Overview
The Contemporary Resort is one of the very
first resort hotels that opened at Walt Disney World back in 1971.
The resort was spectacular back then. It is a showplace of
modern design and efficient urban planning that remains a world-class
hotel and convention center complex even in the new millennium.
Several things make this hotel stand out from more
typical urban hotels. First, a mass transit system, Disney's monorail
to the Magic Kingdom, runs right through the center of the hotel
concourse. Second, the restaurants and shops are dripping with fun.
Third, the marina out back, and the lovely pool area, and the Food
'N' Fun center provide a list of fun activities that the whole family
will enjoy. Last, the view of the Magic Kingdom from the west side
tower rooms is spectacular.
Just a historical tidbit for you trivia fans...The
Contemporary Resort's tower was built as a concrete frame and the
individual rooms were pre-fabricated at a plant several miles away.
After the concrete structure was completed, the rooms were slid
into place like drawers in a dresser. The original plan was
to be able to remove the rooms on a rotating schedule to update
and refresh the furniture, carpet, fixtures, and so on...but the
settling of the structure locked the modular units in place where
they remain to this day.
Room Description
Make sure you realize that although the tall main
building is the most visible part of this resort, most of the rooms
are actually located in the garden wings to the east of the main
building. You have to pay a premium to stay in the tower itself.
The Contemporary Resort has both standard rooms and
suites. The standard rooms are typically equipped with a pair
of queen-sized beds or a king-size bed. They also have a day
bed (so the standard rooms are among the few WDW rooms that can
accommodate five people.)
The resort also has suites that range from simply
a bedroom / sitting room combination to very large, high-end suites
that can accommodate up to twelve.
Preferred Room Locations
The tower rooms, especially those facing the Magic
Kingdom, are the top of the line.
Some
specifics issues regarding room location:
-
Of course, the Tower rooms are closer to the shops,
restaurants, and other facilities located in the main building.
-
The Tower rooms have spectacular view of either
the Magic Kingdom or Bay Lake.
-
The Garden rooms facing Bay Lake also have a nice
of the lake, but at a much lower perspective, of course.
-
The North Garden rooms are closest to the Magic
Kingdom (if you plan to walk over frequently), while the South
Garden rooms are closest to the convention center.
-
The Garden rooms are closest to the marina, pools,
and tennis courts.
-
The concierge rooms are all located on the 14th
floor of the Tower.
-
The "Tower Club" rooms are on the 12th
floor.
Food and Drink
The Contemporary Resort boasts a good number of restaurants
including the award-winning California Grill (on the 15th floor
of the main building), Chef Mickey's Restaurant, and the Concourse
Steakhouse. Snacks are available at the Food and Fun Center as well.
Two full service lounges are on-site to wet the whistle.
Activities
The Contemporary Resort has a nice pool with a small
water slide. Swimming is also available in the lake. Boating, tennis,
volleyball, and a health club can be utilized by guests. WDW's greatest
game room is located at the Food and Fun center. Finally, the shops
at the Contemporary are among the best of all of the resort shops.
Only the Grand Floridian and Yacht and Beach Club Resorts rival
the Contemporary's business district.
Disney Transportation
The Monorail connects the Contemporary with the Magic
Kingdom and TTC (and thereby to EPCOT). Disney buses transport CR
guests everywhere else. Be aware that only the rooms in the main
"Tower" building are particularly convenient to the monorail.
All of the others are quite a hike away.
Other Comments
Be aware that "Tower Club" guests are provided
with a less complete level of service than concierge guests (but
at somewhat less cost).
The concierge service includes access to the concierge
staff and lounge (which provides a place to relax and serves complimentary
snacks throughout the day.) The lounge also serves continental
breakfast, wine and cheese in the early evening, and desserts (produced
by the California grill) in the later evening.
Turn down service is provided for both Tower Club
and concierge guests.
The music for the Magic Kingdom fireworks display
is piped into the California Grill lounge. This is a prime
viewing spot!
