10/17/2003 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Due to a last minute cancellation by a friend, we had Priceline rooms reserved at the Hawthorn Suites Ltd. $31 per night and at the Crowne Plaza $42 per night.
Our original plan was to stay at the Hawthorn and eat the other room. The suites sounded like a better fit for our family of 4. I e-mailed the hotel to let them know that we would arrive between 8 and 10 pm so that they wouldn't give our room away. I also requested a King nonsmoking at the time. We arrived at about 9:30 on Friday night and all they had for NS was two double beds. We parked in the garage, which had some broken glass and alot of trash around, and went to the elevator to check our room out. The elevator ran slow and stopped between a couple of floors once. The hallways had a strange smell and the stairwells were very hot. There was quite a bit of rust on the overhead sprinklers.
Our room was at the end of the hall and it had two double beds in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room. The living room had a decent sized TV and the bedroom had a slightly smaller TV. The beds did not appear to be very comfortable and the room was pretty rundown. Not dirty, but at the same time, not quite clean. I know that's not very descriptive but it's the best I can come up with. The bathroom had what appeared to be the same type of rust or maybe it was mold around the wallpaper at the top of the shower.
Anyway, we decided that we would go check out the Crowne Plaza and decide if that would be a nicer stay. I would say that if the Hawthorn truly deserves 2.5* then the Crowne Plaza should get about 7*.
We went back to the Hawthorn on Sunday morning to try the free breakfast. It was okay with scrambled eggs, sausage, toast your own frozen waffles, bagels, bread and english muffins. They had a selection of cold cereal, soda, milk and variour juices. There was some pineapple and maybe some other fruit as well. The breakfast was packed and the room was hot and stuffy so we ate and left and did not return. I'm sure it is much more pleasant to get the food and return to your room.
The pool area is under the end of the building. It seemed to have a strange smell also, but we didn't get close enough to check out the water.
