What is your "Home Resort"?
Your "home resort" is the resort in which you have your
ownership interest. Currently there are four DVC resorts: Old Key
West Resort at Walt Disney World, the Boardwalk Villas Resort at Walt
Disney World, Disney's Vero Beach Resort, and Disney's Hilton Head
Island Resort.
The cost of points and the costs of maintenance varies from resort
to resort with the WDW resorts being somewhat more costly on both
counts. Of course, the atmosphere and location of each resort varies
widely, too.
The main advantage of owning in one over another is that you are
permitted, as a member, to make reservations at your home resort
up to eleven months in advance of your stay. You are allowed to
make reservations at the other DVC resorts only seven months in
advance.
This is not a big deal if you plan on using your points mostly
at your home resort, but if you plan to move around...be aware of
the issue. Those members that own at Hilton Head and Vero Beach,
and plan to visit the WDW resorts during the busiest times of the
year (high summer and Christmas) might find reservations hard to
come by.
Another important fact regarding the home resort is that any timeshare
swaps done through Intervals International are made to and from
your home resort. I suspect that it will prove to be easier to exchange
a week's stay at OKWR or BSR for a Skiing vacation in Colorado than
it would be to make the same exchange to Hilton Head or Vero Beach.
