One case of "Influenza A (H1N1) virus, human" ("swine flu") was confirmed in a Mexican tourist in Orlando last week. The tourist had spent time visiting Walt Disney World and other tourist sites during their trip. Some with vacation plans are worried, some even to the point of planning to cancel their trips. Disney has reportedly even rerouted this week's voyage of the Disney Wonder to stop in Nassau instead of Cozumel, Mexico. Why?
While the nation and the world is in a "pandemic panic" over the spread of this illness, the fact remains that it is just another flu variant, albeit a new one, and there are a total of 226 cases identified in the U.S. as of yesterday, with one death. That death was a 23-month-old Mexican infant who was already sick when he entered the U.S. for treatment. Meanwhile, so far this flu season (since September 28, 2008) variants of the seasonal flu have infected over 25,000 Americans and the flu is estimated to be responsible for between 6.1-7.6 percent of all deaths in the United States during that time.
Does this mean that you shouldn't worry at all about the new flu variant? No. Just because it doesn't appear to be any deadlier or more infectious (at this point) than any other flu variant, that doesn't mean that you should not take any precautions any more than you should ignore the rest of flu season. We've seen numbers indicating that approximately 3 percent of those exposed to the new H1N1 variant actually experience flu-like symptoms. However, rerouting a cruise ship to avoid a known outbreak of a disease is a prudent measure, especially with the ship being close quarters after departure from the port. While you should go ahead and enjoy your Walt Disney World or Disney Cruise Line vacation without letting the public panic about the flu getting in your way, you should still practice standard hygienic precautions.
In a letter left in all Disney hotel rooms on Saturday, after stressing that sanitary precautions taken by Disney are more than adequate (which has been confirmed independently by the Orange County Health Department), Disney reiterates four points stressed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
If you find yourself suffering from flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention and try to avoid infecting others, but if you are healthy, please go ahead and enjoy your Disney vacation.

You've seen photos of the stage and control booth going up since early this year, and now it's showtime! Stitch's SuperSonic Celebration, a live stage show in Tomorrowland, officially debuts on Wednesday, May 6, though it started preview shows yesterday.
The new show "celebrates everything worth celebrating around the universe in honor of 'Galaxy Day.'" The mischievous alien appears in animated form on a screen behind the stage, interacting with guests in a fashion similar to that used for Turtle Talk with Crush and Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor, while live performers portray party host Tip Trendo and his backup dancers the Galactic Girls, and more. The dance party will get the little ones up on their feet, while hopefully also entertaining the older set. The show is expected to run six times each day.

Tickets are now on sale for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. The Halloween Party will be held on 23 nights (down from 25 nights last year) on September 4, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29, October 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29 and 31. The Christmas Party will be held on 18 nights (the same as last year) on November 10, 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 29, December 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18.
Tickets for both parties will carry a price tag of $52 plus tax ($55.38) for adults and $46 plus tax ($48.99) for children ages 3-9 with advance purchase. On the day of the party, the price increases to $59 plus tax ($62.84) for adults and $53 plus tax ($56.45) for children ages 3-9. For the October 9, 15 and 23 Halloween parties and the November 29, December 4, 11, 17 and 18 Christmas parties, there will be no advance purchase discount. For the October 31 Halloween party, tickets will have a special price of $64 plus tax ($68.16) for adults and $58 plus tax ($61.77) for children ages 3-9, with no discounts available. It is uncertain at this time whether the October 29 date carries the advance purchase discount.
Passholder and Disney Vacation Club member discounts will be available for the Halloween parties on September 4, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29, October 1 and 6, and for the Christmas parties on November 10, 12, 13, 17, 19, December 6 and 8. Those discounted prices are $49 plus tax ($52.19) for adults and $43 plus tax ($45.80) for children ages 3-9.

Disney has introduced a new endurance series medal to entice runners into entering multiple events this fall. The Fall Race Challenge medal will be given to those who complete two of the three fall endurance series events. To receive the medal, you must complete and record an official time in the Race for the Taste 10K and either the Expedition Everest Challenge or the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K event. Those running the Race for the Taste 3K or the Tower of Terror 5K will not qualify.
Registration for all three events is open now. Disney and Mars Snackfood have come to an agreement to produce Disney-themed "My M&Ms Memorable Moments" blends. Nine different blends will be available via mail order to help enhance your parties. …During the special Imagineering talk given in honor of the 20th anniversary of Disney's Hollywood Studios last Friday, Imagineer Bob Weis showed an image of the original view down Hollywood Boulevard looking at the Chinese Theater, before the Sorcerer's Hat was installed. According to reports from attendees via Twitter, he then said something like "hopefully, we'll see this view again soon." Wild cheers followed. Take that bit of information as you will.
…If you're looking to meet Bolt, Mittens and Rhino from the Disney animated feature Bolt at the Magic of Disney Animation attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios, time is running out. The characters will only be there through Sunday, May 9. After a week without characters, the meet-and-greet inside the attraction will feature Carl, Russell and Dug from Disney/Pixar's Up beginning Friday, May 15.
…The nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, Inc. (FLASH), opened an addition to their StormStruck exhibit in Innoventions. The new "flood wall" exhibit discusses important facts about flooding including ways for homeowners to prepare for flood and protect themselves from costly flood damage.

…A bill passed by the Florida Legislature last Wednesday will allow buyers to walk away from their mortgages if they lose their income. This debt-cancellation program is expected to increase timeshare sales, including at the Disney Vacation Club.
…Last Wednesday, the Florida Legislature voted to continue a public-records exemption for for certain proprietary details filed with government agencies. This means that blueprints, schematic drawings, building plans, etc. filed by major organizations can remain secret. The exemption has been in place for five years now, and is officially to protect the organizations (recreational as well as industrial) from acts of terrorism.
…For those wondering, Brandon Ryan Woll, the former server at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort who was sentenced late last November to 18 months in federal prison for the detonation of a pipe bomb in Downtown Disney in July 2007, is now serving his time at Fort Dix in New Jersey. He is scheduled for release next May 27, at which time he will have to serve 2 years of probation and 100 hours of community service.
…Planning a late night at the parks on Independence Day? You've got plenty of options. At the Magic Kingdom, "Disney's Celebrate America!-A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky" will explode at 9 p.m. on July 4, while SpectroMagic will be performed at 10:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Epcot will push things back an hour and show Illuminations: Reflections of Earth at 10 p.m. Fantasmic will run at 9:00 at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
