(MAP - upper left of map, between the Disneyland Hotel and Indy ride building) The part of the Disneyland Resort expansion that delights the bean counters the most is this new mall. It's even been named after former Disneyland President Paul Pressler [Paul's Mall] by people in the company. He'd been quoted saying "he can get more money out of those tourists" with this, and the design, based somewhat on what Universal has done with City Walk [which Disney then expanded on for Walt Disney World] seems to prove it out. Don't expect anything unique or exciting here, and look for possible problems, especially on weekend nights, with teenagers - since the planned movie multiplex will probably pull in teens on date nights from all around the Anaheim / Garden Grove / Santa Ana area. Dining options will consist of such tired chain theme restaurants as House of Blues, and Rainforest Cafe. There will also probably be a McDonalds. Disney is mainly concerned here with the high percentages of their sales that they can extract here. Planet Hollywood was at one time on the list, but dropped off as its fortunes continue to wane. And of course there will be a huge ESPN Zone and a World of Disney outlet too. For more information about who else is now in the mall, read the announcements made 10/13/99 on the new PRESS RELEASE page. Other shops may include a major chain music store, Virgin has been mentioned, and lots of those trend / trinket / poster / t-shirt types of shops also. In other words the same old stuff you'll find at any southland mall nowadays. The entire area has been designed and placed so the majority of the hotel visitors to the two parks have to go through it. |
