print on Canvas" posters for $5 with a purchase of $30 or more at that restaurant. Each of the four locations has a different poster:

  • Rancho del Zocalo – Minnie Mouse
  • Plaza Inn – Daisy
  • Mickey, Donald and Goofy – Riverbelle Terrace
  • Goofy – French Market

Four Haunted Mansion posters are available at participating Disneyland restaurants. Photo © Disney.

The promotion is scheduled to run through October 31, but Disney cautions that supplies are "super limited." Several cast members have confirmed that there are 5,000 of each print available. MousePlanet reader Oleg says the portraits are printed on a nylon-like material rather than a true canvas, and measure 28.5" x 11".

...If you are attending the Taste of Downtown Disney event this Thursday night, MousePlanet reader currence has some great news regarding parking: The tickets state, "Taste guests will valet their car on the Convention Hall Front Drive of Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, enter the Convention Hall where we have a beautiful desk set up to check you in for the event. We will then we'll [sic] lead you straight out into Downtown Disney for the rest of your experience." Note that these details are not available at the CHOC website.

currence notes that the tickets read "Cocktail attire please." Based on past years, and considering the timing, format, setting, and season of the event, business attire is also appropriate. A very limited number of tickets are still available from the event website.

...The Disneyland All-American College Band performed their final Saturday night set of the 2014 season this weekend, drawing a large crowd of music fans to Main Street, U.S.A. The band is a staple of the summer season at the Disneyland resort.

...Hiro and Baymax, stars of the upcoming Disney animated film Big Hero 6, appear in a meet-and-greet at Disneyland sometime this fall, according to the Disney Parks Blog. No additional details were released. The movie debuts in U.S. theaters on November 6, 2014.

...Disneyland park closes at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, for the Disney Legacy recognition ceremony for cast members. Both parks open at 9:00 a.m. that morning, and Disney California Adventure remains open until 9:00 p.m.

...The Adventure Trading Company experience may end sooner than planned at Disneyland, according to cast members working at some of the stations. The promotion has proven extremely popular, and the quests are selling faster than expected. While the adventure continues, be sure to bring your earned Juju with you whenever you visit Disneyland, and keep an eye on the park's official @DisneylandToday Twitter feed. Several times this past week, the park has invited people who have specific Juju charms to meet at a certain place and time to participate in a free adventure, and earn an elusive 10th Juju, the skull figure released at last year's D23 Expo.

...Tickets are still available for all dates of Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland. None of the event dates have yet sold out. Purchase tickets online and at Disneyland Resort ticket booths.

…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

Question of the Week

Reader Nicki M wants to know about character dining at Ariel's Grotto

Hey parents with two year olds! We are planning on a character dinner at Ariel's Grotto, when is the best time of day to go? I've never been to AG, so I don't know if there's a better time to go when it's less crowded for a little one, or is it always busy? Were going mid September, TouringPlans says it'll be a one on the crowd scale every day we are there, so I'm not super worried about that. Thanks a ton!

Do you have advice regarding better times to go, or times to avoid? Come share your experience on our MousePad forum.

Do you have questions about an upcoming Disneyland visit, or need help choosing a hotel, restaurant or activity? Post your questions on our Disneyland Resort Trip Planning forum to get advice from our readers and Community Leaders. Your question may even be featured here in an upcoming Update.

  • Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015. (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. General registration opens Tuesday, August 12. Details at the runDisney website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of May 2014.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Other Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

Discounts for everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Mickey Mouse Backpack for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.
  • Disneyland Mickey Mouse Watch for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.

Landry's Select Club–members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Discounts for Annual Passholders

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014.

30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii –Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry.

Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people.

The offer is valid most nights August 25 through November 25, and November 30 through December 19. Contact your travel agent, visit the Disneyland annual passholder website, or call (714) 520-7001.

Discounts for Disney Visa Cardholders

Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5"x7" photograph per visit.

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores.

Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café).

Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the "Welcome to Disneyland," "A Walk in Walt's Footsteps," and "Discover the Magic" guided tours.

See the Disney Visa website for terms and conditions for all of these promotions.

Hotel and travel package offers

Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.

Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at three DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!); preferred showing of Turtle Talk With Crush (priority viewing at the first Turtle Talk With Crush show of the day, on any one day—one voucher per guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a "Character Call" from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Contact Disney Travel or your favorite travel agent.

Discounts for US Military

2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the "Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission," which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
