of Animal Kingdom Lodge!
Overview
The multi-story, thatched-roofed Animal Kingdom
Lodge, is Walt Disney World's newest resort. It is
themed to appear like a game lodge on the African savanna, which
it is...as the Disney Imagineers have provided this hotel with
it's own savanna stocked with several hundred native African animals
and birds -- including zebras, giraffes, wildebeests (Mufasa's
nemeses), and others.
The lobby has a huge 4 story observation window
looking out over the plain. It's decorated with African
artifacts and artwork. A huge mud fireplace provides some
warmth, and a swinging rope bridge -- that crosses the lobby --
adds even more unique character to this resort.
Room Description
The vast majority of the guest rooms have a direct
view of the savanna from their balconies. In fact, every
room (regardless of view) has a balcony. The room decor
is authentic, with handcrafted furniture, earth-tone walls and
carpet, and brilliantly-colored tapestries.
The vast majority of the rooms at Animal Kingdom
Lodge have a pair of queen-sized beds, standard bathroom layout
(with two sinks in the vanity area), and a television, table and
chairs, and desk. A small handful of the rooms are equipped
with a bunk bed or day bed and a few have a king-sized bed.
All rooms are equipped with iron and board, hairdryer, and newspaper
delivery.
The lodge also has some suites ranging from the
honeymoon suites (which are equipped with a Jacuzzi with a waterfall
faucet) up to the junior suites which include a living room and
small kitchen area.
Preferred Room Locations
The two room views available include the standard
view which faces the parking lot or other less-sightly parts of
the building and savanna view.
Food and Drink
Animal Kingdom Lodge boasts two nice restaurants,
Boma-Flavors of Africa and Jiko-The Cooking Place. Boma
is a family restaurant with Pan-Pacific, African, Indian, and
English cuisine meshed in a "global fusion" style.
Jiko is the Lodge's more upscale restaurant.
Activities
Swimming in the themed pool, hot tub, and cold
spa are also popular. A nicely stocked arcade can keep the kids
busy. A gift shop is available, too, to buy resort themed
goods as souvenirs.
Disney Transportation
Although a premium resort, Animal Kingdom Lodge
is very secluded in the South West corner of the WDW property,
so it doesn't have monorail service. Bus transportation is currently
the only option.
Other Comments
The savanna is over 30 acres in size, and is populated
with over 200 animals and birds.
