Main Street Electrical Parade
at Walt Disney World!
by Karl Buiter
After over twenty years of
performances, The Main Street Electrical Parade departed Disneyland
forever in November of 1996. Many thought it would never be seen again.
Only a few short months
later, the Parade was trucked out of storage to New York for the opening
of Hercules. Like many, I watched TV that night to get glimpses of the
parade behind host segments. Again, as it paraded uptown in Manhattan,
its fate was uncertain.
Last year several of us made
a pilgrimage out to Walt Disney World. Beyond the adventure of exploring
entirely new parks, we met up with an old friend. Here is a photo essay
on a refurbished Main Street Electrical Parade as it appeared at Walt
Disney World in August of 1999.
The Blue Fairy
With the electronically
voiced words "Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls," we get
our first glimpse of the Blue Fairy. Traditionally leading the parade,
she looks as great as ever emerging from Main Street or entering
Frontierland.
The Steam Train and
Drumhead
A Steam Train led by Goofy
pulls the giant Drum announcing the name of the parade. High up on
the drum, Mickey and Minnie wave to the crowd.
At Walt Disney World, the
drumhead has one major change. It announces "The Magic Kingdom
Presents."
Alice in Wonderland
Giant Mushrooms, Lady Bugs,
Bumble Bees. This fantastical menagerie fills out the Alice in
Wonderland section.
Watch out! One of those
turtles may spin up and poke you in they nose!
SpectroMagic dragonflies
illuminate the way for the Mushroom and Butterfly. A giant caterpillar
follows behind.
Here we see one of the
SpectroMagic costumes lit up by a camera flash.
Dancing SpectroMagic
Butterflies mix with the Alice elements.
