Sue Holland -- January 2006 - Walt Disney World (ASSR)

Note: As Sue spent time at Pleasure Island and in other adult venues on this trip, this report has some information that may not be appropriate for young readers.

Who/When/Where:

Who:

  • Sue (me - 45), DVC member

Dates: January 26 & 29, 2006
Travel Method: Personal car
Resort: All Star Sports Resort

INTRODUCTION:
I didn’t have another WDW trip scheduled until early February, but once again circumstances caused my plans to change.  SB & I were just here a couple of weeks ago, spending a few nights at Old Key West and then the 4-night Wonder cruise.  He would be out of town the next 2 weekends, and after spending the first one at home alone I decided I might as well spend the second one at WDW.  I started checking into it on Monday, for a Friday arrival.  Unfortunately, DVC had no studios available at any of the resorts for this weekend, even though it’s a “slow” time of year and points are highest on the weekend nights.  I could have taken a 1-bedroom villa at Saratoga Springs, but 82 points for 2 nights on a solo trip just seems too wasteful to me!  That’s $882 worth of points (on the rental market), and I didn’t want to be there badly enough to spend that!  On a whim I checked the Disney website looking for a cash reservation at a value resort, and found as a Florida Resident I could get the 2 nights for under $145 total.  Later that evening (Monday) I checked it again, but as a passholder – and the $49 rate came up at All Star Sports!  I decided for that price it made no sense to stay home, so I booked the weekend for just over $110 total.  I have a 12:30 dental appointment Friday and won’t be returning to work after that, so I’ll get on the road early enough to arrive in time to get settled and perhaps do a few things before meeting Leesa at Comedy Warehouse.  SB was happy I found a room, but bummed he wouldn’t be there – I’ll miss him but will enjoy having another solo trip.

I wasn’t going to make any dining reservations, since I wasn’t sure where I’ll head each day.  I booked LeCellier for the February trip, and will actually eat there 2 weekends in a row, so I’m not going to eat there this trip.  There’s a menu item at Tony’s in the MK that looks interesting, and Tuesday night I decided to book lunch there for Saturday and just plan to make that a Magic Kingdom morning.  I discovered my Disney Dining Experience card had expired (nobody noticed it earlier this month when we were there) so I called to get that renewed.  They’re leaving me a temporary card at Epcot Guest Services, and will mail the permanent card to the house.

I do plan one evening at Comedy Warehouse, although most likely it’ll just be the first couple of shows.  Staying later than that gets me back to the resort pretty late, and SB & I don’t go to sleep without chatting online or on the phone at the end of the day – haven’t missed a single day since we met a year and a half ago.  The other evening I plan to spend in a park, enjoying the atmosphere after dark unless it’s too crowded.  I always have the option of adding a Comedy Warehouse show if the parks are bad, but hopefully it won’t be terribly crowded.  Expedition Everest is doing its preview for DVC members and passholders, but I doubt I’m brave enough for that.  I won’t do Splash Mountain because of the big drop, and consider Space Mountain & Big Thunder to be my limit as far as “thrill” rides!

Mostly it’s just a weekend to get out of the house and kill some time, and whatever I don’t get to do this time I can do when I return for a day next weekend and 3 nights the following weekend.

The current plans (subject to change) so far...

Fri 1/27:  Work, Dentist, Drive to WDW, Check in ASSp, Epcot?, Comedy Warehouse

Sat 1/28:  Magic Kingdom, Lunch at Tony’s Town Square, AK, Epcot

Sun 1/29:  MK or Epcot, Drive home

DAY 1 FRIDAY JANUARY 27, 2006:

Who: Sue (47), DVC Member
Leesa, Comedy Warehouse Regular

Plan: Work, Dentist, Drive to WDW, Check in ASSp, Epcot?, Comedy Warehouse

Actual: It was a short work day (left at 11:45), the dental appointment went as expected, and I was on the road by 1:15. I expected the worst, as traffic gets really bad in Florida during the winter season, but I didn’t hit any traffic at all until just a few miles outside of Disney (where 3 lanes were merged into 2). I made a quick stop at a McDonald’s drive-thru around 3pm since I missed lunch and the half bagel I’d eaten for breakfast just wasn’t enough! I got a cheeseburger – not exactly gourmet and not exactly healthy, but it was fast and only $1.06. It also wasn’t very good, but it served it’s purpose.

I arrived at All Star Sports shortly after 4 and was very pleased (& surprised) to find almost no wait at all to check in. The cm who checked me in said Florida residents live at this resort (due to some great rates), and I bit my tongue to keep from saying I was only here because my beautiful DVC resorts were all full . I was given a room in the Center Court, which is the tennis section. The parking area is a very long drive from the main building, but my building is actually a very short walk back to the main building – go figure. It’s the first time I’ve ever stayed in this section, but I have been in all of the others. I guess now my All Star Sports life is complete! I went to the room and brought my stuff inside. Since it’s such a short trip I really don’t have much, so it was pretty easy to get settled in no time at all. I’ve been having trouble with the laptop, so if I disappear just assume it was the laptop that died – not me! I’ve been putting off bringing it in, knowing it’ll be gone for 3 weeks and I don’t want to be without it! I had a HELL of a time getting it to stay on (the hole in the back where you plug the cord for a/c power seems to be broken again, as it keeps flipping back to running off the battery rather than using electricity). After many many tries and a lot of swearing on my part it finally seemed to hold the connection. I left the room, hoping for the best.

I walked to the bus stop and waited for the next Epcot bus. There was one there when I arrived, but it was full and had to leave about 12-15 people ahead of me (and me too) at the bus stop. When the next one came, it was also full. Some people got off, most of us got on, then we headed to All Star Music. There they had an even bigger crowd waiting – most of them were left behind. Our final stop was All Star Movies, which had the biggest crowd of all – very few of them got on the bus. Part of the problem is people don’t move to the back and fill in all the space like they’re supposed to. Also, tonight is extra magic hours in the evening at Epcot (open til midnight) so I think that’s causing all the extra traffic to this park.

At Epcot I went to Guest Relations to pick up my temporary Disney Dining Experience card. I had to wait in line, but luckily everyone ahead of me was really quick once they were at the window. I thought about going into Epcot, but with all the resort guests waiting to get in I decided it wasn’t worth it today. I went back to the bus stop and got on the waiting All Star bus, and this one was not even half full.

Back at All Star Sports I wandered through the shop but didn’t see anything of interest. I stopped in the food court and bought an oatmeal raisin cookie to snack on later, since they would probably be closed by the time I got back tonight. When I returned to the room I saw the laptop connection had failed and it had shut itself down to save the battery life. After several more attempts and quite a bit more swearing, I finally got a connection that might actually hold (wrapping the cord under the laptop to create the right tension at the exact angle it seems to need right now). I got online to read any email and let SB know what was going on with the laptop.

The room is in good shape – everything looks as it should, and appears to be functioning. It’s just such a letdown after staying in the DVC resorts, but for $49 I can’t find any fault with it. It wouldn’t be my first pick for a nice vacation, but when it’s just me and the trip is thrown together 4 days in advance and my usual places are all booked – the All Star Sports looks pretty darn good! My “view” is the tennis court between the 2 buildings, which is cute and so far has been quiet (no hordes of kids playing like on the football field). The only noise so far is the symphony of turbo toilets flushing every now & then!

Around 6:30 I drove over to Downtown Disney and struggled to find a parking space in my usual lot! After circling twice I gave up and found a spot in the next lot. This is supposed to be the slow season, and it’s early, so I don’t understand why it was so hard to find a parking space! I was getting hungry again, so I walked over to Wolfgang Puck’s Express at the Marketplace to get a bowl of the chicken tortilla soup. I noticed outside World of Disney they had a tent set up and were calling it the Princess Shop. At Puck’s I was dismayed to find the line completely packed inside the building and extending outside to the menu as you approach! I got in line, thinking perhaps it would move quickly, but then I noticed all of the tables were taken so I decided it wasn’t worth the wait if I might have to eat my soup standing up somewhere. I stopped in Ghiradelli but they weren’t giving out chocolate samples and I still had enough in my office from my last purchase. World of Disney was pretty busy, and some of the rooms are closed off. I’m not sure if they’re just refurbishing them or making them different. The kids room is one that was closed, which probably explains the Princess shop out in the tent.

Still seeking something to eat I walked over to the West Side, and noticed a huge line outside the Adventurer’s Club in Pleasure Island as I walked by. At the West Side I thought about the Bongos counter service window, but there was a line and I just refuse to stand in line to buy food (so instead I’ll stay hungry – I know, it makes no sense, lol). Puck’s here only has the butternut squash soup, which I don’t like. I even checked the candy store but wasn’t in the mood for chocolate for dinner (damn – did I just type that???) so I headed back to Pleasure Island. I got my wristband at Adventurer’s Club and sat in there for a few minutes, then wandered around outside until it was time to get to the back door.

Christine’s parents were there, and I hadn’t seen them for a while so we had a nice time chatting. Leesa arrived just before the door opened, and we all headed inside. Carol Stein was on the keys tonight, and did her usual excellent job. The 8:00 cast was Christine, John, Mark L, Mark, and Lisa. Mark L used to be in the cast full-time years ago, works as a sub now, has done many television commercials, and is a white guy. Mark is a tall slender black man who has worked as a sub for the past 2 years or so. In this report I’ll use Mark L and Mark to distinguish between the 2 men (not sure who the genius is who scheduled them both for the same night ).

Christine got a really sweet elderly lady on the phone, and they did a great opening song about her and her party of 23 people (grand niece was getting married at the Boardwalk tomorrow). Next they did Fill in the Blank using 2 volunteers from the audience. I swear I’ve never seen people heading for the stage move so slowly! The guy in particular was like a zombie, strolling along as if they didn’t have a show to do or anything, lol! Mark L and John were brothers – John a barber and Mark L a dentist. John was in the dental office with some teeth problems, and learned Mark L was in debt from buying drugs. It was a funny scene. They also did Up Your Alley with the subject of kindergarten teachers. John was the host “Baldy”. Christine was Laura, a retired lady who decided to start a new career as a kindergarten teacher (Laura was the elderly lady on the phone earlier). Lisa was a squirmy 5-year old named Emily. Mark was Randy, a professional hunter who believes kids don’t need to be in school because they can learn all they need to know out in the woods killing animals. Overall the show was very good – they had some minor mistakes but they were funny mistakes. There were some technical problems with a couple of microphones, but that was no big deal either. After the show I visited with everyone for a little while, catching up with them. It felt good to be back!

The 9:05 cast was Lisa, Matt, Mark, Mark L and John. John led the audience in creating a 1-Act Play, which was set in a gym. Mark was a boxer and Matt was his trainer. Mark realized he didn’t like getting hit, but Matt wanted him to keep boxing because he (Matt) was attracted to Mark’s girlfriend (Lisa). Matt ended up giving Mark poisoned koolade that caused him to go blind before dropping dead.

Mark L came out next and asked for a saying. He then created a rap song called “It’s Break Time” and did a good job with it. Mark and John came out break dancing in the background. They did Should Have Said, with Matt ringing the bell. John was a sheep shearer on Brokeback Mountain Ranch. Mark came in as another gay guy – they’d met online and Mark was here to make a “connection”. It was another really good show – but it was time for me to leave after this one. Leesa was staying for the rest of the night, but I need to be up early wanted to say goodnight to SB.

I drove back to All Star Sports, surprised at the traffic on the roads inside WDW during this slow season! Back in the room I was thrilled to find the laptop connection still holding! I started work on the report until SB came online. As expected, he was exhausted – he’d called me at 6:30 this morning when he was out, and normally he’d be asleep until 9. After we were done I finished up the report, watched the local news to check tomorrow’s weather, and ate part of the cookie. Oh – I did end up getting something for dinner – a kahlua and cream drink at the Comedy Warehouse. I couldn’t believe it was $7.25 (plus tip) for a little drink!! It did taste great, though!

Except for the computer frustration today was a really nice day. I’m actually quite content at the All Star Sports, despite my disparaging comments. Larry in Scotland wouldn’t recognize me if I had anything nice to say about the place, lol! Comedy Warehouse was terrific – great shows, and just a pleasure being there and seeing everyone again.

DAY 2  SATURDAY JANUARY 28, 2006:

Who:  Sue (47), DVC Member

Plan:     Magic Kingdom, Lunch at Tony’s Town Square, AK, Epcot

Actual:    I’d set the alarm for 6:45, and got up then.  After showering I had my usual Disney breakfast – cappuccino and biscotti.  There are not coffee makers at this resort, so I’d brought my hot pot from home.  It’s been so long since I had to use it, I had forgotten how – but after I noticed the water wasn’t heating at all I figured it out.  Yesterday I’d printed Steve Russo’s latest trip report from RADP and tucked all 27 pages into my backpack.  I always enjoy his reports, and figured it’d make great reading while I was having lunch at Tony’s Town Square later.  I left the room just before 8:30 to head for the bus stop to catch the bus to the Magic Kingdom.

There was a fairly decent wait for the bus, but since I was towards the front of the line I at least got a seat.  The bus went directly to the Magic Kingdom without stopping at the other resorts.  We arrived just as the pre-show on the train station was ending, and it was a breeze getting through the security check.  By the time I walked to the end of Main Street they had dropped the ropes into the “lands”.  I headed directly to Space Mountain and picked up a fastpass with a return time of 10:05-11:05, then walked right onto the ride through the standby entrance.  This was the fastest I’d ever gotten on!  I was off the attraction by 9:12, which is pretty damn good!  I walked through Fantasyland, stopping to walk onto the Pooh ride and had a short wait for Peter Pan’s Flight.  I’d finished both by shortly after 9:30.  Next I walked over to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which had a 20 minute wait posted.  I hoped it wouldn’t be that long, and I think was actually closer to 10-15 minutes.  It seemed lots of people had headed over from Splash Mountain, as I was just about the only person in line who wasn’t very damp!  It was a great ride, as always.  I noticed the log cabin on Tom Sawyer’s Island wasn’t burning.  It only took 34 years or so for the fire department to put it out, lol!

I walked over to Adventureland and had my own private boat in Pirates of the Caribbean.  It seems the boats move slower when they’re empty, as my boat kept hitting the empty one in front of it, right from the start and throughout the ride.  Once I finished on Pirates I returned to Big Thunder and picked up a fastpass with a return time of 10:50-11:50.  Reversing direction, I went over to Haunted Mansion and walked right in.  I’m still amazed Disney had this technology back in the early 70’s!  I walked back through Fantasyland and was shocked to see a very long line at Small World – what’s up with that???  I took a detour into Mickey’s Toontown (is that still what it’s called?) and got in line for the Barnstormer.  It had a 10 minute wait, and it’s about a 10 second ride <g>.  Oh well, live and learn!  From there I walked along the back path to Space Mountain, and used my fastpass for another trip to outer space.  I missed SB’s call while I was in there, but will hear from him later.

Next was a relaxing ride on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (with a WAIT – this makes no sense during slow season) before returning to Frontierland for my last ride on Big Thunder.  By now it was time to head to Tony’s for lunch, so I walked quickly down Main Street and checked in at the stand inside the restaurant.  I was seated within a few minutes, and thought the restaurant was very attractive.  I ordered the grilled vegetable panini, which is described as having mozzarella, tomatoes, and balsamic glaze on grilled multi grain bread.  That’s what I expected, but it’s not what came.  The menu failed to mention the other stuff in there – various vegetables which were not all identifiable to me.  The mozzarella portion was tiny, too.  I picked out most of the extra vegetables, and ate the portion of the sandwich that held the mozzarella & tomato.  A small side salad was on the plate, but it wasn’t anything special.  I’m sure if you like more vegetables (including what might have been a slice of Portobello mushroom) you’d love this panini, but it isn’t something I’d order again.  I read part of Steve’s report while I was in there, and I was out of there about 30 minutes after arriving.  Since it’s the Magic Kingdom, I drank water – no lingering over a glass of wine here!

I decided it was time to head to Epcot to see about a fastpass for Soarin’.  I figured if I waited until later they’d be gone.  I did screw up – I was waiting in the resort monorail station thinking I was at the express one.  After noticing 3 monorails came to the other side I realized that didn’t make any sense, and I realized I was on the resort loop.  I walked back down, had to go through security again, and boarded an express monorail – still before the next resort monorail arrived!  At the TTC it was an easy transfer to a waiting Epcot monorail, and I was on my way.

I decided to skip Spaceship Earth despite a really short line, and headed directly to the Land.  I got my fastpass with a return time of 4:36-5:36.  The standby wait was 60 minutes, which by Soarin’ standards is not that bad, lol!  The cast member assured me my fastpass would be honored even if I arrived after my window had closed.  From there I headed out to World Showcase to Germany to get a glass of wine.  I ordered a nice Riesling and sat on a bench facing the water and enjoyed my wine while reading more of Steve’s report.  It was a very pleasant afternoon!  Eventually I got up to exit the park and ran into my friends Tom & Leanne (with granddaughter Sydney) in China.  I’d planned to call them to arrange to meet tomorrow, but instead took care of that in person.  We chatted for a while, Sydney showed me the mask she was making at the KidCot stations (she’s 5), we set a meeting time/place for tomorrow, then parted company.

I exited Epcot and had what I thought was a very long wait for the bus, considering they need to serve 6,000 rooms of guests.  The bus was only half full though, so what do I know??  I walked back to the room and updated the report, talked to SB, and chilled out for a while.  Since I’m meeting Tom’s family at AK in the morning (I did all I need to do at MK this morning and will definitely do Soarin’ tonight) I decided to skip that park today.

Around 3:45 or so I was going to walk to the bus stop, but then decided to just drive my car.  I drove over and parked at the Boardwalk, planning to end the day by picking up another oatmeal raisin cookie before I returned to All Star Sports (the one from yesterday was almost gone).  Plus, it’s a beautiful day for walking!  They had a sign out on the road saying parking was only for guests registered at the Boardwalk and valet parking.  I continued to the self parking lot, which was further down the road and across the street from the convention center (this is where the cast parks).  It felt like I was miles away, but I left my car at 4:04 pm and was at the International Gateway by 4:14!  The security check was quick, but the turnstiles were excruciatingly slow here.  They needed to have more open, and some of the guests were pretty clueless about how to enter (hard to believe, unless it was their first ever entrance to a Disney park).

I decided to ride Spaceship Earth first, and walked right on.  Pretty soon SB called (couldn’t hear the ring but saw his name illuminate on the screen) and I spent about half the ride leaning over into the space where your feet go so I could talk to him.  It was far enough from the speakers in the headrest that we could actually have a conversation, and there’s no way anyone else on the ride could have heard me talking.  They may have wondered where I disappeared to, though <g>.  When I got off the ride I walked over to the Land to use my Soarin’ fastpass.  I noticed the fastpass return time for Living With the Land was just about 30 minutes from now, so I picked up a fastpass there.  The standby time was also 30 minutes, so I didn’t understand why people were standing in line (unless they were ALL unable to get a fastpass because they’d recently gotten one – not much chance of that being the case).  I looked through the Seasons food court offerings, and was fairly impressed.  They had cream of chicken soup, which I love – but I wasn’t hungry.

I headed over to Soarin’ (about halfway through my fastpass window) and began the long trek.  I really do love this attraction, but the wait is so long even with fastpass.  If there was a way to keep moving it wouldn’t seem so bad, but I think there’s only 2 theaters and you basically stand still for quite a while.  The standby time was 90 minutes at this point, and I ended up waiting somewhere around 10-15 minutes.  When I got out I had only 10 minutes until my fastpass was good at Living with the Land so I sat at an empty table and read more of Steve’s trip report until it was time to get in line.  Fastpass works really well here – the only wait was for the boat to move up from the loading area.

After leaving the Land I decided to ride Spaceship Earth again since I’d missed so much of it.  It was still basically a walk on, and except for a brief stop near the end the ride was very nice.  Test Track was closed for refurbishment, so I decided it was time to head for World Showcase.  I would have ridden the Maelstrom in Norway, but the line was out the door and it’s not worth that sort of wait to me.  In China the Chinese acrobats were performing, so I stopped to watch their awesome show.  Boy, it would be great to be able to do the things they do – but their average age was probably 12, lol!

The sun had set, and the lights reflecting on the water were just beautiful – it’s so nice being around World Showcase at night (especially early evening).  In Germany I got another glass of the wine I’d enjoyed earlier this afternoon, and found an empty bench facing the water.  I must have been in or really close to a smoking area because although I didn’t see any smokers I could smell them – it stunk.  I couldn’t stay there, so I moved to another bench further down.  Surprisingly, a couple was smoking along the railing not far from me but I couldn’t smell their smoke at all.  I sat a while, then strolled for a while.  I thought about getting something sweet to eat, but nothing really appealed very much.  Even the chocolate mousse in Italy I passed over – as I recall from last time, it was good but not spectacular.

Eventually I decided to return to the resort and spend some time with SB online.  I stopped at the Boardwalk Bakery, but nothing looked good to me.  I did the same at the candy store there, but also didn’t buy anything.  While I was in there, someone said “Hi Sue” and touched my arm – it was David, who used to be the manager at Comedy Warehouse.  I’d heard he was a manager somewhere at the Boardwalk, and this is it!  We chatted briefly, then I returned to the car and drove back to All Star Sports.  I walked over to the food court and got another oatmeal raisin cookie (it’ll probably go home with me), then went to the room.  I finished up the report, finished yesterday’s cookie, talked to SB and just relaxed the rest of the evening – planning on getting to bed relatively early.

Today was a really nice day.  Tony’s Town Square was probably the low spot, and after 2 attempts several years apart I don’t feel the need to make a 3rd visit.  I’m sure others have a better experience, but it’s just not a place I’d choose – especially when there are so many other places here that I really love!  I got a lot done at Magic Kingdom, hit the highlights at Epcot, and was glad to run into Tom & Leanne today.  Tomorrow will be a half-day at best, and I will get to see Expedition Everest (probably just from the outside, lol).  Tomorrow’s report will get posted after I return home.

DAY 3  SUNDAY JANUARY 29, 2006:

Who:  Sue (47), DVC Member

Tom (50’s) & Leanne (39 forever), DVC Members

Sydney (5), T&L’s granddaughter

Plan:    MK or Epcot (changed plan to Animal Kingdom), Drive home

Actual:  Yesterday I decided to take my car this morning instead of relying on Disney transportation, so I moved the alarm time back to 7:15.  It’s only 30 minutes, but I figure I might as well try to spend it sleeping instead of waiting for a bus.  I had some cappuccino and biscotti for breakfast, then packed up the rest of my stuff and was out the door by 8:30.  Overall I was quite pleased with my All Star Sports stay, and while I’d never choose it over a DVC resort I would be willing to stay here again if the price was right and this was the only thing available.  If I was not a DVC member, I’d certainly stay here a lot more often!  One thing I did notice, and I checked with Leanne to see if it was just my imagination.  The towels here are completely different from the towels at the DVC resorts.  Here they’re smaller, and so thin – more like I’d expect at a Motel 6 type of hotel.  Leanne confirmed that it wasn’t my imagination – there’s a huge difference in towel quality.  One thing that really impressed me at All Star Sports is when I requested no housekeeping service yesterday they left a bag of clean towels hanging on my door, and left a message telling me they’d done that and to please call them if there’s anything else I need.  I thought that was a terrific service!

I drove over to Animal Kingdom, and ended up being parked in the Peacock section.  Since it’s so far and it was close to my meeting time I took the tram.  The entrance to the security checks was absolutely mobbed – I’d never seen it like this, even during a busy season!  A whole new section opened up, and people (including me) swarmed over there to get in those new lines.  Once we got past security it wasn’t bad at the turnstiles.  I met Tom, Leanne, and Sydney, then we entered the park together.  Sydney was very proud to show me her autograph book, which had several autographs in there and a spot for a photo on each page (once Leanne has the prints developed).  It was obvious it was a prized possession for this particular 5-year old!

Upon entering the park just about everyone was heading right – towards Expedition Everest.  We didn’t realize they were doing fastpasses, so we figured we’d let the initial crowd get through there and we’d do the safari first.  It was amazing to walk back to Harambe and see so few people along the way, lol!  The standby time said 5 minutes or so, and we walked directly onto a waiting jeep – we’d never experienced that before!  The safari was excellent – probably the best one any of us had ever been on.  The driver/guide did a fantastic job, and shared lots of animal knowledge in addition to the hokey script.  I think we saw every single animal, with many of them right along the side of the road.  We saw the new baby elephant who’d been born just before Christmas – they sure move faster when they’re little and lighter!  We saw 5 cheetahs, and a couple of them were walking back & forth.  Both lions were out, and the male stood up, yawned, stretched, and then relieved himself!  Our guide was saying how lucky we were he was walking around, and then he did his business as we were admiring him.  Her only comment then was “oh, how nice”.

After the safari we stopped for Sydney’s autograph/photo opportunity with King Louie and some blue bear (baloo maybe??), then we headed for Expedition Everest.  Eventually we could see it off in the distance, and couldn’t believe the massive crowds there.  We had to enter from the Dinoland entrance, where our identification was checked (AP or DVC card plus a photo ID to prove you’re that person).  We were let in, and saw they were issuing fastpasses, but the return time (it was now 10am) was 2-3pm.  None of us were going to be here that late, so they decided to get in the 75-minute standby line.  That line was huge – extended way outside the attraction, so I found it hard to believe such a major attraction would have such a mob outside if the wait was only 75 minutes (based on Soarin’ having a 90 minute wait and the inside queue is only half filled).  I said my goodbyes to the others, as I knew there’s no way I could ride Expedition Everest if I had 75 minutes to think about my impending doom.  I know I can’t hide the attraction from SB forever, so I might end up on it at some point – something I do NOT look forward to, lol!

I walked back to Dinoland and checked out Primeval Hurl (oops – I meant Whirl).  The standby time said only 10 minutes, but I knew from experience the line I saw there would be at least twice that so I passed.  Dinosaur on the other hand had a 20-minute wait posted and I walked directly into the pre-show without seeing another person until I got into that room!  They had both sides operating, but quite often a vehicle went out with empty seats because they weren’t that crowded.

At this point I decided I might as well leave the park, so I headed for the exit.  There were still lots of people coming in – long lines at the entrance.  I rode the tram back to the car, then drove over to the Marketplace in Downtown Disney.  It was almost 11:00 and the parking lots were busy.  I found the last space in the lot down by the toy store, and walked over to Earl of Sandwich.  There was a line, but I knew it would move fairly well since it wasn’t packed tightly.  I ordered a caprese sandwich and at it at a table outside.  Now THAT’s what a mozzarella & tomato sandwich is supposed to be, lol!  Tony needs to come work here for a few days!  When I finished I got the car and drove home – an easy drive with little traffic except for a brief slowdown to allow for a truck that was towing a small airplane on the highway!  That was a first for me!

SUMMARY:

This was a really nice little trip, and I’m glad I was able to spend the weekend here.  It may sound like I’m disparaging the All Star Resorts, but honestly they deliver what they’re supposed to and it met my needs/expectations.  We don’t eat filet mignon every day – sometimes just a burger is all you want.  The All Stars are good, basic lodging – nothing fancy, no frills or amenities, but still very acceptable provided that’s what you’re looking for.

The parks were great, crowds were light, but I still haven’t figured out why 2 attractions that rarely have lines (Small World and TTA) had them when most other stuff was a walk-on yesterday!  The weather was ideal for touring the parks, but cool enough that I left the swimsuit at home!  Comedy Warehouse was also a great time – I only saw 2 shows, but they were both really good.

Tony’s was probably the only disappointment of the trip, but since I go to WDW fairly often I do expect that once in a while something is not going to be as I’d hoped it would be.  I really do think it’s a lovely restaurant, but until the menu changes I doubt I’ll be back.  I also don’t like the no-alcohol policy as it would have been nice to enjoy a glass of wine with my lunch.  Guess I’ll stick with eating outside of the MK!

I’ll be back for the day next Saturday, but won’t be writing a report.  I’ll wander around Epcot, have lunch at LeCellier with Pete & Judy – there, that’s the report <g>.  I then return for 3 nights on Friday February 3rd, staying at Villas at Wilderness Lodge.  It’s been about a year since I stayed there, and in 2006 I’ll be staying in every DVC resort except Vero Beach (booked VWL over the resorts I usually pick to help achieve that).

Until next time, thanks for reading!
