Summer Nightastic returns June 11
The Summer Nightastic! promotion is returning to the Disneyland Resort from June 11 to August 29 this year with both the “Magic” fireworks spectacular (featuring Tinker Bell and Dumbo in flight above Sleeping Beauty Castle) and Fantasmic, enhanced last year with a new Maleficent dragon.
Introduced last summer at Disneyland and debuting this summer at Walt Disney World, the West Coast version of Summer Nightastic! is missing the “Pixie-dusted” version of Disney's Electrical Parade, which returned to Disney's California Adventure last week for the Spring Break run, but is heading to Walt Disney World in April. [If you'd like to see Disney's Electrical Parade before it “glows away” to Florida, the parade is performed nightly at 9 p.m. through Friday through April 11, and will return April 16 to 18 for a final farewell weekend.] Also missing from the Summer Nightastic! announcement was any mention of the Pixie Hollow Enchantment, the nighttime light-and-music overlay of the Pixie Hollow meet-and-greet area, and the TLT Dance Club at Tomorrowland Terrace in Disneyland, which featured live bands and DJs from Southern California radio stations.
The big new addition for the 2010 version of Summer Nightastic! is World of Color, the new “nighttime water spectacular” debuting at Disney's California Adventure. Perhaps trying to avoid a repeat of last year's Dragon saga (in which the new Maleficent dragon heavily featured in Disneyland's print and television advertising never actually took the Fantasmic! stage before Summer Summer Nightastic! ended in August), Disney says only that World of Color will be part of Summer Nightastic! , but has so far declined even to hint at a possible opening date.
New Toy Story parking lot opens
Just in time for Spring Break, the Resort opened a new parking lot this weekend, adding nearly 2,700 new parking spaces. The new lots, individually named “Buzz,” “Jessie,” and “Woody,” but collectively known as the “Toy Story” lot, are located on the site of a former strawberry field about a mile southeast of the Disneyland Resort, south of Katella Avenue and east of Harbor Boulevard. The entrance to the lot is at Harbor Boulevard and West Convention Way. The Toy Story lot opens daily at least through the summer season and then on peak attendance days, and a portion of the lot will still be used for large events at the Anaheim Convention Center. Normal Disneyland Resort parking rates apply, and Disneyland Annual Passholders with parking privileges on their pass are welcome—Disney changed the parking policy late last year, and Passholders can now use their parking pass at any of the Disneyland Resort pay lots.

The Toy Story lot offers amenities that might help visitors save time when they arrive at the Esplanade. “Vacation planning” kiosks offer a small selection of basic admission passes (single-day, single-day hoppers and multi-day hoppers) and also sell stroller rental passes. These kiosks do not have all of the options of the ticket booths; for example, they only accept credit cards, do not sell Annual Passes, and cannot process cast member discounts. The kiosks are built from surplus DCA outdoor vending carts and aren't very attractive, but visitors who can save 20 minutes in line by purchasing their tickets before they get to Disneyland probably won't complain too much.

Shuttle bus service is offered to and from the new lots, using 20 wheelchair-accessible buses leased from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). At a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new parking lot, Disney executives and representatives from the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) and OCTA spoke about the public/private partnership involved in operating the facility. ATN is leasing the OCTA buses, recently idled due to budget cuts and route closures, to provide transportation from the Toy Story lot to the Disneyland Resort. ATN hired 15 laid-off OCTA bus drivers to drive the route, and is also utilizing drivers from the San Gabriel Valley's Foothill Transit system to fill driver seats. Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis said “It's a win, win, win—we take care of our guests, drivers who lost their jobs have jobs, and buses that were sitting idle, and our tax dollars were paying for that, now will be back in use. Hopefully it's a good example of how we can all work together.”

A San Francisco Bay Area company has been hired to train these drivers for the new routes, which take about 10 minutes each way. The route from the Toy Story lot to Disneyland is a little complicated, starting with the bus cutting through the Katella cast member parking lot (KCML) before heading west on Katella Avenue to Disneyland Drive. After turning onto Disneyland Drive, the bus enters a backstage area and drives behind the construction site in the former Timon parking lot before arriving at the former Lion King tram stop outside Disneyland. The reverse route exits Disney property at the former Harbor Boulevard main entrance; drivers then head east across Magic Way and south on Clementine Street before cutting back through KCML.
The Toy Story lot includes shade structures, something not found in any other Disneyland Resort parking lot. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Two clusters of shelters in the Toy Story lot provide shade for visitors waiting in line for the next bus—on Saturday morning there were at least 10 buses on the route and the wait time was minimal. Each wheelchair-accessible bus can seat about 35 people, with additional room for visitors to stand. Strollers fit in the wide center aisle at the front of the bus, though passengers are asked to fold the stroller to the smallest possible dimension before boarding. On the Disneyland side, visitors board at the former Lion King tram loading area, which poses a challenge during the busy evening return period. The tram loading area was designed to divide crowds into multiple groups for loading onto a tram, not to create the single-file line best suited to filling a bus. One MousePlanet reader complained that some visitors were “pushing and shoving” to get onto the bus Friday night, and that she had to enlist the help of a cast member to let her board in her wheelchair before visitors with strollers “pushed me aside” when the next bus arrived.

New summer hotel discounts – Two More Days & Nights Free or save up to 40%
The Disneyland Resort launched a Summer hotel discount offer last week, sweetening the deal when compared to the Spring Buy 3, Get 2 Free offer. This latest deal offers a five-night, five-day Disneyland Resort vacation package for the price of a three-night, three-day package, giving you two “free” hotel nights and two additional days of theme park admission. The Summer “Two More Days & Nights Free” offer is valid for arrivals May 1 and September 26, 2010, and you must book by September 1, 2010 to receive this discount. You can choose to stay either at a Disneyland Resort Hotel or at one of the Good Neighbor Hotels. The Spring version, available for booking through April 1 and valid for arrivals through April 29, 2010, also extends the hotel stay from three to five nights, but requires visitors to purchase a five-day parkhopper ticket to qualify.
If you are a Disneyland Resort annual passholder or already have valid admission for your next visit, you can take advantage of a second promotion that offers discounts at the three Disneyland Resort hotels with a minimum two-night stay. The discounts are 40 percent at the Grand Californian Hotel, 35 percent at the Disneyland Hotel and 30 percent at the Paradise Pier Hotel.
To book either package, call your favorite travel agent, book online at www.disneyland.com, or call the Walt Disney Travel Company at )800) 854-3104.
AAA discount changes
MousePlanet reader Neil wrote us last month to say that the American Automobile Association had discontinued the 10 percent discounts previously offered at select Disneyland Resort restaurants, including Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel's Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy's Kitchen. At the time, we checked with the Disney Dine Line, who said they hadn't heard anything about a change, as well as with a server at one of the restaurants, who said her location was still honoring the discount. After several other readers reported the same, we checked again and confirmed that AAA ended the dining discount earlier this year. AAA travel agent Jennifer Rich tells us the agency is also about to discontinue the 10 percent AAA discount on the Character Dining option on the AAA Vacation Packages, effective for arrivals after April 29, 2010.
AAA members still have access to some dining discounts at the Disneyland Resort. Several Downtown Disney merchants participate in AAA's Diamond Card program, and still offer discounts to AAA members. Jennifer provided a current list of participating locations and discounts – be sure to double check before you dine.

Remembering Fess Parker
Disney Legend Fess Parker, known to legions of Disney fans as TV's Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, passed away March 18 at his home near Santa Barbara. Parker was 85.
Disney CEO Robert Iger released a statement saying: “Like many kids growing up in the 50's, Davy Crockett was my first hero, and I had the coonskin cap to prove it. Fess Parker's unforgettable, exciting and admirable performance as this American icon has remained with me all these years, as it has for his millions of fans around the world. Fess is truly a Disney Legend, as is the heroic character he portrayed, and while he will certainly be missed, he will never be forgotten.”

This and That
…When Virgin America announced last week that the airline would begin offering non-stop service to Orlando from Los Angeles and San Francisco, Disney fans up and down California were thrilled. However, missing from the headline and buried in the sixth paragraph of the press release was the news that the airline will cease service to John Wayne airport on May 26, just a year after the carrier began service to the Orange County airport. Disneyland-bound Virgin America passengers, including those who already hold tickets after May 26, now have the choice of flying into Los Angeles International or San Diego.
…Disney Cruise Line this week begins imposing a $250 fee for staterooms showing signs of smoking. According to Disney, this “stateroom recovery fee” covers the cost of deep cleaning, including air filter replacement, carpet extraction, and the cleaning and replacing drapes, comforters, blankets, and pillows. This new policy, which becomes effect on Thursday, March 25 for the Disney Wonder and Saturday, March 27 for the Magic, also applies to the Dream when it launches in 2011. While passengers are still permitted to smoke on their private verandahs, they should take extra care to keep the sliding glass door closed to prevent any smoke from entering the cabin.
…April 1 is the last date to book the current Disneyland Resort Buy 3, Get 2 Free and Alaska Airlines Kids Fly Free offers. Details in our Discounts and Promotions section below.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (

These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011. Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $204/$174 Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($149) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Disneyland Web site (link). Tickets include one early admission day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday) (link). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011. Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($159.95) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California (link). Unlike some recent offers, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have almost a full year to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires on August 23, 2010. The ticket is blocked out the week between Christmas and New Years (inclusive of both holidays), and for the week of March 26 to April 4, which gives you an idea of what Disneyland expects to be the peak Spring Break period. The ticket is not blocked out on any other holidays – including Labor Day, Thanksgiving or even the 4th of July – and can be upgraded to any Annual Passport except the SoCal Select pass. The Costco Web site states in three different places—including a bold, bright red headline—that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (ie, you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Advance Purchase 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus tickets ($199/$169) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date.
