| Our retired guide on visiting the park. For current info, see Park Updates: Disneyland |
|
On March 12, 2000 I took a hike around the park property itself with my camera and decided to take a look in - I had been intrigued by what I had glimpsed out of my car on the way to the parking lots. As you may know, the area around Disneyland is changing every day due to all the construction now going on. With all the new overpasses and walkways being built, they offer a unique opportunity at this time to take a peek into the backstage areas of the park. I'm sure once things come closer to completion, we'll see trees planted and fences built that will obscure some of these views. What you'll see on the next three pages is all sorts of backstage shots - and some of the new construction. Not everyone may find all these shots interesting, but if you're a fan, you may enjoy taking a gander into some areas you may never have seen before. Keep in mind each page has seven photos, and may take a bit to load. The next two pages also now have new photos taken of the West side of the park on July 27, 2000 - contributed by a kind reader. After hiking north on Harbor Blvd, this is the first shot I took from the overpass...
...what you see above is the rather unique two-story roundhouse, for both the Monorail and the Trains. The road in front you see is the Harbor Blvd. off-ramp from the I-5 south. The building at the far left of the picture houses "it's a small world." Above is a close-up of the Roundhouse - note the four entrances for each of the Monorails, Blue, Orange, Purple and Red. On the track closest to us you see the Monorail "Mule" - a diesel powered monorail tow vehicle, used to go fetch a train should the power go out, or it should otherwise break down. Behind the Roundhouse is the "executive / management" parking structure for the Team Disney Anaheim [TDA] building. You can see the distant hills of ToonTown mounted on it, to help hide it from being seen inside the park. Disneyland is very small, and space is tight backstage - you'll see how it spills out a bit into the backstage area in some photos later on in this essay.
Behind the Monorail / Train Roundhouse is a row of all sorts of warehouses, and as you can see at the left of the shot, the parade staging / parking area. It's interesting to look at all the electric carts used to shuttle around backstage. The building with the 100 on it, will be seen in a shot coming up, from Ball Rd., which it faces.
This view [above] allows you to look down the warehouse row from the East, and see the new parking structure on the other side of West St. / Disneyland Dr.
Here's some close-ups [above and below], where you can see a high-school band rehearsing out back.
Those are lighting fixtures behind the band there, they used to light up the sky above the park and were only used one year for some reason. From the a bridge going over the freeway, you can look right into the Team Disney Anaheim [TDA] building which runs alongside it. The window below apparently was dressed up to keep the pedestrians who walked by just feet away amused.
Next to the TDA building is the parking structure you saw on the last page, then [below] this warehouse building, which was also previously seen in another shot on the past page.
By the way, this is the main entrance backstage for the park, as well as the staging area for the many deliveries they get of food and merchandise, among other things. People who work there call it the Ox gate, as it faces Ox street across from it. Shot from the other side of the street above, you can see how tightly things are squeezed in back there [below]. The blue and white tent tops you see are for the Fantasyland "Wonder Bra" Theater [where Animazement is performed] and the green walls you see in the center below not only border Gadget's Go-Coaster in ToonTown, but the house Mickey's ToonTown abode also.
Continuing around the back of the park, you then head south on West St. / Disneyland Dr. and can look in on the West side of the property.
