Benjamin Geiger -- March 2001 -- Walt Disney World (Resort)

11 March 2001

Hi everyone.

To celebrate my 19th birthday, I went to WDW on Sunday. (My b-day is today (Monday), but school and Disney don't easily mix.) I took one of my friends, Erica.

We started at Epcot. Of course, living up to my TDC title, our first stop was Ice Station Cool. I gave her a cup of Beverly... she didn't like it. In fact, she didn't try any of the others, even though I tried to convince her to, for fear that they were "all that bad". Oh well, her loss.

Next stop was Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. There was almost no line. I loved the show, as usual, but Erica said it made her eyes hurt.

After that, we went to the Land. I finally went on Living with the Land, something that I had never done in the many years I've been going to Epcot. I found it interesting, but my younger companion looked bored out of her skull. We beat a hasty retreat after that.

I guess that was enough for Erica, as she suggested we head over to the Magic Kingdom. We even got to sit up front on the Epcot monorail. I asked the driver how many times you had to hear "Por favor, manténganse alejado de las puertas" before you started repeating it in your sleep. He just laughed and said he didn't even pay attention to it anymore.

It was my bright idea to take the ferryboat instead of the MK monorail. It's not as much the time spent that bothers me, as it is 'time just sitting there'. We stood on the ferryboat for about 10 minutes.

Once on Main St., we stopped at the candy store. We both got Wonka bars (I'd recommend them... chocolate with graham crackers... they're delicious). Then, it was off to Alien Encounter.

Neither of us were really scared by the ride, as we had both been on it before. I turned my collar up to cover my neck, though, as the 'wet-tongue-on-the-neck' is kinda nasty.

A short hike later, we were riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. A quick suggestion to those of narrow stature: Don't ride with someone as large as I am (5'8", 270 lb). Erica kept flying up from her seat and hitting the lap bar.

- From there, we went to the Haunted Mansion. The sign said 35 minutes, but we walked right in. I guess Disney doesn't update its wait time signs very often. Fun ride, but we had GREAT CMs! They certainly filled their roles well; I was startled twice by one guy in a vampire costume.

After our escape, we tried to grab a seat for the MSEP. Or at least we tried. By the time we got out, almost all seats were taken. We ended up sitting on the steps of the Diamond Horseshoe. The parade itself was wonderful.... I'm still humming the theme. (I'm also humming the theme to "it's a small world", even though I didn't even ride it!)

Since we had to go back to Epcot anyway, since I parked there, I suggested we go see Illuminations: RoE. We thought we had to hurry, because I thought the show started at 8:30. So, we got back quick.

I'll skip the explanation of how we got from the Kingdom to the TTC so fast. I'm sure you can figure it out for yourselves. (And if not, so much the better. ;-)

We walked in right as the show was about to start. As opposed to NYE, I was actually able to see the lagoon and the "Earth-globe". I didn't realize how strong the fire was at the beginning of the show... I had to shield my eyes, and I could actually feel the heat of the flames.

Everything else about the show was great. We could feel the explosions of the fireworks, even.

And I'll admit, even the big tough guy I am, that the final song brought a tear to my eye. :-) The final thousand flares are a moving sight, too.

From there, it was just a short stampede ;-) back to the trams.

As we left, though, a Disney bus blocked my exit, so we ended up on I-4. During "Disney traffic" (translation: gridlock). Luckily, we only had to go one exit's distance, and there were two courteous drivers who let me in. Whoever you are, thanks. (I was in the blue Saturn station wagon.)

We made it home intact. I dropped Erica off at her house and went home to go to bed.
