All-American Celebration – Disneyland celebrated the Fourth of July in the style that has made spending the holiday at the park an annual tradition for some families. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces were honored with a character-filled United Service Organizations (USO) parade down Main Street, U.S.A. in the morning as part of a bicoastal celebration with Walt Disney World.

The All-American College Band performed before the afternoon Flag Retreat ceremony, which drew larger-than-usual crowds to Town Square.

Overall, it seemed that the Disneyland Resort had smaller daytime crowds than in past years. Visitors to Disney's California Adventure park enjoyed 30-minute waits for Soarin' Over California, and short five-minute waits for California Screamin'.

Attendance rose as darkness fell, with thousands of additional visitors packing into Disneyland for the fireworks. Hundreds more poured into Downtown Disney and took seats in the esplanade between the parks. The streets around the resort became filled with spectators, some setting up chairs on sidewalks and even on the I-5 freeway overpass to catch the show. After the regular performance of Believe, Disney wowed the crowds with an additional 8-minute display, set to patriotic themes and military anthems.

“Fifty-thousand people moving in circles,” quipped one visitor trapped in the post-fireworks traffic jam around the Castle. Presumably to keep more visitors from heading to the already-full Fantasmic show, guest control cast members blocked the entrances to both Adventureland and Frontierland once the fireworks ended. With walkways around the castle still closed for the routine fire inspection after the show, the only way to get from Main Street to the west side was through the Plaza Gardens and down the narrow pathway past the closed Rancho del Zocalo.

Closing the two major cross-park routes guarantee gridlock, but worse, the cast members themselves were issuing conflicting directions. Visitors were herded from the Adventureland gate to the Frontierland gate, only to learn that that entrance was closed as well.

Now, we're not complaining that the park was packed wall-to-wall after the fireworks on the Fourth of July. Anyone who heads to Disneyland on that night and who doesn't expect a crowd truly belongs in Fantasyland. But at the same time, the park has had nearly 48 years to figure out how to handle those crowds. And—as they recently demonstrated during the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl movie premiere event—they can do a good job of it when they try.

Invited guests get to watch the premiere screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on a specially constructed screen in front of the Rivers of America in New Orleans Square. Photo by Ryan Hedge.

What the stars saw – MousePlanet reader Ryan Hedge was fortunate enough to wrangle an invitation to the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl movie premiere, and sent us photos from the bleachers. He wrote:

“Overall, the event was incredible. Entertainers and celebs everywhere. Great D'land staff handling it all. The rides were empty, which made me happy. Seeing Critter Country completely vacant, yet still functioning, was just odd. And there were fireworks after, which was oodles of fun because I haven't seen fireworks at Disneyland since I was a kid. As much as it ruins some aspects of the park's daily runnings, I think it was worth it. At least for those of us who were fortunate enough to go.”

“They also gave out hats, blankets, posters, tattoos, swords, piggy banks, pictures, and Microsoft Xbox games. And of course, the movie was incredibly good.”

You can see more of Ryan's photos—and read his review of the movie—at Electronic Mayhem (link).

Ton Sawyer Island reopens with far less bubble wrap than expected. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Tom Sawyer Island returns – Summer visitors got a treat last week, as Tom Sawyer Island fully reopened with a new play area. Far from the bubble-wrapped, foam-padded environment some were fearing, the new multi-level playground is a worthy addition to the “natural environment” on the island.

Bursting crates and barrels support the play area. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Peer through this telescope and see the moose across the river. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The new play area is built somewhat like an open treehouse, with stairs, walkways, bridges, lookout stations and more. A collection of fixed telescopes rim the upper level, and signs provide hints about the scenery to be discovered. The detail is quite impressive, with “bursting” barrels and crates holding up the “floor,” and a haphazard assortment of salvaged wood creating the rails.

An assortment of scrap lumber forms the rail around the play area. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The newly reopened entrances to the caves are now a tight fit for some. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The caves have reopened, with some major changes. We expected the cave entrances to be widened, the roofs raised, and the walls covered with foam padding. Instead, the cave entrances have actually been narrowed quite a lot, and parents may not want—or be able—to follow their children into the tighter spaces. Some of the caves have new light fixtures, which cast a warm golden glow into the darker corners.

To the great delight of many, both the suspension and barrel bridges are again open to the public. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Tom and Becky's fence has been relocated to the island. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

While the Rivers of America were drained this winter, a brown wooden fence blocked the view of the empty river. Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher spent their afternoons persuading unsuspecting park visitors to help them paint this fence.

Now a piece of that fence has been installed on the island, and Tom Sawyer can usually be found playing with groups of delighted children. Tom and his friend Huck Finn lead bands of children on grand adventures, exploring the caves and play area and leading “attacks” on the watercraft that circle the island. This is great fun, and a wonderful addition to an attraction that many had written off.

Fort Wilderness on Tom Sawyer Island remains closed after the rehab. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Disney's idea of an acceptable replacement of the fire effect on the cabin in Fort Wilderness may no longer pose any fire hazard, but it also looks more like fire alarm lights than anything resembling fire. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

As we followed Tom, he led a group of children past Fort Wilderness, and warned them to stay away because the Fort was “on fire.” Sadly, the fiery glow comes from an array of lights planted in plain view atop a roof inside the fort. Fort Wilderness is now used as a dressing and break area for the new island characters, and serves as a staging area for Fantasmic. Disney has done such a great job rehabilitating the rest of the island — we can only hope that they have not abandoned the Fort forever.

Maybe those Priority Seating reservations aren't necessary after all; vacant seats abound just minutes before the various X Games shows in Disney's California Adventure. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The X Games have landed – DCA's X Games Xperience opened last week, and visitors got a chance to see the park's latest promotion. Over the long holiday weekend, small crowds gathered in the Paradise Bay Amphitheater and new X Arena to see athletes jump, spin and flip on bikes, 'boards and 'blades. On the Fourth of July, it was possible to get good—even front-row—seats just five minutes before each show.

The entrance to the X Arena is located next to the Mission Tortilla Factory. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

After we wrote about the new event last Friday, reader TP2000 posted this note on our MousePad message boards:

“I am simply shocked at how ugly and trashy this XGames stuff all looks. From the giant corrugated metal 'X' plopped down in front of the sun icon (not like that was a work of art, but now it's even worse) to the hideously cheap looking 'Moto X Arena' out in the parking lot, all of this XGames stuff sets a brand new low for Disney parks in my book.

“The pictures in today's MousePlanet update don't do it justice, because all of these venues look about three times worse in person than they do in the few pics Adrienne posted with her update. You've just got to see it to believe how tacky and low-rent Disney has allowed its newest American park to get.”

Adrienne returned to DCA over the weekend, and took more shots of the X Games venues, especially the X Arena. We present the photos below, and let you draw your own conclusions.

As you enter the X Arena, backstage areas are visible to the left and right. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Children of the Corn – DCA's Mission Tortilla Factory has a new entrance that is designed to make sure that visitors watch the new pre-show video before they proceed to the factory floor. The video is of three children, presenting a class project report on the history of the tortilla.

This lovely new doorway to the Mission Tortilla Factory keeps visitors in the front room until the film is over. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

This new video, complete with an animated sun god who intones, “The-corn-is-good-you-may-go-now,” makes the Boudin Bakery film look like Oscar-worthy entertainment.

Don't miss the new film, El reporte de la tortilla – the Mission Tortilla Factory matures into a true attraction now that it includes a pre-show film. Can 3-D glasses be far behind?. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Pirates of the Disney Gallery - With Pirates of the Caribbean:The Curse of the Black Pearl, Disney's latest live-action film, due to hit theaters this week, the Disney Gallery has a new collection of props and costumes from the movie on display.

Looking way, way, way ahead – From the far-left-field department comes this completely unsubstantiated rumor about the Riverbelle Terrace. We hear that the restaurant will be closed in 2005, and rebuilt with a two-level seating area, similar to the one at the Hungry Bear.

The Riverbelle Terrace might become a premium viewing area for Fantasmic in 2006. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Both levels will be used for breakfast and lunch, with the upper terrace reserved at night to provide a larger premium viewing area for Fantasmic. The restaurant would reopen in 2006. If true, this rumor should offer some small token of hope to those who fear that the days of Fantasmic are numbered.

Four new outdoor vending locations have appeared at Disneyland. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

New digs at Disneyland – Four new permanent outdoor vending locations have opened at Disneyland. The stands on Main Street, Small World Mall and New Orleans Square serve frozen lemonade, coffee and hot chocolate. The new stands were doing brisk business all weekend; so much so that the New Orleans Square location sold out of frozen lemonade by midday on Friday.

The hunny pot calling the kettle corn black? It may sound odd, but hunny popcorn is actually pretty good. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The fourth location, located in Critter Country, sells “hunny” flavored caramel popcorn. This new creation is not overly sweet, and seems popular with park visitors — but take care not to lose a filling when you eat it. Cast members were glad to hand out a small sample of the popcorn on request, so you can be sure you like it before you buy a whole box. Boxes and buckets of the honey-flavored corn cost $1 more than the buttered version.

The Piece of Eight store gets a small expansion. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Larger Pieces of Eight – A new Pirates of the Caribbean merchandise location has sprung up in the courtyard between the Pieces of Eight and Le Bat en Rouge stores in New Orleans Square. The cart sells some of the new core merchandise created in support of the movie.

Disneyland looks to pin collectors to promote Fantasia ice cream. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

If you pin it, they will buy – Disneyland is trying to build brand recognition for the park-exclusive Fantasia ice cream flavor, and has launched a new promotion to lure customers to the ice cream counter to buy the banana-pistachio-cherry-flavored concoction. Customers who order selected ice cream sundaes at eight participating locations at the Disneyland Resort can receive one of four Fantasia pins free with their purchase.

The promotion began Sunday, but no signs were visible. Restaurant cast members were not certain how many pins had been made, nor how long the offer would last. Participating locations include Hook's Pointe in the Disneyland Hotel, Storytellers Cafe in the Grand Californian Hotel, PCH Grill in the Paradise Pier Hotel, Brr Bank Ice Cream in Disney's California Adventure park, and the following in Disneyland — Carnation Cafe, Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor, Rancho del Zocalo, and Main Street Cone Shop.

This peaceful stretch of river is usually broken by 15-foot-tall jets of water. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Looking for a splash in the Golden State – Riders on Grizzly River Run this weekend wondered what happened to the huge jets of water that used to spray rafts as they floated toward the loading dock at the end of the trip. Cast members say that the jets were shut off because of mechanical difficulties two months ago, and that the ride engineers are trying to correct the problem.

The movie premiere may be over, but construction continues on the balconies around New Orleans Square. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Fantasmic goes dark, again – After a lengthy winter rehab, and then a week-long hiatus for the Pirates movie premiere, Disneyland's popular Fantasmic show will close again on Tuesday, September 2. This time, the closure is due to a dry-dock rehab on the hull of the Mark Twain. Even though the Mark Twain returns to service on Friday, October 3, Fantasmic is not scheduled to return until the summer 2004.

Get $150 in Disney Dollars – The Walt Disney Travel Company is offering tourists $150 in Disney Dollars when they book a vacation package that includes a stay of 4 nights or longer at one of the Disneyland Resort Hotels. Get more details from Disney Travel, or on the Disneyland Web site (link).

New Play 4 Days pass Southern California residents, (zip codes 90000-93599), can purchase a new four-day ticket for just $79. The ticket is valid for four admissions to either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure park, between June 1 and September 30, 2003. Residents can purchase just one ticket per person, per day, so your out-of-town relatives will need to buy their own, regular-priced admission.

The tickets can only be used at one park each day — no park hopping. We understand that you can use two admissions — one to each park — on the same day, effectively making this a $79 two-day park-hopper ticket, a $20 discount from the regular adult price.

The tickets can not be used at Disneyland on June 28, and July 4, 5, 26, and August 2, 9, 16, 23, 29, 30, and 31. There are no block-out days for DCA. Tickets are nontransferable, and you must show a valid ID each time. These tickets can be applied towards the cost of a Deluxe or Premium Annual Passport, (but not a Southern California Annual Passport), so long as you upgrade when or before you use the fourth admission.

Disney's Armed Forces Salute – Through Friday, December 19, all active members of the United States military (including Coast Guard and activated National Guard and Reservists) qualify for Disney's Armed Forces Salute and can claim one free 3-day park-hopper tickets. Since the tickets expire on December 19, you must claim them by December 17 to use all three day's worth. The passes can only be claimed at a park gate ticket booth. To claim the passes, valid military ID must be shown; activated National Guard and Reservists must also show their active duty orders.

In addition to the one free pass, each qualifying person can also purchase up to five 3-day companion passes for $39 each. If the qualifying person cannot visit a park to purchase these companion tickets, a spouse may do so instead.

Summer Annual Passholder special – The first ticket promotion this summer is an Annual Passholder special.
