Roxann - June 23-29, 1997 - Contemporary & Caribbean Beach Resort
Time of Year: Summer
Travel Method: Plane, Rental Car Resort: CR, CBR Accommodations: Standard Room Ages Represented in Group: Elementary, Teen, Adult WDW Experience Represented in Group: Frequent Comments: Roxann and her family visited WDW for the fourth time in June. Her report is a play-by-play one, covers both the Contemporary and Caribbean Beach Resorts in detail, and discusses many of the family's meals (including prices) at the restaurants they visited. After reading this NG for quite some time I decided to take along a note book on my June trip to jot down thoughts and log our daily activities. I thought it would be a drag but I really enjoyed it and would encourage others to do the same. Intro: We (me & hubbie age 40, 2 sons ages 12 & 14) have been to WDW 4 times as a family. I had been in college back in 1977. June 23rd We live in CT (like many other radper's) and flew out of Kennedy for a 9:10 am flight. The traffic on I95 was brutal! We made it to the airport at 8:40am. Hubbie had to park the car in long term and he missed the flight. He took the next flight at 4:50pm!!! Anyway...............plane was packed (not a seat left) and flight was uneventful. We landed exactly 2 hours from take off. Waited 25 minutes for our luggage! The crowd was getting very restless. I had reserved a Neon from Dollar in hubbie's name (and credit card)! My credit card didn't have enough credit on it but after me telling my sad story (I was almost in tears) the manager lowered the amount to be charged and upgraded me free to a Sebring convertible!! Now things are looking up... Luckly we had directions from the airport to WDW from Deb Wills - thanks Deb. We drove to the Contemporary with the top down, of course, in 99 degree heat! When we saw the tower we screamed (good thing hubbie wasn't with us)! Stopped at the guard gate and told him we were there to check in. He asked to see my reservation then through the 2 way radio in the guard shack I heard someone ask my name. Now I had read security was stepped up but I was beginning to wonder. The guard called my name back to the radio and waved us through. As I pulled up to the front of the building I could see Pooh and Eeyore which I thought was a bit unusual. As we got closer I could see lots of CM's. A bellhop directed me to pull up and stop the car, then a CM whisked us out of our car with 25th anniversary balloons in hand. Remember the Magic music starts playing, the CM's are clapping and it is announced that we are the "Sorcery family of the Day"!!! We had our picture taken with Pooh & Eeyore which was sent to our town newspaper and a copy to us. We received a Contemporary 25th anniversary commerative coin, a lovely certificate with our names and the date on it, and a brick with our family name and date which will be placed in the South wing of the Contemporary. We each received a 25th anniversary pin with ribbons saying "Sorcerer of the Day." I was lead into the lobby by the manager of the Contemporary and got express check in (no waiting in line) and was introduced to the assistant manager. I was introduced to everyone as the Sorcerer of the Day! Geez, it was exciting and hubbie wasn't there to enjoy the moment!! The Contemporary picks a family each day during the 25th anniversary to be their Sorcerer of the Day. You must be the first family to arrive at 1:25 to check in. We got to our room - North wing room 7380 which is on the 3rd floor on the parking lot side. I was a bit disappointed when I heard that but it was great. We could see the monorail going in and out of the tower and Fantasy in the Sky at night - truly a wonderful site!! Unfortunately I didn't have much cash and hubbie (who missed the flight) had the travelers checks so I was unable to purchase our AP's. We went down to Food & Fun snack center for some lunch. Then changed and walked to the pool which had been remodeled since our trip in October. The pool is in the shape of Mickey with a nice water slide that my sons enjoyed. There are 2 jacuzzis and a water fountain, lots of chairs around the pool and more on the sand. There is also a quiet pool which is small and round and beautifully tiled. Back to room and finally spoke to MIA hubbie who informed me I was to pick him up at MCO at 7:30pm. No problem I've got that great convertible! Showered, changed and left for the airport which is about a 25 minute drive. We had planned to have dinner at Chef Mickey's but that was out so after hubbie was settled in we walked (with our travelers checks) to MK. It's about a 7 minute walk and I just love it! That's what's so great about staying at the Contemporary. Went to guest services and purchased our AP's with MKC discount - $1070 for 4 - that didn't hurt a bit!! It was around 8:30pm and we were really hungry so we walked to the Plaza Pavillion - no line, quick service. Got a table on the second level with a great view for Spectro. We had 2 tuna pasta salads, 1 tossed salad with delicious bread sticks dunked in marinara sauce, 1 6inch pizza, 3 bottled waters and 1 soda = $26.25. Watched Spectro (I love the feeling I get when I see this the first time during my trip) then walked around side between Plaza and Timekeeper for fireworks. What a great spot, I highly recommend it! Tinkerbell (who I absolutely love) waved to me as she wizzed by (ok so it wasn't to me). What excitement. Fantasy lasted 20 minutes and was spectacular. Walked to Liberty Bell at 10:30pm and boarded, nice cool breeze, no characters at night. From there went to Haunted Mansion - 10 minute wait. Saw walls up for construction outside as we exited. I now know what they were building back there! Leisurely walked back to Contemporary for the night. June 24th Up at 7:25am. To Food & Fun at 8am for breakfast out by 8:20am. Bought 4 refillable mugs for $8.50 each. This was a smart move for us as we more than got our money back on this trip and we will take them with us on our trip in November. Ate breatfast - 2 muffins, french toast, fruit cup = $13.02. Good lemon poppy muffins, large and moist. Check out lines move quickly. Walked to MK and waited at entrance to Adventureland. Love the view of Crystal Palace from here. Spoke with a CM who was celebrating her 20th year! She dropped the rope at 9am and we quickly walked to Splash Mountain - line was out of site!!! Went back to Jungle Cruise - 15 min wait. We had a fun guide and walking through the line is interesting. Walked on to Pirates at 9:45am - fun as usual. Looked real hard to be sure it was politically correct :-) To Sunshine Tree Terrace for a yummy Citrus Swirl ($1.95) - cool and refreshing on a 100 degree day (100% humidity too!). Shopped in Elephant's Tail across from Sunshine Tree and hubbie fell in love with a Safari hat with Mickey ears ($15). He looked absolutely ridiculous but for the first time let loose and felt the magic!! Checked Splash Mountain line at 11:15am which was almost to the entrance of Adventureland. Walked to Hall of Presidents at 11:25am - cool, comfortable and interesting. We wanted to eat at Aunt Polly's Landing as we had done this several trips ago but the lines for the rafts were very long. Took train to Main St then mono to Poly and had lunch at Captain Cooks. Less variety, smaller selection than Food & Fun. Wished we had gone back to Contemporary and used our mugs! Had cheeseburger basket, 1 beer, bottled water (Zephyrhills of course!), chicken tenders (which were surprising good), deli tuna sub and 1 soda = $23.67. We were going to eat at Coral Isle Cafe but the prices were just too high ($8.95 for a cheeseburger). Back to Contemporary via mono. Pool time! Dinner at Chef Mickey's - good not great, lots of fun. Selection included meatloaf, chicken marsala, swordfish, pasta bolognese, parmesan mashed potatoes (outstanding), salad bar with peel & eat shrimp. Kids side included chicken strips, burgers, pizza. Dessert bar ws very good - chocolate, chocolate mousse cake, cheesecake, mini Italian pastries, cookies, make your own sundaes and frost your own cupcakes with Goofey. 4 adults = $84.59 w/tax. Walked to MK - not as crowded. Watched Fantasy from Tomorrowland near Galaxy Stage - clear viewing. June 25th Up at 7:15am - dragged myself out of bed. Very hard for my sons to wake up. Breakfast at Food & Fun - 2 bagels (decent), breakfast plate, juice, cereal, fruit cup = $12.16. Mono to TTC switched to EPCOT mono. Got to gates at 8:45am and they were letting people in. Straight to Spaceship Earth - 10 minute wait, line moved. I really like to start off with SE - it's fascinating, enjoyable and yes I miss Walter Cronkite too! To Honey I Shrunk - 10 minute wait - another favorite of mine and I like the Kodak preshow! When we exited the line was triple of what it was for us!! Off to The Land which we hadn't done in 5 years. Living with the Land - 25 minutes wait, 45 when we left. Off to Univ of Energy - 5 minute wait in the sweltering sun then into the preshow. We did this in Oct when it first opened and enjoyed it. Liked it this time but I think it loses something the second time around. Walked to TT - gee I wish this would open!!! Then to Norway. Wanted to ride Malstrom but wait was 25 minutes and we had PS at 1pm. Browsed in stores then to Akershus. Seated right away. Very good food, interesting, tasty, good service, and reasonably priced - 4 adult meals, 1 beer, 2 iced teas, 1 soda - $54.44 w/tax and MKC discount (10%). If you like cheese and fish and are willing to try new foods I would recommend eating there. My 12 year old hated it and ate from the salad bar only. Back to Contemporary to relax and pool time! Drove to Y&B for dinner at Beaches & Cream. Went to Ariel's - too bad it closed - we had 2 ˝ lb lobsters there last October! Restaurant looked open with tables, chairs and aquarium still there. Vineyard bar was empty. Dinner at B&C was a blast. Sat at the counter and our waiter Robert was wonderful. 2 hot dogs, 1 single cheeseburger, 1 double cheeseburger, 1 strawberry shake, 2 sodas, 1 sunshine drink = $31.75. While we were there a group ordered the Kitchen Sink and the waiter made a big deal of it. The lights dimmed and he announced what he was servingt. He told us that if 1 person finishes it in 1 hour it is free. He has worked there 3 years and has only seen it done once. Walked to EPCOT via International Gateway which was deserted - it was almost scary. We saw a living statue in France - wow - all done in off white! Walked over to Italy to get a seat for IllumiNations but it was roped off for a convention per a CM. The area next to it was also roped off for American Express white glove!!! That's new to me. The sky was ominus, very dark and it started to lightening. We had a downpour at 8:40pm but the CM said the show would go on and it did at 8:50pm. We stood under Il Bel Cristallo. Much improved music from October - I really hated that! Lasted 12 minutes but the aftershow was even better. Lights and music continue for about 20 minutes longer. Walked to Swan & Dolphin and toured the lobbies. Dolphin beautiful but Swan was fair and looked dated. Saw Sorcery in the Sky while walking back over bridge to Y&B. Picked up our car at 10:30pm and drove back to Contemporary for night. June 25th Up at 7:40am everyone else up at 8am. Food & Fun for breakfast - 3 cereals w/banana, tator tots, bagel = $9.04. At EPCOT at 9:30am. No line at Living Seas - walked right in. I love the Manatees, we also saw 2 dolphins come out for a short time then back to their area with researchers. We spent quite a bit of time here. Picked up a Dive Quest brochure for hubbies brother. Walked to WS - stopped for a beaver tail w/stawberries and cream ($3) - tasty, messy, split it 4 ways (actually we each took a few bites). Very hot and humid, boy could I go for a Citrus Swirl. To Impressions de France movie - first time - liked it, interesting, nice and cool in there! Everyone was imitating the french accent!?!!? 12:30pm -to Japan - went to Tempura Kiku - no PS, no problem, we were seated 10 minutes later. This was lots of fun. Were seated at a U shaped table with others. Chefs are in the middle. Very good sushi, very light tempura - 2 beers, 1 Mickey deal, Ebo for 2, small order of sushi, 1 Gosho- maki, 1 soda = $58.78. I highly recommend this restaurant. Mono back to Contemporary for pool time! Thunder storms and rain. Dinner at Concourse Steakhouse in Contemporary. This restaurant is often overlooked and is excellent for B, L and D. 1 monorail ale, 2 iced teas, virgin strawberry daquiri, filet mignon (excellent), child's pepperoni pizza, seafood special w/caesar salads, mixed grill, 2 lemon meringue desserts, 1 tiramisu = $102.82 w/tax - expensive but well worth it. The dessert chef works in an open area and kids can go up and work with him as my 12 year old son did. The chef gave him a lesson on using chocolate in a pastry bag to make plate decorations. He was so patient with my son who used over 10 plates! Our meal was excellent, I ordered the parmesan mashed potatoes (from Chef Mickey's) with my filet, the caesar salad is tossed at your table and the deserts are to die for. My tiramisu was in a chocolate tea cup with white chocolate shavings on top - totally edible!!! Excellent service too! Did some shopping in the hotel stores. Back to our room and watched Fantasy at 10pm - lasted around 5 minutes :-( June 27th Up at 9am - it's a sleep in/pool day!!!!! Another hot and humid day. Breakfast at Concourse Steakhouse at 10am - 2 coffees (lousy to put it mildly), 3 orange juices, mickey waffles, omelette supreme, southwest breakfast, eggs benedict = $43.04. To pool at 11am - found chairs, table and umbrella! Pool water great temperature. Stayed there until 1:45 then thunder and lightening. CM's are very strict about shutting the pool down and everyone leaving the pool area. Sand Bar stayed open though! Back to room at 2pm and maid had not been there yet :-( Lights flickered and we heard sirens, fire engines pulled up to tower. We were told later that power was out on the top 2 floors by a hit of lightening.Showered, dressed and went down to Food & Fun for a snack - fruit plate, brownie (huge, chewey, fudgy, yummy), chips = $8.65. Watched lightening storm from concourse - magnificant! Drove to WL at 3:30pm to search for hidden Mickey's. Valet parked, went to guest services and picked up a Hidden Mickey list. I just love WL's lobby, sat in a rocker in front of the fireplace - great on a rainy day. We hooked up with several other Mickey searchers which was a lot of fun. Finding them was quite difficult, we didn't have time to go on the other floors to look and it was raining so we didn't spend much time outside searching. Kept the list and will return in November to complete our search. Back to Contemporary at 5pm, still raining. 6pm PS at California Grill. Met old friends of ours - she is now a CM in CRO (did I mention she is my BEST friend). She made the PS early because CM discount of 20% only applies to PS prior to 6:30pm. Seated immediately after CM took our picture. Lots of empty seats, good meal, great CM discount, good service. 2 gin & tonics, virgin strawberry daquiri, 2 iced teas, 1 soda, salmon special, salad greens, pork, risotto, bonsai roll, filet, tri cheese pizza, sushi deluxe, greens, 3 coffees, 3 homemade ice cream, cappuccino quake, chocolate wave = $156.93 w/CM discount! WAlked to MK at 8:30pm, train to Frontierland. Checked Splash Mountain line - 45 min wait. To Jungle Cruise, no wait, lots of fun at night, looks quite different. To Pirates - no wait - kind of scary at night, most boats were empty. Walked to Splash Mountain but couldn't get through - Spectro had started. Watched from there between side of Peco Bill's and walkway to Splash Mountain. Great spot, few people, end of parade so floats stop and you can get a good look. Went back to Splash Mountain - 40 minute wait on in 30 min. This ride is the best at night - lots of fun with friends and the park looks so beautiful at night. To Big Thunder Mountain - 20 min wait - left train; great at night, loads of fun. Took train back to Main St. and walked to Contemporary 11:40pm. What a wonderful time we had with our friends. She had lots of stories to tell about us Disney nuts calling CRO! Showed us her official CM tag (yes they wear them in CRO), showed me her 25th anniversary checks (wish I had them!!!) and told me about the great discounts she gets at the CM trailer. Unfortunately guests are not allowed :-( June 28th Today is day 6 - unfortunately we had to check out of the Contemporary as we had ressies at CBR for our last 2 nights. Drove to DL for breakfast at Boatwright's. Good hearty servings, our waiter Ghassan was the BEST!! So good in fact that it was his last day there - he was being transferred to MGM, in what position I don't know. 1 Big Woods combo, banana stuffed french toast, basic breakfast, blueberry pancakes, 4 orange juices and 2 coffees = $37.10 w/tax. Everything was good including the coffee! DL lobby is nice but small, good penny presses. Drove to CBR, got lost. Made it to the Custom House and checked in at 12:10pm. Line was VERY long but moved rather quickly. THere was a CM in line taking info from guests which really didn't help move things faster but made all us impatient guests feel better! A child had vomited and the place reeked!! It didn't feel like there was air conditioning on - all the windows were opened! Moses checked us in -?did he see my requests? - I mentioned we wanted a nonsmoking room on the second floor which he had but not in Aruba. He made a phone call and said he found a room in Aruba which was ready. There is a small bell hop shack outside the Custom House where you stop and ask a bell hop to meet you at your building. Bell hop was waiting for us when we got to our bldg. (53). We were in room 5342 which was nice and rather cozy. The bathroom was tiny with the sinks outside it. There was a coffee maker and the fully stocked refrigerator. I have the minibar pricelist if anyone is interested in specifics. I can tell you that everything is expensive however there are several coupons attached to the handle which included a free beer and soft drink which we took advantage of. Walked to Old Port Royale pool (a very long hot walk from Aruba) which was packed. No chairs available, the area doesn't accomodate many people. We finally found 1 chair to put our gear on and my sons jumped in the pool. Hubbie and I went on the beach and found a lounge chair and a hammock. Very hot but not as humid day. The pool got a 2 thumbs down from my sons and disliked the water slide which looked pretty pitiful. It is small and made of concrete and needs repair work. Back to room at 3pm, showered, changed and drove to Character Warehouse in the Belz Outlet, about a 25 min drive in traffic. This place was great - excellent prices and a wide variety of items. Hubbie got a long sleeved button down shirt with Mickey crest for $8.99, bandana print Mickey boxers and hobo check boxers $4.99, Minnie & Mickey folders 99cents each, postcards for 9 cents each. No MKC discount and CM's don't get a discount either. I highly recommend making the trip. Left around 6pm and got caught in a nasty electrical storm (the convertible top leaked). Drove straight to GF for 7:30pm PS at GF Cafe. We had a bit of a wait so penny pressed and people watched. As usual service was slow and food inconsistant. Deserts are very good and expensive. 1 french onion soup, chicken soup, childs cheeseburger Jiminey, GF sandwich, 2 Florida burgers, 2 iced teas, 1 Bass ale on tap, 1 coffee, chocolate banana dessert, key lime pie = $69.65 w/tax. I just can't recommend this restaurant. It is the second time we've tried it and won't go back. Services is slow and food is fair at best. Prices are high. Walked around - pool had lots of people in it. Summerhouse snack stand was closed. Took boat to MK via Poly; cool comfortable evening. In MK at 9:50pm. Stood on balcony of train station to watch Fantasy. We had never done this before and it was great. To see the fireworks over Cinderella's Castle is a moving experience and the music and announcements can be heard. The only down side is I couldn't get a glimps of Tinkerbell :-( We hopped on the train with everyone else and got off in Toontown which was practically empty at 11pm. Went in Minnie and Mickey's house - fun & imaginative. Went into Country Fair for my son to have his passport stamped. Rode Goofey's Barnstorm - no wait. Fun short ride, 1 good drop, 1 sharp turn. Walked through boat next door and rang the bell. Got back on train which was waiting there, got off at Main St at 11:10pm and took ferry to GF ( 5 min wait). Picked up car and drove back to CBR at midnight. We talked about the Contemporary all evening wishing we were still staying there! June 29th Today is day 7 - up at 7:40am by a small child knocking on the wrong door!!! Drove to the Contemporary and had breakfast at Food & Fun snack center using our refillable mugs! Cereal w/banana, tator tots, krispie cake, bagel, fruit plate and danish = $13.30 w/tax. Mono to EPCOT, sat with driver who was a bore. At gates at 9:50am, short lines but a long line for Spaceship Earth, no line for Honey I Shrunk. Walked to The Land so hubbie could make 10:30am reservation for the Behind the Seeds tour ($6adults, $4child). Had a snack at food court which has a good variety but not all restaurants were open. Sons and I went to Journey into Imagination which we hadn't done in 5 years. Short line, moved very quickly. We really enjoyed it - my notes say "good, wild" kind of like a bad acid trip!?! Went upstairs to the playground and had a great time, spent ˝ hr there, not too crowded. Love the huge kaleidescopes! To Innovations, sons played Sega while I went to AT&T to e-mail friends. Not that crowded. Back to The Land to meet hubbie at noon. He very much enjoyed the tour and would recommend it. Walked to WS - Mexico no wait at El Rio del Tiempo. Stopped at San Angel checked lunch menu, no PS, no problem seated immediately. We had eaten here for dinner last Oct. and were very disappointed but we are glad we gave it a second chance. Lunch was good, reasonably priced (sorry I don't have the receipt but total was $54 w/tax). Mexico Donald was outside signing autographs. My son got a Guest of Honor name tag (he lost his from Oct) with his name and hometown on it ($5). Went to Discover Center so hubbie could pick up his hydroponic plans which are part of the tour he took. Surprised me with a lovely pair of silk Mickey pajamas!! Sat outside Centorium Store and watched the water show - just wonderful and wonderous! There is a talking water fountain there. Back to Contemporary, picked up our mugs from car and refilled at F&F. Spoke w/2 tape artists who were drawing a mural at the pool entrance of the main bldg; they have permission to tape art anywhere! Drove back to CBR at 3:45pm, laundry and nap to 5pm. Called front desk at 5:30pm and asked for late check out - got room until 1pm.Walked to bus stop at 6:10pm and waited 10 min for MGM bus. We made a complete circle (11 min drive) then to MGM (4min drive)!! It started to sprinkle, picked up map and walked to Mama Melroses for 7:05 PS. This place is not what I had expected. Pizza special was southwestern and music was pop rock. Service fair. 2 glasses Chianti, soup, bottomless past bowl w/sausage, bottomless pasta bowl w/bolognese (yuck!!), 1 child pepperoni pizza, 2 sodas, 1 perrier = $62.47 w/tax and 10% MKC discount. I cannot recommend this restaurant, I'm Italian and have been eating this food for 40years and this was one of the worst meal I've had anywhere - and it is not a taste of Little Italy which I had read. I've been there many times and no way - enough said. Went on Backlot Tour at 8:30pm - 10 min wait. Fun as always. Out at 9:05 - walked through Looney Bin - fun; walked through museum with Evita stuff, oscars, emmys - interesting, no one there. Walked to Great Movie ride at 9:15pm to get a place to sit for Sorcery, very crowded. Hubbie got us Mickey ice cream sticks - yum! CM kept us busy with funny, annoying songs to sing. Fireworks started at 9:50pm. We had never seen these before and were blown away by them, very bright and extravagant. I now know why they don't do this all year round! We waited about 15 minutes for the crowds to thin out, shopped a bit. Walked to bus stop at 10:20, long line, 10 min wait. In room at 10:45pm. June 30th Up at 8:30am everyone else up at 9:15am. Drove to Old Port Royale at 9:50am for breakfast. This place was a mad house, crowded and noisey. Lines were long, food fair and expensive. 1 western omelet w/sausage, orange juice, 2 adult Isle bounty, 2 coffees, 1 Old Port bacon = $30.66 This was not for us! Drove back to room, changed into our bathing suits and walked to Aruba quiet pool. Not many people there, got chairs and table. Pool ok, small, cold (?unheated), kind of dirty along edges. Back to room at 12:15pm, showered, packed and drove to Contemporary at 1:15pm. Took mono around to MK then train to Frontierland. 10 min wait for raft to Tom Sawyer Island. Walked around island, nice and comfortably shady, fun barrel bridge. Stopped at Aunt Polly's Landing for a drink. Took raft back, got on train to Main St. MK was packed that day! Monorail to Contemporary at 3:15pm, Tigger was in the lobby and we got his autograph. Hubbie went to Sandbar for 1 last Cancun Meltdown, looked at tape art. Drove to Marketplace, tough to find a parking space. Walked to Rainforest, gave our name at 4:05pm and had a 30 min wait. Looked around store, everything overpriced. Called to be seated at 4:35pm and seated at 4:40pm in Elephant Room. The elephants roared every 10 min or so and it became annoying after a while as did the thunder storm. Large menu selection, food good, not great, atmosphere interesting. Our server Marcus had fallen several minutes before our arrival and he thought he broke his wrist! Needless to say Marcus was preoccupied with his pain. 1 Rainforest Ricky, 1 calypso dip, 1 jambalaya, bottle water, 1 plantation sandwich, 1 monkey biz childs burger, 1 waffle dessert, 1 tortoise pie, 1 iced tea, 1 greek pizza = $74.71. This is a place you go not for the food but the experience. I would recommend going once and only once. Out at 6pm, shopped at World of Disney, we've been there before but it is still an amazing place! Lot's of 25th anniversary stuff. To car at 6:40pm, drove to airport, checked baggage then returned rental car. Checkout 5 minutes. Upstairs and to gate by 8pm for a 8:40pm flight. Uneventful flight home, 2hrs 35 min. Back to CT at 1:05am. Roxann
