Our retired guide on visiting the park. For current info, see Park Updates: Disneyland

You Guys Are So Nice...

Here are some of the kind things readers have e-mailed me about the guide since it's come online. I can't even begin to thank everyone for their wonderful feedback, both in its original text edition and this web version.

I just happened to run across your site today searching for some Los Angeles attractions, as I am bringing my family down to Southern Calif. for two weeks in July. I thought I had quite a bit of info from the official Disney site until I went through yours. You have an incredible amount of extremely useful information on your site. There is so much of it that will be valuable for our trip, some of which I would never have thought of.

I wanted to express my gratitude for all the assistance your site has provided. If your original intention for the site was to assist others with Disney info to make their trip a memorable one, then believe me, as far as I am concerned, and I imagine anyone else who accesses your site, you have more than succeeded! Thank you - Steve, Carol, Angela, Andrea, and Miranda

Love your site. I've made about 15 trips to the US over the years on vacation and spent well over a month in total at Disneyland. Will be there on July 4 this year for the celebrations and fireworks and whatever else is planned. Will be looking at your site up until I fly out for the US for info on the latest happenings. Greetings from Australia. - Ian

I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading your posts to A.D.D.and your D-I-G updates about current happenings at Disneyland. I believe that your posts tend to be the most thoughtful, giving credit where credit is due, and criticizing when necessary. Although I may not always agree, your opinions are well substantiated and reasons are given for your conclusions.

I only make it to Disneyland about once a year or so, so I like being kept up to date on current happenings at the park. D-I-G has helped me do so. Thanks again for your time and effort you have put in to make A.D.D. a better place to surf. - Clark

I just want to tell you how much I enjoy reading the DIG. I only get down to Disneyland about once a year, and I look forward to using your guide to check out what is being refurbished and also what will be new on my next visit. I have shared the "DIG" with many people at work who are planning a Disneyland visit. They too really appreciate the effort that you have put into this guide. This is the first time that I have logged onto your WEB site to use your guide. Its nice to know that I can keep track of things on any day of the week instead of just when its posted each month at rec.arts.disney. I also love your trip reports. I helps me to relive my visits to Disneyland. Thanks for all of your hard work. - Jacquie

Thanks very much for doing/maintaining the Disneyland Information Guide. I found it prior to my DL trip two weeks ago and it is at the top of my "Favorite Places". It was very useful and better than the "Official" DL Sites. Love your commentaries on your visits. You are very fair in your comments and critiques. We had a wonderful time watching Fantasmic from the Disney Gallery balcony. I would have never had known had it not been for the DIG. We had early admission, raced from 1st monorail to reservation line and still were 4th in line. We had to go to 2nd show. Guess the main gate had opened first. It was a memorable evening. Thanks again and keep up the good work. - SPEEDYDGON

Yoo Hoo, Al,

I am in the middle of reading and enjoying VERY much the fruits of a labor of love of yours, the Disneyland Information Guide. I am rejoining the Disney-related newsgroups after an absence, and reading this guide is a really special find for me. You probably get lots of E-mail of praise for this, Al, but I hope the readers of these newsgroups will permit me to take up a little bit of bandwidth to publicly thank you for putting together this online guide and encourage you to please please keep up the exemplary work.

In the midst of a lot of spirited discussion now about changes taking place at The Happiest Place On Earth, it's a pleasure to read a document that captures the Pixie Dust in the place and the affection within the hearts of people who love that place unconditionally.

If you are reading my message now and have never been to Disneyland, or it's been awhile since you've been there, or if the messages about changes there dishearten you, please read Al's Guide and find some little and big gems about the place that will restore your faith in Disney Magic! This document is an eye-opener and a terrific read, and a very comprehensive resource. Thank you again, Al! - Carol

Words cannot express the gratitude that we have for you and your D-I-G. Our family (My wife and I, [and our two children, went to Disneyland March 11th through the 15th, after several weeks of intense D-I-G research.

We took your advice and started our trip on a Sunday, and got to see all of the parades and events. We had the best seats for everything, including: 1. Sitting at the "sweet spot" for Fantasmic 2. Sitting in front row for Pocahontas (by waiting til the last show) 3. Having the Lion King Parade envelop us! 4. Making reservations correctly at the restaurants 5. Etc. etc. etc.

Al, practically everything included in the guide was right on! It dramatically enhanced my trip, and I often found myself taking on the role of tour guide for other visitors we happed upon. My six-year old and I used the lockers outside to swap out his tennis shoes for boots, so he could make the height for Indy (your suggestion made my son's trip all by itself!) and we could get snacks all day long.

Though this is a short note compared to much of the other feedback you have received (the new page looks excellent, by the way) I must confess that I really studied your guide down to the brass tacks and I have a deep gratitude to you for the time and effort you've put into this. Take care and again, thank you for a magical vacation!! - The Lomax Family

MANY thanks [for the] outstanding Disneyland Information Guide (D.I.G.). I've shared it with several colleagues, all of whom report back that theirs was the "Best visit to Disneyland, ever!" This time, I made up a shortened pocket-size print-out for my wife and found that it greatly improved our communication about what to see and when to see it. On the plane out to Orange County we shared an extra copy with strangers, then yesterday I passed on my copy to a new friend from Australia. Once again, Al, Thank You! - Steve

I just wanted you to know how valuable the Disneyland Information Guide was to my family and me this spring. We spent 2 and a half days at DL, March 30-April 1...right in the middle of spring break. By using the info from DIG, we were able to have an extremely enjoyable visit to the Magic Kingdom, and spent very little time in lines. - Rusty

I love the Disneyland Guide, thanks for the effort that goes into it. Your guide saved me money already - I discovered that I can get the equivalent of a Passport Plus at my hotel for *less* than if I buy it in advance through Disney! - Steve

Wow, what a resource on Disneyland. Thank you for all your time in providing this information for the rest of us. I'll download the text versions and print them before I go to the park next time. Thanks again. - Mike

Well, as you know I've always been a big fan on the D-I-G. There was nothing about it I would have changed - just perfect. But WOW! :) The HTML edition is even *cooler* than the old posts to the NG! You've actually outdone yourself, and I have to step up and say THANK-YOU one more time! <gush mode off> :) - Larissa

The new web page for DIG is just great. I'm going to use it as my home page at work. Why aren't you doing PR for Disney (for big bux!)???? You've generated at least two more trips to Disneyland from among my friends. One of whom's mom is dying of cancer and she and they are all planning to go within the next couple of months - it's a place they love with a lot of wonderful memories and they were unaware of the special services that you kindly outlined in the DIG, they will come in right handy. - Lucas

After viewing your page regarding DL for about 4 hours, I have developed a great appreciation for people like you. We, my Finance and I, share you sense of humor and really enjoyed reading everything. - Donna

Just popped in to take a look around your new HTML version of DIG. You have done a fine job. It looks great, is well organized, and contains eveything anyone would need to make a visit Disneyland. You should be very proud of this one ..... it is sure to be one busy site that anyone planning a trip to Disneyland should visit before heading to the happiest place on earth! - Gary

I cannot begin to express how much your DIG meant to us. It is the BEST -bar none- travel information guide I have ever read. You have really struck on a great recipe for a Disneyland guide. All of your insights on out-of-the-way nooks and crannies are exactly what I look for when planning a trip. - Abe

This is in response to your request for feedback on your FAQ/DL DIG guide. But first off, let me say it's a great source of information as is and kudos to you for doing such a great job with it! It sure must eat into a lot of your time, but it's well-appreciated. I usually want to read about what's new at the park, all the little details and things that keep changing. You do a good job of keeping up on that stuff, and it makes me feel like I've roamed around the park for a few minutes when I read your post. The style of writing is just fine, easy to read and understand... ...don't change the tone and quality of writing and information, But the bottom line is DON"T STOP DOING IT!!! :) It's a great little document, and the hard work really shows. - Sonia

I would like to thank you for the D-I-G I find it very informative and helpful. I like it being posted on the newsgroups because then I am able to read it off line.

There is also one other thing that I want to thank you for, My mother who is partially disabled, walks with a cane, went to Disneyland last Friday with us (we have AP) she didn't want to rent a wheelchair so we did without. Well at the end of the day she was in grave pain and since our present to her was surprising her with an AP I was concerned that she would have to rent a wheelchair all the time. Well since I read her the guide about getting a pass so that she won't have to stand in long lines she is much more anxious about going to Disneyland. I want to thank you for that, now maybe my Mom will go to Disneyland as much as she wants instead of when her leg feels good. - Dee

This is just a much belated thank you for producing the D-I-G. After not going to DL for 6-7 years, a pair of annual passes my fiancee gave me for my birthday has been remedying the situation. The D-I-G has been very, very, VERY helpful allowing us to see, do, and appreciate more at DL than ever before, and we'd like to thank you for it. - Joe

Let me say that the D-I-G gets more wonderful every time, and I always enjoy reading it. It's helpful, but also just plain fun. - Mary

I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that you have the best Disneyland page out there. I appreciate the regular updates on new rides, changes, etc... - Cris

Just utilized your Disneyland page. I am impressed and grateful. Your information is going to make my son's birthday trip so much better than if we just arrived cold. We are semi-regulars (every 2-three years) and have been for the past 19 years so we thought we pretty much knew the park---how wrong we were! Thanks again! - Mike

Its a great guide ... readable, and full of information. I printed out the last one I picked up at work, and several people who were planning trips to DL took a look at it and loved it. - Frank

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the DIG. It was so helpful and I can't wait until my next trip to DL to check out some of the stuff you wrote about. Keep up the good work! - Wendy

I really enjoyed D-I-G, and the amount of information available was incredible. - David

Excellent guide! We were up there yesterday. If I hadn't read your guide, we would have probably been stuck at Indy first thing. However, we took your advice and went to everything else first (no lines at all), and took Indy at around 2:30pm (1 hour wait). We got there about 7:30am (opened at 8), and before 10:30 we had been on Space Mountain, Star Tours, Splash Mountain, Pirates and Haunted Mansion. - Mike

I'm a big fan of your D-I-G. Thanks for your good work! I'm a project manager in Utah, and can only get to Disneyland about every 3 months. The D-I-G helps me get there mentally any time I want to. So, thanks! - Frank

I just wanted to thank you for all the great info! We had a great time at DL, was glad I had your insider info so I knew the little stuff (like the special effects while waiting to get on Indy)! Thanks again for all your help; I printed out portions of your advice and took it with us so we wouldn't miss anything!!!! You were a big help - TT

I saw your Disneyland Information Guide on the Web recently. I'm a California native, I have gone to Disneyland too many times to count (the first time I was three months old!), but your Guide is great! - Marie

I just read your latest D-I-G, and wanted to say thanks for compiling the info. I used to work at DL in 1983 as a casual / seasonal. Definitely the best place I ever worked Now I am living in Sidney, BC, on beautiful Vancouver Island. Your D-I-G and R.A.D. are the only way for me to keep up with my favorite place on earth. Keep up the good work!! - Ed

I just read your DIG and wanted to tell you how great it is! Thanks so much for so much info and for putting it on the WWW...I wish I'd had it before we made a trip earlier this year. Thanks again, I'll watch for updates before our next trip. - Susan

I've been meaning to say a simple "thanks" for all the *accurate* info on DL etc. that you provide to rad. I always route folks w/ questions to your DIG file and keep a printed copy in my car as a quick reference source. Great work! - Elizabeth

I just finished reading the DIG and it looks great. It's the best review of Disneyland I've seen - including many of the books I've read. Keep up the good work! - Rick

this is the first time i have been able to read you d-i-g, and i must say a huge THANK YOU for putting something like this out. as a former resident of ventura, i have fond memories of going to disneyland at least once a year. this is just an awesome info guide, and really puts the FAQ to shame. thanks again for fond memories. - Mark

Just read your DL Info Guide and had to tell you that it is well done. Our family was there the first week of April 95 and are hoping to return again in April 96. I'll be looking forward to all the *great* info that you put together to make the best trip ever. Thanks. - Pat

Your D-I-G is outstanding. We bought all of the standard Disneyland guides before I found the D-I-G on the web - we could have saved a lot of time and money if I had found your guide sooner. "Tips & Tricks" was especially useful. It helped make my family's first ever trip to Disneyland a wonderful experience. Thank you, and please keep up the good work. - Michael

I have said it before and I will say it again, THANK YOU for your great contributions to the Disney Newsgroups! I thoroughly enjoyed your Golden Horshoe comments and in my opinion you weren't rambling one bit. Personally, I was only able to see the "Jamboree" edition one time and I absolutely loved it. Thank you again! - Michael

As usual, thanks for the update. I've only managed to get to DL once, so far, but your detailed reports provoke both my memories of the last trip and dreams of the next. - Bill

I just finished reading your Disneyland Info Guide and just wanted to say: GREAT JOB!!! It is really a nice alternative to the commercial guides which, as you know, tend to be a little behind the times by the time they are a couple of months old. Our family (3 generations) are going to DL in February, and I am sure we will consult your guide from time to time for updates. Thanks again for the great guide and keep up the good work! - Mike

Wow. There I was, my very first time in the newsgroups (I'm learning this stuff painfully slowly...), and I notice something with the word DISNEY. "Hey!" I thought "I'm taking the family to DL in a few weeks for the very first time, let's take a look and see if there is anything worthwhile..." and then I found your article subj FAQ DL/ DL info guide (LONG). Talk about timing! Talk about helpful! Talk about grateful! You have done a very nice job, and I just wanted to let you know that your tips will be put to good use. - Pete

Just finished reading your DIG, and must offer my hearty congratulations! As a former CM, not to mention long-time Disneyana collector (40 years and counting), I really appreciate all of the time and effort it took to prepare the posting(s). ...all of the info is superb and a real help for those who are visiting the Park. Keep up the great work! - JJ

Thrill Seekers - Roller-coaster junkies can feed their need for speed on the internet - by Bernard J. Wolfson [excerpt]

This [site] is for the
unrepentant Disneyland fanatic in you. It's really several different sites under one umbrella, orchestrated by Webmaster Al Lutz.

Click on "DIG" and you get Lutz's frequently barbed musings on the goings-on inside the Magic Kingdom. He covers everything from the park's attractions, restaurants, merchandise and the quality of service to corporate politics inside the Walt Disney Co. headquarters.

Click on "Fabulous Disney Babe" and be treated to Michelle Smith's sardonic, insinuating chatter, which alternately nudges, coddles and slices the powers that be at Disneyland. Two other writers, Jim Hill and Sue Kruse, also contribute regularly, and there are links to a wealth of recent news articles on Disneyland.

If Lutz writes with an edge about the park he loves so much, it's only because he believes that visitors to his site are best served by his frankness. "I think people come to the site because they are looking for tips that will help them save money and time in their day," he says. "People want some honesty. If a new attraction isn't really worth much, they appreciate knowing it."

Looking for a comprehensive guide to the Happiest Place on Earth? This is it. Created by a veteran visitor to Disney's flagship theme park, this unofficial site is an exhaustive collection of park hours, admission prices, attraction closures, parade schedules, and tips for making the most of your day. Find out what's changed since your last visit and what's in store for the future. Best of all, the author digs deep beneath the Magic Kingdom to present revealing gossip from Disneyland "cast members" (employees).

Critiquing-and Enjoying-Disneyland

Every Sunday, Al Lutz drives over to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, to greet theme-park fans who have visited his Web site, the Disneyland Information Guide. Online and in person, people share their stories-and their gripes-about the park and its evolution.

"Disney has its own official site, [but] it really is just the equivalent of a glossy brochure," says Lutz. "The success of the D-I-G has proven there was a need for a more critical view of how to make the most out of visiting this place." The real-time meetings have produced two weddings, three kids, and a variety of relationships.
