The word on World of Color

Next month's debut of the World of Color has Disney fans scrambling for the latest news, and the lack of any solid details from Disney is creating an information vacuum where every breath of rumor is sucked dry. As a site devoted to Disney news and information, it's hard to say "we just don't know," but the truth is - we just don't know.

Why not? Because it seems Disney doesn't know. At least the cast members in guest-facing departments don't have any official answers, including the Disney Dine Line cast members fielding endless calls from people who want to book a Premium Viewing package for World of Color, and the Disney Travel operators trying to help tourists plan their trip to see the new show. With the show just one month away, it seems like some of this information would be finalized and publicized by now, but it's just not. When we ask our sources about various possibilities and rumors we've heard, the most common answer is "nothing's final yet," with "things change every day" being a close second.

Still, we know our readers want to make plans, so here's our best compilation of World of Color information. Please remember, until Disney makes any official announcements, anything we say here is, by definition, unofficial, and should not be used to make non-refundable travel plans.

Previews - Yes or No? We had previously been told by CM sources that cast previews for World of Color would begin May 18th, followed by Annual Passholder previews and as much as two weeks of "soft opening" shows before the June 11th launch date. In fact, a Disneyland Resort spokesperson told the Orange County Register last month that "Disney park annual pass holders and employees will get a chance to see dress rehearsals before the official opening," but did not provide dates.

Now it seems that everything has changed, and there will be NO World of Color previews at all. Those DCA cast members who must to be trained to work crowd control or food service for World of Color will be sent to mandatory orientation sessions where they might see a portion of the show, but there will be no cast previews of the full show before June 11th. As of this writing, that goes for Annual Passholders, Club 33 members and D23 subscribers. If you want to be the first to see the new show, plan to be there on June 11th.

How many shows? As of last week, we've heard the plan is to hold three shows per night, with the final show starting at 11:30, a half-hour after DCA park closes for the night. The three-show-per-night schedule is expected to continue through Labor Day, provided the crowds keep coming to DCA.

What about park and attraction hours? DCA's park hours have been changed starting June 11th to reflect an 11pm closing time most nights, one or two hours later than DCA operated the same dates last year. We've heard that most of the Paradise Pier attractions except Toy Story Midway Mania will close shortly before the first World of Color show begins, both for safety reasons and so as not to distract from World of Color. (No word on whether Mulholland Madness and Jumpin' Jellyfish will be closed as well). To compensate for the early closure of the one third of the park, park managers are supposedly considering a plan to open Paradise Pier one or two hours before the rest of DCA, somewhat like the Epcot Park operation where Future World opens and closes before World Showcase.

Showpass - Yes or No? The "showpass" idea would re purpose Fastpass machines from existing attractions and reconfigure them to issue passes for World of Color. The plan is reportedly still under consideration, but the decision to add additional shows each night makes the logistics of such an offer that much more complicated.

Update 5/10: A MousePlanet reader, who asked that their name not be used, sent us a little more information about the possible implementation of the Showpass concept. They confirmed that there will be three nightly shows of World of Color, but Showpass will be used only for the first show. They went on to say, "The pass would be available at park opening, from the machines near Grizzly River Rapids. There will be 4 colored areas of viewing, and 4 Showpass machines, 1 to match each color. People will be warned that if they want their family to be together in one area, then they all need to get the same color pass. Once these passes are gone for the first show, that's it for Showpass. Viewers for the 2nd & 3rd show will be corralled out near the entrance to the park on a first-come first-served basis. So if you don't want to get up early and get your Showpass, you'll still have the opportunity to line up and see either the 2nd or 3rd show. Time will tell, of course, how early you'll have to line up to get into either one of these shows."

Even with Showpass, your best view will likely come by purchasing one of the Premium Viewing packages.

What about Premium Viewing? You need look no further than the blueprints of the World of Color stage and viewing area on display in the Blue Sky Cellar to realize that there are better and worse places from which to watch the new show. [These are the color-coded viewing areas mentioned above] Many vantage points have an obstructed or side-on view, and the newly-built viewing area reportedly has a smaller capacity than projected. With Disney clearly expecting enough crowds to fill three shows per night, competition for the "sweet spot" is going to be tough.

The Disneyland Web site added a blurb to their World of Color page last week which read "World of Color takes the idea of dinner and a show to a whole new level. Whether you reserve one of the special dining experiences or want to get a quick snack before the show, World of Color will be the centerpiece of a great night out," but the posting provided no details. Disney has previously offered "Premium Viewing" packages for popular shows, the best-known being the Fantasmic dessert package in Disneyland, but they're looking to considerably expand that program for the World of Color.

The plan is to sell some form of boxed dinner or dessert package that will come with access to a reserved viewing area (note: not a reserved seat), and is intended to be eaten while you're waiting to be led into the viewing area. As it's been explained to us, you'd reserve your box meal/dessert up to one month ahead of time, then pick it up an hour or so before your show time, get in a line for the reserved viewing area, and eat while you wait. The original plan apparently included just a dinner option, but, with shows starting as late as 11:30 pm, a dessert option is now under consideration. No menu or pricing details have been released yet, and we're trying to figure out how up to 2000 people per show are going to feel about trying eat a box dinner/dessert while sitting/standing in line, presumably with no chairs or tables.

To add to the confusion, nobody seems able or willing to explain what's going on at Ariel's Grotto. We know the restaurant isn't accepting reservations for dinner after June 11th, but so far there are no details about how or if the restaurant will be used to offer the dinner package that most people believe is in the works. A Disney cast member told MousePad member ogold72 that more would be released May 31st.

As always, we have our ears to the ground and will post the latest information as we have it. If you don't already read our MousePad discussion board, we highly recommend checking there between Weekly Park Updates for the latest news as we learn it.

Rivers of America reopens with new scenery

After a 4-month refurbishment, Disneyland's Rivers of America was refilled last week and reopened this weekend with new theming and scenes along the water's edge. The Rivers of America are now intended to represent four U.S. waterways: the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Potomac and the Rio Grande. The Columbia section includes the former "burning cabin," now simply a settler's cabin occupied by Mike Fink.

A keelboat from the former Disneyland attraction is anchored at the shore. The Potomac section includes the Indian Village, which now features one or two live horses in a corral behind new teepees. The Rio Grande section, visible from the back edge of Tom Sawyer Island, is the new home for the eagle nest from the former burning cabin scene. The eagles are joined by two new mountain lions and moose relocated from another river scene. The mine cart on the tracks across the river was removed, replaced with a rock slide scene. The plants and trees along each section of river reinforce the sense of place, though we noted that the plants along the edge of Tom Sawyer Island are so sparse in spots that they won't prevent someone from accidentally - or intentionally - falling into the river.

Mark Eades at the Orange County Register put together a nice video of the new Rivers of America, giving you a view that - at least until the Mark Twain and Sailing Ship Columbia return to passenger service - you can only get by paddling yourself around the island in a Davy Crockett Explorer Canoe.

Straight from the Mouse's mouth

Last Wednesday the Inside the Magic Web site linked to a You Tube video posted by a Disneyland visitor who had visited with Mickey Mouse in Toontown earlier that week. In the video, Mickey Mouse greets guests who are visiting his "movie barn" behind his house in Toontown - and actually speaks to them, in several instances calling them by name. The video received thousands of views, and prompted calls to Disneyland's media relations department asking for more information. The next morning, Disneyland posted an entry on the Disney Parks Blog acknowledging that "Some lucky Disneyland park guests experienced a very special meet and greet with Mickey Mouse this week." Disney also released their own video of the meet-and-greet to demonstrate Mickey's amazing new vocal abilities. The Blog post went on to say "This was part of a process we call “playtesting” as it gives us a chance to develop new concepts with our guests long before they end up in the parks," (in other words, this was just a test - don't expect to see this on your next visit). Sure enough, during repeated visits to Mickey's house last week, we were told that Mickey wasn't feeling very talkative, but would be happy to just pose for photos with us. Below are the You Tube video, and the official Disney video.

Mickey's Trick or Treat Party returns to Disneyland

Mickey's Trick or Treat party will be hosted inside Disneyland this year, marking the first time the Halloween event has been offered at Disneyland since 1995. While Disney has not yet released an official schedule, our sources tell us the events will be held every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday night in October, making the likely dates October 1, 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, 29 and 31. Pricing has not yet been released, but expect to pay a premium over the DCA version of the event. If Disneyland borrows a page from Walt Disney World, you should also expect to pay more on weekend nights, and for Halloween week events.

As Disney is not yet ready to confirm this report, (it's possible they are holding the official announcement until after the World of Color press event), we have no details about entertainment or attraction offerings. Though many consider Walt Disney World's Halloween event-exclusive "Boo to You" parade alone to be worth the price of admission, it is unlikely that Disneyland will receive its very own Halloween parade for just a year or two. There's a rumor that the Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy overlay and the Halloween Screams fireworks show may only be offered during the Halloween event, but we feel it's highly unlikely the Resort would court a public relations black eye by taking the two most-publicized elements of last year's wildly successful Halloween Time promotion and showing them only to people willing to shell out the extra cash for Trick or Treat Party tickets.

Several readers have asked how the event schedule and associated early park closings will impact performances of Fantasmic. When DCA hosted the Trick or Treat Party, that park closed at 6 or 7 on Party nights to prepare for the event. With sunset between 6 and 6:30 in October, that doesn't allow for pre-closing performances of Fantasmic or fireworks before the day guests are politely ushered out of the Disneyland on event nights. The schedule also effectively adds "blockout nights" for the annual passholders, leaving Monday, Wednesday or Thursday nights the only options for SoCal and SoCal Select passholders who want to see Fantasmic or the Halloween fireworks during October.

We'll update pricing and entertainment details as we have them.

DCA gets new Toys

The A Toy Story 3 marketing has begun in earnest at the Disneyland Resort, with Lots-O’-Huggin’ Bear joining the cast of the Pixar Play Parade this weekend. Lots-O' appears in the Toy Story section at the end of the parade, and rides in an oversized toy dump truck with Toy Story 3 license plates.

Outside the Toy Story Midway Mania ride in Paradise Pier, an oversized toy "blister card" and flat cutouts featuring new characters from the upcoming Toy Story sequel are available for photo opportunities. The blister card is a fun prop, but we'd recommend waiting until after dark to get your photos. During the day, light reflects off the "plastic" front of the "box," ruining the photo. At night, lights inside the box provide enough illumination for a good photo without the glare.

This and That

...Corn dog fans will be thrilled to know that Disneyland's Little Red Wagon cart has reopened on Main Street.

...The Disney Gallery will close for a few days in May to install a new "DAY ONE DISNEYLAND" exhibit focusing on Disneyland's 55th Anniversary. The Gallery will reopen the morning of Saturday, May 22 with a product release and signing event featuring Imagineers and artists including Charles and Bruce Boyer, Jim Crouch, Jeremy Fulton, Larry Nikolai, Noah, Maggie Parr, Jimmy Pickering, George Scribner and Yakovetic. Additional information and images of some of the artwork to be offered are available on the Disney Gallery Web site.

...MousePad member HTanner tells us about an unfortunate situation she experienced last week when staying at a local hotel, and provides a good reminder for other vacationers to remove ALL of their valuables when they leave their cars.

Warning: There is a rash of car thefts/break-ins at the hotels around Disney. How do I know?

A call awoke us at 6 am in our hotel room to let us know we were the unfortunate winners in a car break-in lottery. For what? The thieves decided to smash our passenger side window for a $10 IPod charger. NOTHING else was missing! We thought we had taken everything of value in the hotel with us. We parked in a lighted spot. We followed the suggestions of the staff. The police officer told us the thieves probably looked in, saw a cord and presumed something valuable might be attached to it. That is all that it took to smash our window in.

Now, for the good news: HoJo's manager heard what happened and immediately called our room. He arranged for a mobile glass company to come out and repair our van while we swam in the pool. Then, they gave us a credit for the amount of the repair! I have always LOVED the HoJo, but this really went above and beyond, imo.

Anyhow, when you park at the hotel, take a good look through the windows of your car and decide if anything visible might look valuable to a thief. Take it all inside! You never know what they are willing to break in for!

HTanner went on to explain that this was not an isolated incident; saying "the police officer told us there had been quite a lot of car break-ins over the past couple of months," and that the hotel had placed fliers in the parking lots.

...Merchandise featuring the Marvel Superheroes characters is now available at selected shops in the Disneyland Resort, including D Street in Downtown Disney.

Vinylmation trading has come to Disneyland. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

...Selected Disneyland stores now offer Vinylmation collectors to trade their figures with cast members, much like pin trading. Participating locations have a "blind" trader box, which holds 24-3" Vinylmation figures inside an opaque black case. To trade a figure, simply point to a numbered box, and trade your own 3" figure for whatever mystery figure is in the case. There is a limit of one trade per person, per location, per day.

An eclectic collection of umbrellas provides shade in Paradise Park. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

...It didn't take too many sunny days for DCA managers to realize that the newly-opened Paradise Park lacked sufficient shade structures, so an eclectic collection of umbrellas have been placed around the park benches. The assortment of mismatched colors and patterns makes it appear that management scraped up every spare umbrella they could find across the Resort, but the umbrellas do serve to provide welcome relief from the sun.

...Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link).

One Day, One Park Ticket - Regularly $72/$62

One Day Park Hopper - Regularly $97/$87

No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.

Two Day Park Hopper - Regularly $151/$131

AOCVCB 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($149/$129) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $2 off the box-office price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. If the $1 per ticket net savings isn't enough of an incentive to pre-purchase your tickets, think of all the time you'll save by not having to stand in line at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths (link). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011.

Three Day Park Hopper - Regularly $204/$174

Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($184/$154) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. "Bonus Tickets" include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $11/day value)

AOCVCB 3-Day Bonus Ticket ($179/$149) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $5 off the advance purchase price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. If the $4 per ticket net savings isn't enough of an incentive to pre-purchase your tickets, think of all the time you'll save by not having to stand in line at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Tickets include one early admission day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday) (link). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011.

Four Day Park Hopper - Regularly $229/$199

Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($159.95) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California (link). Unlike some recent offers, this ticket has no "fuse" - you can use the first admission today, and have until August 23, 2010 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket has no further blockout days in 2010, and can be upgraded to any Annual Passport except the SoCal Select pass.

The Costco Web site states in three different places—including a bold, bright red headline—that visitors "Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599" and that "Proof of residency required upon redemption." The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized "transfer" of tickets between visitors (ie, you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket.

Advance Purchase 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus tickets ($199/$169) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. "Bonus Tickets" include one early admission day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
