Walt Disney World declared "StormReady" by NOAA
The Walt Disney World Resort has been declared to be the first theme park and resort in the nation to achieve "StormReady community" status by the NOAA National Weather Service. A total of more than 1,050 communities throughout the United States have achieved this designation.
The nationwide StormReady program, which began in 1999 with seven communities in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, uses a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle local severe weather and flooding threats. Program requirements include: establishing a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center; having more than one way to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings and to alert the public; create a system that monitors local weather conditions; promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars; and develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.
"We appreciate this acknowledgement of our continuous efforts to ensure the year-round safety of our guests and cast members," said Lee A. Cockerell, executive vice president of operations for Walt Disney World. "Our partnerships with local, state and federal emergency management agencies are part of our overall safety strategy that enables us to provide our guests with the highest level of security and comfort possible."
The StormReady recognition will be in effect for three years while the resort conducts the renewal process.
Gay Days conclude quietly
An estimated 140,000 gays and lesbians converged on the Orlando area last week for the "Sweet Sixteen" edition of Gay Days. The central event for the gathering was Saturday in the Magic Kingdom, when 60,000 participants in red shirts converged on the theme park. The gathering pumped an estimated $100 million into the local economy, and ended yesterday with no major incidents.
Shifting gears from spring to summer
Disney's big spring push is coming to an end as both Star Wars Weekends and the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival both wrap up this coming weekend. While the announcement of Star Wars Celebration IV (link) next Memorial Day weekend in Los Angeles has raised some concerns about Star Wars Weekends, we have heard nothing indicating that the popular event would not return next year. The Flower & Garden Festival should return as well. We'll report dates for the events as soon as they are released, but they should be pretty close to this year's dates.
However, Disney isn't quite ready to let go of holding daily concerts at the America Gardens Theater. On Monday, June 12, following the final Flower Power concert featuring Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone the day before, the inaugural Sounds Like Summer concert series will begin. For nine weeks, the theater will host a series of concerts by "tribute" bands (for those unfamiliar with "tribute" bands, these are bands that exclusively sing the songs of a famous artist or group, and are often named after one of the band's songs or other information about the band). Here is the lineup that we've seen:
- Transit Authority (Chicago), June 12 18
- Hotel California (Eagles), June 19 July 1
- 52nd Street (Billy Joel), July 2 14
- Draw The Line (Aerosmith), July 15 21
- Bjorn Again (ABBA), July 22 August 6
- Transit Authority (Chicago), August 7 13
However, we've also heard that Parrots of the Caribbean (a Jimmy Buffet tribute band) may replace Bjorn Again from July 31 through August 6.
Some Eat to the Beat concert dates leak out
Some concert dates for the Eat to the Beat concert series during this fall's Epcot International Food & Wine Festival have started to leak out. The dates to come out so far only cover 14 of the 45 days of the festival (which runs from September 29 through November 12), so there are 31 more days of concerts yet to be released. We'll let you know as we hear of them. This is what we have so far:
- Survivor, September 29 30
- Family Stone Experience, October 1 3
- Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas, October 4 7
- Three Dog Night, October 19 21
- Chubby Checker & The Wildcats, November 5 6
Bonnet Creek property to grow with two new Hilton resorts
That large parcel of property that Disney was never able to buy is pushing another thorn into Disney's side. The Bonnet Creek Resort482 acres bounded by I-4, Buena Vista Drive, the Caribbean Beach Resort and the Osceola Parkwaywill be the site of two new high-rise hotels slated to open in the summer of 2009.
Last Wednesday, Hilton Hotels Corporation announced plans to build a 1,000-room Hilton and a 500-room Waldorf-Astoria at the resort, co-owned by Brooksville Development Corp. and the estate of the late Taiwanese investor Ling Kai Kung. The two new resorts would join a 58-acre Fairfield Resorts timeshare property with 1,100 rooms on the site. Hilton hopes to break ground on the hotels by the end of the year.
A 115,000-square-foot conference facility, to be located between the hotels, will be shared by both in addition to having 25,000 (Hilton) and 11,000 (Waldorf) square feet of meeting space within the hotels themselves. The hotels will also share a 25,000 square foot spa and fitness center ant 5,000 square feet of specialty retail.
Both resorts will feature swimming pools overlooking the Bonnet Creek Resort's Rees Jones-designed golf course, which is expected to open before the hotels.
The Waldorf will include editions of many of the well-known restaurants and bars from the original in New York, such as Peacock Alley, the Bull & Bear, Sir Harry's Bar and Oscar's.
The resort is expected to max out at 2,400 hotel rooms and 1,600 time share units, which means that 900 hotel rooms and 500 time share units are yet to be spoken for.
While Disney does not own the Bonnet Creek Resort, the only way into and out of the resort is through Disney property. The access road to the property connects to Buena Vista Drive east of the Caribbean Beach Resort. Because the property is landlocked, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, Disney's governmental arm, which is responsible for public facilities on the property, must provide access and signage. However, since they're a governmental entity, they're not allowed to show favoritism toward one constituent over another. They have to provide equal access and equal signage. While they did make the Bonnet Creek signage a different color than the Disney signage, that's about the only differentiation that they could have made without jeopardizing their standing as a governmental body.
Stay Play and Dine booking window extended
While the Walt Disney World Web site does not reflect this at publication time, we have been informed that the booking window for the Stay Play and Dine free dining package (link) has been extended from yesterday to Sunday, June 25! Apparently, rooms are still not booking up at the rate expected for August 13 September 30. So if you were thinking about booking the plan and thought that you missed the cutoff yesterday, rejoice and make that call! Thanks to MousePlanet sponsor Small World Vacations for tipping us off.
Disney cook killed on way to work
Ronald "Gumby" Klaas, 51, who had worked in Walt Disney World's kitchens for the last decade, was shot and killed on his way to work last week. Klaas was homeless by choice and lived in a local shelter. He was assigned from a labor pool to work at Walt Disney World. Klaas was shot in the head and leg as he walked to the Lynx bus terminal before dawn last Sunday to catch a ride to work.
Police believe that his killer also wounded and robbed another man two blocks away before dawn that same morning. The assailant is believed to be around 17 years of age, 115 pounds, 5'6" tall and riding a blue child's bicycle. Klaas was approximately 5 feet tall and 120 pounds. The other victim was believed to be a transient. Both men would have had little money.
Quick takes
The calendar at the Walt Disney World Web site is currently showing Blizzard Beach closed at least through the end of the year. We'll have to wait to find out when they actually make the changeover between water parks this winter.
The Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge is now at 85 percent of capacity. Less than 450 spots are left. If you're looking to sign up, do it soon! Go to the race's Web site (link) for more information or to sign up. [Read our WDW Marathon Guide.]
From the "What the " Department comes an auction from MouseSurplus, where a life-size wax figure of Walt Disney is up for sale (link)..
Refurbishment of the Contemporary Resort's tower rooms has been completed. Work on the South Garden Wing continues, yet no work has yet been done on the North Garden Wing.
The Chakranadi Chicken Shop at Disney's Animal Kingdom has closed, and its location will be subsumed by the upcoming Asia table-service restaurant, scheduled to open next summer.

Perhaps the best-received package in recent Disney history, the "Stay, Play and Dine" free dining plan is back. Packages purchased by June 4 for stays from August 13 ? September 30 will receive the Disney Dining Plan for free. Essentially, it's the Magic Your Way Plus Dining package for the price of a standard Magic Your Way package. Add it up and a family of four with kids ages 3-9 will save $97.96 per night, and a family of four with kids over age 9 will save a whopping $151.96 per night.
Disney Visa cardholders can use request code YWL when booking, while the general public should use code YWX.
Limited Passholder and Florida resident discounts released for summer
Very limited discounts were released for Passholders and Florida residents last week. Rather than the all-resorts rates that we've seen in the past, the new rates are very specifically targeted to five resorts ? two Disney Vacation Club resorts and three deluxe resorts, indicating that bookings property-wide are up, with only these five resorts selling below the expected point, necessitating the issuing of discounts.
The released discounts are for July 5 through August 5 at the Old Key West Resort, Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, Yacht Club Resort, Beach Club Resort and BoardWalk Inn Resort. (The Beach Club Villas and BoardWalk Villas are not included in the discount.) Discount rates at the DVC resorts begin at $159 per night for a studio room, and rates at the deluxes start at $189 per night in a standard room. Other levels of accommodations at those resorts are also available at higher rates. A limited number of rooms are available at the discounted rates.
To receive the discount, you can either make your reservations through the Passholder or Florida resident Web sites, through travel agents or by calling the special Passholder or Florida resident phone numbers (available at the respective Web sites). Passholders should reference promotional code EZT or EZU, while Florida residents should reference promotional code EZW.
At check-in, Passholders will be required to show an annual pass or exchange voucher, and Florida residents will be required to show proof of Florida residency.
Cirque discounts for Passholders and DVC members
Passholders and DVC members get 25 percent off Category 2 admission to performances of Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba through September 30, 2006. Each passholder or DVC member can buy up to four tickets. Tickets should be purchased by phone at 407-939-7604 up to 30 days in advance, and must be picked up at the box office with valid Passholder or DVC identification. The offer is not valid on Saturday shows during July, and the show will not be performed on Sundays and Mondays, as well as July 30 ? August 1 and September 17?25.
Golf Price Slice returns
A round of golf at Walt Disney World will be less expensive after 10 a.m. again this summer as the resort is bringing back the Disney's Price Slice promotion. From May 22 through September 30, greens fees will be "sliced" to $55 for the Magnolia and Eagle Pines courses, $49 for the Palm course and $45 for the Lake Buena Vista course. The rates include the use of an electric cart and are discounted from the before-10 a.m. prices of $89 (Magnolia and Eagle Pines), $79 (Palm) and $69 (Lake Buena Vista). The Osprey Ridge course is not involved in the promotion, as it will be closed from May 15 through September 23 for refurbishment. The Tifdwarf grass on the greens is being replaced by TifEagle turf, tee boxes are being laser leveled and other work will also be done. The annual makeover of a selected course has been extremely well-received, with the Palm course going first in 2004 and the Magnolia getting upgraded last year. It is unknown at this time whether the Eagle Pines or Lake Buena Vista course is scheduled for next year. To reserve a tee time, call 407-WDW-GOLF (407-939-4653) or go to the Disney Golf Web site (link). Note that the site appears to have difficulty with browsers other than Internet Explorer.
