Miley Cyrus celebrates her 16th birthday at Disneyland

Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus celebrated her Sweet 16 at a private event at Disneyland this past Sunday night. 5,000 fans paid $250 each for the opportunity to attend the party, which featured a concert and an array of special activities. Visible preparations for the event began on Friday, and continued throughout the weekend.

Although Disneyland was scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday for the event, flyers distributed to visitors as they parked that morning warned that some areas of the park would close even earlier. Toontown closed at 3:00 p.m., with several food service locations following suit shortly afterwards. Dozens of fans tried to claim spots along the purple carpet in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, hoping to be allowed to stay for the celebrity arrivals, but cast members stationed in the area broke the news that the entire park would be emptied of guests before the party.

Once Disneyland closed, many visitors crowded into Disney's California Adventure, creating lines for attractions and food service locations. The Mission Tortilla Factory even sported a 15-minute wait. DCA temporarily reopened the recently-shuttered Vineyard Room for the day, serving the same appetizer and wine flight selection offered during Food & Wine Weekends.

Event guests were welcomed into Disneyland at 6:00 p.m. Kristine Anzalone, daughter of MousePlanet staff photographer Frank Anzalone, attended the purple carpet arrivals and shares her photographs throughout this update.

A huge stage was constructed on Tom Sawyer Island in preparation for the live concert, and venues around the waterfront were transformed into "party zones" for the night. The French Market became the KIIS-FM Rock Cafe, the Golden Horseshoe Saloon offered a space for party guests to play the Ultimate Band game, photo booths and "record your own CD" stations were set up on the Frontierland dock, and a space near the Haunted Mansion turned into a "Miley Game Zone" sponsored by Disney Interactive Studios.

The event ended with a fireworks display at 11:30 p.m., after which guests were given goody bags and cupcakes as they exited the park. MousePad member "jenniebean" attended the event, and proclaimed the night "totally worth it." Dozens of event attendees were spotted still wearing their event lanyards Monday morning. Miley's fans received a surprise last week when Disney announced that the pop star will be "taping music video segments as Hannah Montana for her new soundtrack" at a performance at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Friday, October 10, 2008. Event guests received tickets to this performance with their event credentials.

Disneyland Resort increases enforcement of "professional camera" ban

If you plan to bring your high-end camera on your next visit to the Disneyland Resort, you might want to measure your camera lenses first. Several visitors to the Resort during the week leading up to the Miley Cyrus event reported that cast members were prohibiting camera lenses longer than 6" beyond the bag check screening tents, citing a ban on "professional cameras." The scrutiny was especially high on the day of the actual event, and one MousePlanet staff member overheard a cast member explain that "there are celebrities in the parks today!" as justification for refusing to allow the visitor to enter the park with a long zoom lens.

American Idol singer David Archuleta came for Miley's big party. Photo by Kristine Anzalone.

Officially, a Disneyland Resort spokesperson says "it has always been our policy that professional lenses are not allowed inside the resort without a public relations host," but some readers and cast members allege that the crackdown is a result of paparazzi behavior during a recent visit by actress Lindsay Lohan (link). Britney Spears, Victoria Beckham and Courtney Cox have all had encounters with professional photographers at the Resort in recent years.

In discussions on our MousePad message board, several readers pointed out that they own amateur or "pro-sumer" lenses longer than 6", and wonder why the Resort is focusing on the equipment, rather than the behavior by celebrity photographers (link). It's likely that this heightened enforcement may be relaxed now that the big event is over, but we've asked the Disneyland Resort to clarify their definition of "professional" equipment so readers know what to expect on future visits. We'll share their response in a future Update.

Fortuosity Shoppe opens on Main Street

MousePlanet's Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix shares her thoughts on the new Fortuosity Shoppe at Disneyland in her MousePlanet Blog.

When Disneyland closed the New Century Timepieces shop in July to make room for the new Fortuosity Shoppe, they promised that the new retail location would be "filled with an eclectic offering of accessories, apparel and gift items." I've been eagerly awaiting the opening of this shop, and made a trip Friday morning for the grand reopening. As a Disney collector, I was anxious to see what new merchandise would be offered. As a retail store owner, I was curious to see how this new boutique would be set up and merchandised. The merchant in me was suitably delighted by the look of the new shop, but none of the merchandise offerings were compelling enough to entice me to open my wallet.

The new Fortuosity Shoppe packs a lot of product in a fairly small space. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

First, the good news for worried collectors - the Artisan watch program has returned to its proper home on Main Street, and you can still watch your favorite artist work in the store's front window. The display cases have been replaced with a new set of cabinets, creating more room at the cash register. This space was needed, as the display cases and cash registers that once filled the center of the shop have been removed entirely. In their place are two display tables. A wall display fills the back corner of the shop, and several more cases and cabinets complete the space. The upper walls are lined with curios and knickknacks, and chandeliers drip from the ceiling.

The merchandise is loosely divided into products for men, women and home decor, and is presented in casual, "lifestyle" displays like those you would find at Urban Outfitters. The Disney-logo items are balanced with non-Disney merchandise, including a scattering of pieces from designers like Betsey Johnson. The merchandising in this shop is wonderful, and if I were hiring a retail merchandiser I would be recruiting from the ranks of whoever designed this space. In fact, the merchandising is SO well executed that you almost overlook the fact that there is really very little here that isn't available elsewhere. The birdcage filled with Mickey Mouse antenna toppers is adorable, but plastic bins of the same item are stacked next to every cash register in the park. The same can be said of the Rubik's Cubes, Mickey Mouse frames, baseball caps and key chains offered for sale in this store.

Gifts and accessories for men fill one display. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

This Skyway shirt is one of the more popular items in the shop. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

As a retailer, I also noted that much of the non-Disney merchandise bought for this shop is generic gift-store filler widely available at your local Hallmark store, most of it sourced from two giftware manufacturers. The pretty porcelain cups and spoons from Two's Company, displayed next to the Tinker Bell t-shirts, are nice, but not as nice as the better-quality originals by Franz (link). Disney also picked up some pieces from the Home Chic Home line by Two's Company, as well as a whole slew of glittery but generic ornaments and pins by Midwest / Seasons of Cannon Falls.

There are a few bright spots in the collection. A pretty wallpaper-print purse was a hit this weekend, and sold out by Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, most of the Disney merchandise is not exclusive to this store, and I spotted the same bag in DCA and the World of Disney Store later that day. There are also two "tissue tee" shirts featuring attraction poster images of the Disneyland Monorail and the Skyway Buckets.

The blue purse on the left was exceptionally popular during the opening weekend, but the floral-print tool set left some scratching their heads. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

Disney says that "this ever-changing location will continuously reinvent itself," and it's certainly possible that some or all of the merchandise intended for this location has not yet arrived. For now, the shop is definitely worth a look, if only to admire the creative displays, but don't expect to find anything truly amazing for sale.

Halloween Event tickets, Trick or Treat?

According to the Disneyland Resort Web site, tickets to the five Friday night dates of Mickey's Trick-or-Treat Party are sold out, and have been since late September, but the morning before the opening night event a sign was posted just inside the bag check tents nearest Downtown Disney offering tickets to that evening's Party. Oddly enough, two readers reported that the sign posted inside the bag check tents nearest Harbor Blvd. indicated that the event was sold out. A cast member lead at the ticket booths said that about 300 tickets were released for sale about 1:00 p.m. the day of the event; tickets were still available when the event began.

A sign advertises tickets for the "sold out" October 3 event. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

So, what does this mean for people searching for tickets to a "sold out" night? Will additional tickets be released before every event? Disney apparently has two sets of tickets for each night, one set for online advance purchases and one set for in-person sales at the ticket booths. If the event you want to attend is showing as sold out on the Disneyland Web site, it might be worth checking with the Resort directly to see if they have any tickets available. The ticket booths currently say they really are sold out for the remaining Friday nights, including Halloween, but this is something to keep in mind if additional event nights "sell out" online.

Disneyland Resort announces new entertainment for Fall

The Disneyland Resort announced that a new “High School Musical 3: Right Here! Right Now!” show will premiere on Friday, October 24 at Disney's California Adventure. The current High School Musical show will be updated for the theatrical release of “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.”

The Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar will open at Disney's California Adventure on Monday, October 20. This new feature will present concept art and models from the DCA expansion, including a video presentation by Imagineers. Disney says "the showcase will be updated regularly so that fans can stay abreast of developments."

Disneyland's Pixie Hollow will open on Tuesday, October 28th, creating a new home for Tinker Bell and her pixie friends from the upcoming movie.

This and That

... Just a warning for readers who are planning visits to the Disneyland Resort this week - prepare for crowds. The "traditional" track schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, as well as public schools throughout California, are closed on Thursday, October 9 in unofficial observance of the Yom Kippur holiday, and many other schools schedule "Fall Break" around the long Columbus Day weekend. Disneyland Park will be open extended hours October 9 and 13, and larger-than-usual crowds should be expected the entire weekend.

...The Disneyland Resort has discontinued an offering known as the "Shoppers Pass." Under this little-known program, customers who wanted to purchase something from a store inside Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure could get a pass valid for one hour, presumably enough time to get to the store, purchase the item and exit the park. Customers who did not return within an hour were charged for the price of a one-day ticket. Now that the program has been discontinued, customers who want to purchase merchandise available only in the theme parks will need to use Disney's DelivEARS service.

...The Disneyland Resort has published park hours through the end of January, 2009. It appears that the holiday season officially ends Sunday, January 4 2009, after which both the Haunted Mansion and "it's a small world" will close for the removal of their respective holiday overlays. The Haunted Mansion will be closed for at least a week longer than it was during the 2008 removal, and "it's a small world," which has been closed for 9 months this year for an extensive renovation, will close again for another month.

... The Pioneer Mercantile in Frontierland is sporting a new collection of Western-inspired merchandise, including the return of the Minnetonka Moccasins previously offered at the store. This revival of land-specific merchandise is said to have been prompted by a visit by John Lasseter, who complained that the same assortment of merchandise was carried throughout the Resort.

...Disney Cruise Line president Tom McAlpin announced the 2010 itineraries for the Disney Cruise Line during an event in New York Monday morning. The Disney Magic will return to Europe for an extended summer of cruises in the Mediterranean and the Baltic. DCL will offer five different itineraries, including a 12-night Northern European Capitals cruise with an overnight stay in St. Petersburg, Russia, plus two transatlantic cruises. While the Disney Magic is abroad, the Disney Wonder will introduce a series of 5-night Bahamian itineraries to complement the ship's 4-night itineraries. View the complete itineraries and chat with fellow readers on our MousePad discussion boards (link).

    Current Discounts & Promotions

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

This information is pulled from many sources but much thanks go to MouseSavers.com for providing the bulk of the information. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link).

    Deluxe Annual Passport
    Regulary $269

Costco members can receive a $50 Disneyland gift card when they purchase a Deluxe Disneyland Resort annual passport for $269 at a participating Costco location. The offer should be available at all Costco stores that currently sell Disneyland admission, but the vouchers may not have arrived in all locations yet. The ticket will also be available through the Costco Web site in the near future.

There are no residency restrictions on this ticket, and it can be upgraded to a Deluxe with parking or Premium passport. Better still, the $50 gift card can be applied towards the cost of the upgrades, which nearly pays for the $59 parking option or drops the net cost of a Premium Annual Passport to just $339.

    Hotel / Travel Packages

Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey's Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – Package includes accomodations one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at four DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!, Golden Dreams); Preferred Showing of Turtle Talk with Crush (Priority Viewing at the first Turtle Talk with Crush show of the day, on any one day - one voucher per Guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a "Character Call" from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Contact Disney Travel or your favorite travel agent.

Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. See the Rainforest Cafe Web site for details (link).

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
