Overview
Caribbean Beach Resort is Disney's first
attempt at a moderately-priced hotel. The rooms at the Caribbean
Beach Resort are typically $50 to $130 less expensive than the rooms
at the premium hotels. This resort is huge, boasting over 2100 rooms
spread out around it's own lagoon. The rooms are located in "villages"
that are themed according to one of several different Caribbean
islands including Aruba, Jamaica, Barbados, Martinique, Trinidad
North, and Trinidad South (the only real difference between the
villages is the colors and minor detailing of the buildings).
Each village has its own quiet pool with a nearby guest laundry
room.
Old Port Royale, the themed food and shopping area,
is located on the eastern side of the lagoon. It includes a food
court, a single sit-down restaurant (Captain's Tavern), a bar, several
shops, an arcade, a marina, and a swimming area that is themed like
an old Spanish fort. A small children's playground is located on
Parrot Cay Island in the middle of the lagoon, and adds to the Caribbean
Island flavor.
The front desk is located at the Customs House, a
building set closer to the main road than the guest buildings themselves.
The Customs House also has bell services, guest services, and an
ATM machine.
The resort's lagoon is open to boats from the marina
at Old Port Royale so, although there are beaches for each village,
you can't swim in the lagoon (you might enjoy the playground with
the kids, or enjoy a nap in a hammock, though).
Around the perimeter of the lagoon is a winding prominade
that you can walk or bike. You can also cut across the lake
at Parrot Cay (an island in the middle of the lagoon roughly equidistant
from Jamaica and Old Port Royale) which boasts a themed children's
play area.
Room Description
Each room at Caribbean Beach Resort has either two
double beds or a single king. The bathrooms are typical of
those found in the moderate resorts, with two sinks located outside
of the bath/lavatory room. You'll also find a table and a
couple of chairs and a coffee maker.
All rooms have exterior entrances and there are no
elevators to the upper floors each each building. Some connecting
rooms are available and semi-handicapped access and non-smoking
rooms can be requested.
Preferred Room Locations
The
buildings that are closest to Old Port Royale are in Martinique
and Trinidad North. Jamaica and Aruba are connected
to Old Port Royale by bridges and a walkway across Parrot Cay, but
it could be a good ten or fifteen minute hike to get there.
The bus routes start either at Martinique or Jamaica
and work clockwise around the lagoon. Either of those villages
is most likely to be the "first stop" for any buses coming
back from the parks.
Food and Drink
Old Port Royale is the site of Captain's Tavern, a
full-service restaurant, and the food court which includes several
fast food options (you have to pay at each one separately, so if
the people you're with have differing opinions about what to eat,
you'll need to split up.
Activities
Old Port Royale's main pool is themed as a Spanish
fortress with "smoking" cannon and a water slide for the
kids. A large internal lake has a marina for sail boating, water
sprites, and other water craft. Parrot Cay Island provides the playground
area for the younger set. Smaller playgrounds are scattered throughout
the resort as well. A well equipped game room is also located at
Old Port Royale.
Disney Transportation
Disney bus transport CBR guests everywhere in WDW.
The resort is so large that an internal bus route is run as well.
Each village has it's own bus stop, so there are several scattered
around the resort.
Other Comments
Just be aware that Caribbean Beach Resort is a sprawling,
huge complex. The way it's set up, with the various villages,
brings the scale back to something that you can adjust to, but if
you're the type of person that likes to take advantage of all of
the facilities a resort has to offer, you'll find yourself putting
some miles on your legs (besides the miles you put on at the theme
parks!)
