Comments: Cathy's report covers a big family trip to WDW. In addition to Cathy and her husband and sons, Cathy's sister and her kids, and Cathy's mom all joined the caravan to the All Star Music Resort. This is a particularly interesting report if you're planning a trip with a large, diverse group of people.

Trip Report - June 14-21, 1997

Travelers:

There were eight of us. My name is Cathy Bock and going on this trip were my husband Bryant, our sons Andy (15) and Stephen (9); my mother Lunell, my sister Janet, and her son Zachary (6) and stepson Daniel (16). All of us had been before except Zachary.

Background:

Sitting around Mom's table in August 1996, Janet said she wanted to take Zachary and Daniel to WDW. Good sister that I am, I offered to take Andy and Stephen along and we twisted Mom's arm for oh, about 10 seconds and that was that! Bryant didn't decide to join us until he and I went in December for my birthday. We decided to stay at one of the All-Stars (price was a factor) and let the four boys vote on which one. They chose Music so we made the reservations with no problem, requesting connecting rooms and a refrigerator in one room. We pulled out old photographs including some from our family trip in 1974! (where did I get those clothes?) We watched videos from our previous trips, got the vacation planner video, surfed the Internet and looked at the old guidemaps and mementos we had accumulated.

Travel:

We live in North Carolina about 10-11 hours from WDW by car. We have driven it in one day but since there were 8 of us on this trip, we decided to stop in St. Augustine to spend the night. I drove our mini-van and Bryant drove Mom's car. We got CB radios to stay in touch on the road. Stephen and Zachary packed a few toys, books, and game boys. I printed maps of the United States and brought markers so they could keep up with the different license plates we saw. We found around 30 different states and several Canadian plates. Between gas stops and rest areas, we planned to stop at least once every two hours for bathroom breaks, snacks and walking around.

Preparation day, Friday, June 13

Spent day packing, getting cars ready, cleaning house (yes, it has to be somewhat clean before I go on vacation) Bryant offers to take us to get a burger and I get stung by a bee on my right foot, big toe. Try to act brave, but it hurts! Go to bed at 11 to get up at 5 and leave by 6.

Went to sleep about 12, woke up at 3:30 (toe hurting) and couldn't go back to sleep. I was too excited! We packed lots of food, planning to save money by eating in the room. Since we would be stopping for one night in St. Augustine, we packed one bag with everything we would need for that night and the next day so we didn't have to haul in all the suitcases.

Travel day, Saturday, June 14

Finally leave our house at 6:05, pick up Mom, Janet and boys, then have to come back home to get Sea World discount card I had forgotten. Finally on our way at 7:00 ( only one hour late, pretty good for us). My toe is very swollen and hurts when I press gas pedal. Thank goodness for cruise control!

We planned to take our time driving down to St. Augustine. We had been on the road for about one and a half hours when Bryant came on the radio saying he needed to pass us so we could see if one of the tires looked funny. Well, at 70 mph on I-95, the tire looked just fine to us. So we go on to the South Carolina welcome center and that tire is just as flat as a pancake! He had hit something in the highway. We were close to Dillon, so Bryant and I took the tire into town while the rest of the party relaxed at the rest area.

We finally found a tire store and of course the tire was beyond repair, so we bought a new one, put it back on and got back underway another hour behind schedule!

Ran into traffic delays because of road construction and accidents. Stopped at Georgia welcome center for picnic lunch cut short by thunderstorm. Funny of the day: when we cross the bridge into Florida, Zachary says to Stephen "I'm so excited I could give you a hug!" So they're hugging and bouncing up and down in the seat. We finally arrive at St. Augustine Holiday Inn Express at 6:45. Boys go swimming, we eat a sandwich and turn in early.

Lessons of the day: If you're driving, be flexible and allow plenty of time. We definitely made the right decision to stop for the night after all the delays of the day. When you're traveling with children, catch their enthusiasm. Zachary's and Stephen's excitement level made the delays and frustrations bearable.

Sunday, June 15

We ate the continental breakfast at the hotel. Manager was feeding doughtnuts to the squirrels. When Janet commented on the animals, he said we should stay around until the snakes came out to sun themselves in the parking lot! Sorry, we have to leave now! We decided to go to the ASM to check in before going to Sea World. Arrived at ASM about 9:40. Mom, Janet and I checked in (less than 10 minute wait) while Bryant and the boys looked around the resort.

Funniest thing of the trip: We had left ASM headed for Sea World. Zachary (who had watched the planning videos and Inside Out tapes) said to me "Miss Cathy, you know what?" (yes, he calls me Miss Cathy instead of Aunt Cathy) So I asked him "what is it?" He said, in his most serious voice, "DisneyWorld sure wasn't like it looked on TV." He thought he had seen WDW and we had only been to the hotel! We assured him that the best was yet to come!

Sea World gets the award for the most improved place I've seen in a long time. Our last visit was in 1987 and that place has really changed! We had a great day there. The landscaping is beautiful. We really liked the Shamu show (and got wet too!). We also liked the dolphin tank and the wild artic exhibit.

Terrors of the Deep (sharks) was brand new when we went 10 years ago and Andy enjoyed it as much on this trip as he did then! Stephen and Zachary had a good time at the playground (Shamu's Happy Harbour). Had very good chicken fajitas for lunch at Mango Joe's. We only missed maybe two or three things and left about 4:45 to go back to ASM.

We were sooooo glad we had already checked in. The line was very long and all we had to do was pick up our room keys. We were in Jazz 2, the second building on the right behind the lobby building. We got our connecting rooms and a refrigerator. The location was very good, noise was minimal. We were on the back side of the building (landscape view) on the third floor. We bought our refillable mugs ($8 each) and ate sandwiches in the room.

Janet bought 5-day passes. Mom had bought hers earlier and we had annual passes from trips in December and January. Took boys to the guitar pool for a swim, checked out the arcade and bought milk at the gift shop.

Monday, June 16

This was very weird. We had never been to WDW and not gone to the MK first. But we had decided to skip early entry parks instead of getting up early so we went to Epcot on our first day. We had time in the mornings to get our mugs full of coffee, eat breakfast and be ready to leave by 8:15.

Arrived at Epcot just as gates were opening and headed straight to Journey into Imagination. We got in line for Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, stopping just outside the doors. Definitely a good choice as we never saw this line that short again all week. I just love that Kodak preshow (sang that True Colors song all day long). HISTA is one of our favorites (except for Andy) and this was the first time for Daniel, Zachary, Janet and Mom. Zachary kept his glasses off for most of the show (we never could talk him into seeing the Muppets 3-D show after this one). Janet didn't care for it much either. We probably should have started on something a little calmer.

Walked onto the Dreamfinder/Figment ride (one of Stephen's absolute favorites) and played around at the Imagination playground for about 20 minutes. Stephen and Zachary tried to catch the jumping fountains.

Great Disney moment: Saw Dreamfinder and Figment giving autographs. Stephen pulled out his book and got in line. As Dreamfinder was signing, he whispered to Stephen, "Are those your brothers over there?" Stephen told him that Andy was his brother and Zachary and Daniel his cousins. So Dreamfinder yelled out "Hey Andy, get over here!" So here goes this big 15-year old (I'm too cool for this) boy and Dreamfinder makes him put his arm around Figment for a picture. Then he calls Zachary and Daniel over. Figment throws Zachary's cap to the ground, then grabs Daniel's cap and keeps it. Dreamfinder turns to us and says "What should we make Daniel do to get it back?" Of course, we answer "Kiss Figment!" so we also have some great video of Daniel kissing Figment. Great job, Dreamfinder!! The poor guy was sweating bullets and still putting on a great show.

Headed to The Land pavillion next. Crowds were starting to pick up but not bad at all. We waited about 5 minutes to see Food Rocks. Waited about 15 minutes for Living with the Land boat ride. It was about 12:30 and we were all getting hungry so we decided to fight the lines and eat at the food court. We split up and got in our lines of choice. Mom and I went to the potato stand. There was one person filling orders in the back and having a really hard time keeping up. Lines were very long and extremely slow.

By the time I got to the counter, there were four people working in there and still having a hard time keeping up. Food lines were some of the longest we waited in.

Of course, there were no tables to be found. So Mom found a bench near the stairs and sat down with her tray on her lap. A worker was emptying the nearby trashcan and spoke to her. She made a comment on not finding a table and he walked away and came back with a table. Don't know where he found it, but it was Disney magic at its best! We put 7 people around that one table (I sat on the floor) and enjoyed our lunch. The baked potato (with bacon and cheese) was actually quite tasty.

We caught the Circle of Life show on the way out We skipped the Living Seas since we had spent the previous day at Sea World. Stopped by Innoventions and spent a long time just playing the video games and checking out the technology. We were in the AT&T area (where the wrist phones are) when one of their reps came over to me and complimented me on my hair of all things. We talked hair color for a few minutes then she asked if any of us would like to participate in a test of new overseas phone technology.

Bryant and I agreed and went into a room where we signed permission forms and talked to someone in Poland. We were given scripts to read and were asked to judge the quality of the call. Filled out a response form and received $15 of free long-distance calls each for taking about 5 minutes to participate!

Left Epcot for a sandwich and a nap and returned by 6:30. First stop was Universe of Energy. Preshow has just started so we walked in. Zachary was very impressed with the dinosaurs. Next was Wonders of Life. I went with the boys on Body Wars (5-minute wait, we couldn't believe it!) A definite thumbs-up ride for the boys. (my stomach wasn't so sure...) Mom and I checked out our health on the Met Life computers while Stephen, Zachary and Janet rode the videobikes. Caught Cranium Command with no wait. Also walked onto Horizons. Walked around Test Track, wishing..... We had covered a lot of Future World in just over 2 hours. Made a half-hearted attempt to get around to Illuminations but it started before we got there. We stopped to try to watch but couldn't see much, decided to catch it later in the week and headed out.

Imagine our surprise when we finally get to our bus stop and saw a tractor-trailer bus waiting. We had seen one before but this was our first ride on one. It reminds me of a cattle truck. We had to stand up and it was bumpier than Body Wars! Not impressed, not at all. Disney, buy more buses and lose the cattle trucks!

Tuesday, June 17

We ate breakfast in the room, caught the bus and arrived at MGM as gates opened. Crowds weren't bad and we didn't have long waits anywhere. The boys wanted to go to Star Tours (5-minute wait, they loved it). Janet and Zachary went to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground while the rest of us walked into the Muppets 3-D preshow with about 9 minutes wait. We never miss this one and it's always fun, especially when you don't have to wait a long time!

We met Janet and Zachary and went to the Backlot Tour. Everyone liked this a lot. Zachary didn't know what to expect but enjoyed it. We had an 11:30 priority seating at Sci-Fi Dine Inn Theater so we started walking that way. As we were walking down New York Street, a van full of Toy Story characters came by us. We were thrilled because the brochure said it wasn't performed on Tuesday. We got some great photos of Buzz Lightyear and Green Army Man. Buzz wasn't autographing but Green Army Man was.

Bo Peep and the wrestler guy were also there but by the time we finished with Buzz and Army Man, it was time to head to Sci-Fi. Bryant and the boys and I had eaten at Sci-Fi before. This was our only priority seating meal of the week. It was pretty good, but I'm not sure if it's worth the money. The drive-in feel is very realistic. We were disappointed that they no longer serve popcorn while you wait. Apparently this was stopped shortly after we ate there last (1995). Bryant and Andy got burgers, I got a chicken sandwich and Stephen got the child's mini-burgers. We all got milkshakes (cookies and cream, yum..). Total bill was $53.

After lunch, there was light rain so we went to Indiana Jones. We always enjoy this one a lot but it wasn't as good as usual. The show was shorter than before and the rolling rock segment was missing.

Janet, Stephen, Zachary and I decided to go back to the hotel for a rest while the rest of the group went to the Animation Tour. They liked it but said it was a little rushed moving from one room to another. They also got a preview of the Hercules parade which was being filmed.

After naps and snacks, we were off to Typhoon Lagoon. Lots of people were leaving as we got there (about 4:30) and crowds weren't a problem at all. Zachary and Janet spent most of their time at Ketchakiddie Creek and in the edge of the wave pool. I took Stephen and Daniel to the falls where we rode all of them with no more than a 10-minute wait. Daniel swam through the shark pool and he and Stephen went on the storm slides about 8 times. Bryant and Andy had planned to go back to MGM but ended up napping at the hotel. Took another cattle-truck ride back to hotel. Not as bad this time but the connection between the truck and trailer was very loud and squeaky. We got back to ASM about 7:30.

Ate sandwiches in the room and took boys to pool while Janet and I did laundry. Laundry room at ASM is convenient to the pool. Washers and dryers are 1.00 per load. We started about 8:30 and there wasn't anyone else there. As the parks started closing, the laundry room got more crowded. It got to the point that I had to sit in the laundry room and guard the dryer because people kept opening it to see if it was being used and didn't press the start button again. Got back to room about 11:30 with clean clothes.

Wednesday, June 17

Finally, Magic Kingdom! Ate breakfast at the food court. As we got to the bus stop, Bryant remembered he needed to take some medicine, so we got on the bus and he went back to the room. Got to MK just as gates were opening.

Realized as getting off the bus that Bryant has Andy's pass with him, so Andy, Stephen and I wait for him. That little bit of time made a difference. The rest of our group had ridden 4 rides in Fantasyland by the time we met up with them at 9:30.

Lines weren't so bad in Fantasyland. We hit our favorites, Dumbo (our traditional first ride at MK), Peter Pan, Small World and Lion King show. It became a favorite of everyone and was better than I had remembered. Never did get to Mr. Toad, Snow White or Teacups (the absolute last ride I wanted to go on anyway).

Andy and Daniel went to Tommorowland while rest of us headed to Haunted Mansion. Long lines so we took the riverboat ride. We had seen characters on the boat on a previous trip, but there weren't any on this ride. Stephen and Zachary wanted to go to Tom Sawyer's Island. They had a ball going in the caves (I had to pass on those, ugh) and in the fort. Best surprise of the morning: lemon slushees and frozen fruit bars at the fort. It was hot and they hit the spot plus we could sit down and enjoy them while the boys played in the fort.

Met up with Andy and Daniel and we headed through Frontierland. Stephen and Zachary stopped at the shooting gallery, then we went to the Country Bear Jamoboree. This was the all-time rowdiest crowd I had ever seen in this show. We clapped and stomped and enjoyed the air-conditioning.

As we were leaving the park, we decided to go on Pirates of the Caribbean (10-15 minute wait). Jungle Cruise line was too long for the heat so we went back to the ASM for lunch and naps.

Returned to MK and hit Haunted Mansion. Lines at Big Thunder and Space Mountain were very long so we decided to try them after Spectromagic. We decided to catch the Tiki Birds and were glad we did as CM said it would definitely be closing for rehab in October. Also learned that the tiki birds were Disney's first Audio-Animatronic creations and that the show hadn't changed since it debuted 34 years ago!

Ate at El Pirata Y el Perico then went to Frontierland to find spot for Spectromagic. We found a place near the bridge that goes to Splash Mountain. Big lesson learned: don't take a spot near where the walkways are being kept open. There was adequate room when we got there but as parade time got closer, we were constantly pushed by people trying to squeeze into the fringe of the walkway before the CMs made them clear out of the way. We decided that walkway/crowd control for Spectromagic is one of the worst jobs at WDW. As soon as the ropes were in place and the parade began, people came from everywhere and the crowd was about 10-12 people deep where we were. Stephen and Zachary were being pushed against the rope. We ended up with two frightened little boys and Janet exchanging words with one particularly pushy person when Zachary's neck was being chafed by the rope. After a couple of floats, we bailed out and watched from a safer distance.

After Spectromagic, Andy, Daniel and I rode Big Thunder. Line was pretty short and it was a great ride at night, very different from daytime. No one wanted to tackle Splash Mountain with me so we decided to try Space Mountain before going back to the hotel. Andy and I rode with about a 10 minute wait. I was so excited because he hasn't ever been much of a thrill rider until his marching band trip to Carowinds this spring. Finally, someone to ride Space Mountain with!

Thursday, June 19

We had never been to River Country so we decided to give it a try. From ASM, we took the bus to the MK, then got on a boat which stops at Discovery Island and River Country. We made pretty good time getting there about 9:10. River Country is much smaller than Typhoon Lagoon and is more like a lake.

There is an area for little children and a deep pool area also. There wasn't a wait for the falls or slides when we got there. Crowds picked up somewhat but never became unbearable. We left Mom, Janet and Zachary at River Country while the rest of us went back to the hotel. They went to Discovery Island after leaving River Country and enjoyed it so much I wish I had gone. Zachary is really into birds and got to see the bird show and snake show. They did hear rumors that Discovery Island may close when Animal Kingdom opens.

We just missed the boat leaving River Country and waited on the dock for almost 40 minutes until another one came. It ended up taking an hour and 15 minutes to get from River Country back to ASM. If we go back there, we'll drive.

After a short rest, Bryant and Stephen and I decided to go to MK. Stephen had spotted something in the Pirates of the Caribbean shop that he wanted. After making his purchase, we rode Big Thunder and caught the train to the front of the park. We took the monorail to the Ticket and Transportation Center and got in line for the monorail to Epcot. We asked about riding in the front and had to wait for the next train. The attendant spent a lot of time talking to us and showing us magic tricks. The monorail driver was very friendly and let Stephen help drive. He told us he was hoping to come to North Carolina on his vacation so we told him about some of our favorite places. We all got monorail pilots licenses when we arrived at Epcot.

We met up with Mom, Andy and Daniel then caught the Rivers of Time ride in Mexico. We wanted to get a good view for Illuminations. Bryant and I were eager to see it after hearing about the improved version. Found a bench between Mexico and Norway and took turns waiting while others went to eat.

Once again, a long line for food at the Cantina de San Angel. It took about 35 minutes to order and pick up our food. We got combination plates which were okay. The salads looked good, maybe next time...

Finally, 9:00 came around, the lights dimmed and it was show time. Wow!!! What a great show! The fireworks and lasers are very well coordinated with the music. We were all very impressed.

Friday, June 20

We finished packing and loaded up the luggage then went off to try to finish up. Caught the bus to MGM because we all wanted to go on The Great Movie Ride. It was good as always. We rode on the gangster side. We split up with Mom, Janet and Zachary heading to MK while the rest of us went to see the Hunchback show. This is one of our favorites at MGM and this performance was better, if possible, than the previous ones. Hats off to the cast for a wonderful performance!

We got to see Matt the juggler that I had read about on the radp. Good show!

Said goodbye to MGM and headed to MK to meet others. Ate lunch at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe in Tommorrowland. This is another family tradition that my boys expect at least once on a trip. With all the fixings you can add, the hamburgers aren't so bad.

After lunch, the boys rode the race cars and we went to Toontown to ride the Barnstormer. The line wasn't very long and Zachary enjoyed his first roller coaster ride. He and Stephen played on Donald's Boat for a few minutes. The dreaded time to leave was approaching so we took the train to the front of the park. We took the monorail to TTC and caught the bus to the Marketplace. Spent about an hour at World of Disney (gotta love it!) and caught the bus back to ASM. It was a little bit easier leaving after going to the Marketplace.

We left ASM and headed to St. Augustine, spent the night and drove home on Saturday.

Some observations (personal and group opinions):

Here's the final segment of my trip report. I've tried to be honest about what our group liked and disliked but I realize that others have totally different opinions. This segment is a summary of the previous parts. Thanks for your attention and patience and your wonderful knowledge of WDW! As you leave this report, please gather your personal belongings, take small children by the hand and have a Disney day!

Accomodations:

We all enjoyed the All-Star Music resort. Even though there are a lot of rooms, the three-story buildings make the complex seem smaller than resorts such as Caribbean Beach and Dixie Landings. Yes, the rooms were smaller but we made an extra effort to keep things put away and organized. Even with the refrigerator, a large cooler and 2 boxes of food in the room, we weren't too crowded. One problem in our room was the airconditioning vent. It blew directly onto the head of mine and Bryant's bed. We finally pulled the curtain over it and redirected the air flow. This didn't seem to be a problem in the other room. There was a six-drawer chest that also held the television and a small table with two chairs. Bathroom was standard with a one-sink dressing area with shelf and clothes rod. There was also a small safe.

We only went to the guitar pool and liked it a lot (even though I slipped on the step getting in..hope no one was watching) There are several lifeguards spaced around the pool and plenty of chairs and tables.

Laundry room was a little small especially after parks closed and lots of people were trying to wash clothes. But it was worth doing laundry not to have to pack so many clothes. We took measured detergent in ziplock bags. Detergent was also for sale for .75 for a single-load box.

ASM has a large arcade which was a definite hit with the boys. Games were .50 to 2.00.

The food court was smaller than some of the other hotels but very adequate. There is a good selection of prepackaged fruit, salads, cookies, etc. and 3 or 4 stations where you can get nachos, chicken, burgers, pizza and more. We didn't eat a lot at the food court except for breakfast and snacks. We liked the nachos and soft-serve ice cream. One thing I would like to see at the food courts is a popcorn machine (with refillable cup?) For some reason when I come back from the parks, I'm craving popcorn. We used our refillable mugs many times. You can get soft drinks (including pink lemonade and fruit punch), tea and coffee. Milk and juice is purchased separately. There is a small bar outside the food court.

The ASM gift shop has a nice selection of tee shirts and souvenirs. I bought Bryant a Father's Day gift there and the CM was great about arranging it in a gift box. We had only good experiences with the CMs at ASM. All we dealt with were very friendly and helpful.

Food:

Eating in the room saved quite a bit of money. The refrigerater cost $5 per night and held our sandwich fixings, milk and juice quite nicely. We bought milk and bread in the gift shop. We took snacks (trail mix, pretzels, crackers, etc) and water bottles to the parks and bought very few snacks. We had to have mickey ice cream bars and I had to have popcorn every now and then. We bought milk and bread in the gift shop. When we did eat at the parks, it was at the fast-food type places except for our meal at Sci-Fi.

Transportation:

We certainly got our money's worth out of the bus system. For the most part, buses ran often and drivers were good. We absolutely didn't like the tractor-trailer type buses. The only really problem we had was getting from River Country back to the hotel.

We had one bus driver from Marketplace to ASM who was crazy. She had us singing PLUTO (to the tune of BINGO) and The Wheels on the Bus. There is only one bus stop at the resort so it can be crowded especially in the mornings. The shaded benches are also quite a ways back from the bus stop and it can be a hot wait.

Weather:

June in Florida is hot, there's no other word for it! We used a lot of sunscreen and wore caps or visors whenever we went out. Water bottles were a must and we took frequent breaks in the shade and air conditioning. The heat makes the swimming pool and water parks feel sooooo good! One thing I really hadn't thought about was heat from the concrete. I saw two small boys crying because the concrete was burning their bare feet. We made sure to wear sandals or water shoes when walking around the hotel.

Crowds:

We have been and done the early entry days and that is a good strategy until the parks open up. Not going to early entry parks worked very well on this trip. Crowds at Epcot, MGM and the water parks were never very bad, but the MK crowds were always heavy. We were especially glad we went to Epcot on Monday after talking to people around the pool who had been to MK that day and said it was extremely crowded.

Advice:

Go into a WDW vacation knowing that you can't see and do it all unless you have unlimited time and money. We usually go for five days and know that we'll have to pick and choose which attractions to see.

We never rode Splash Mountain on this trip and I haven't ridden Tower of Terror yet. But those will be there later and we have lots of good memories of what we did.

Pace yourself so you don't run out of energy by midweek. We've done that before and can vouch for the value of a mid-day nap. We saw so many tired or cranky children in the parks at night that we were glad ours had a nap and were rested.

Catch the enthusiasm and spirit of Disney. Don't be obsessed with schedules and time frames. Have a tentative plan but allow for flexibility. Remember to have fun!

Unless other families are vastly different from ours, we don't normally spend 6 or 7 days living in the same room and spending all of our waking hours together. Compromise so that everyone has a chance to do something that is really important to him or her. Close quarters can lead to crankiness and short tempers (at least it does in my family). We have much more fun than arguments, but it is a reality.

With that thought in mind,

A final note to my family:

I am so glad we had a chance to go on this trip. I love you all so much and can't wait until we can go again! Please forgive me for the times when I was snappy, quick-tempered and/or rude. You guys are the best.
