Overview
Coronado Springs Resort is classified as
a moderately priced hotel, but unlike Caribbean beach and Port Orleans,
Coronado Springs includes a convention center. The resort is themed
in a Spanish-influenced, style. The atmosphere is very similar,
actually, to that of Caribbean Beach Resort. There's a strong
"Santa Fe" feeling to the architecture with a nice splash
of "old Mexico" (think Mayans here) thrown in.
Three different types of accommodations surround the
centrally-located lake. Casitas are themed to represent city
dwellings. The ranchos are villas that represent the rural
areas of northern Mexico. The cabanas are similar to accommodations
one would find in the coastal regions of Mexico.
The architectural details really add to the overall
atmosphere of the resort. This might just be the most authentic-feeling
(if there is such a thing) resort at Walt Disney World. Certainly
the courtyards, fountains, plazas, beaches (the cabana side of the
lake is beachfront) and coastline (the casitas and ranchos portions
of the lakefront are rocky) -- not to mention the Mayan pyramid
that caps off the feature pool -- go a long way to setting the stage
for the resort guest.
Room Description
The guest rooms at Coronado Springs Resort are very
similar to those found at Caribbean Beach Resort and Port Orleans.
The two exceptions are the difference in decor, of course, and the
fact that here the rooms have only a single sink. Most of
them are equipped with a pair of double beds (although a handful
of rooms do have king sized beds as an alternative).
Since the resort does cater somewhat to the convention
crowd, the rooms do include coffee makers, hair dryers, iron and
ironing board as well as limited room service.
Preferred Room Locations
Coronado Springs resort is a sprawling resort, again,
much like Caribbean Beach Resort. You won't find any room
that is close to everything, so you'll have to consider those things
that are most important to you as you put together your wish list
for room requests.
You
may wish to refer to the CSR map to determine which building locations
might be best for you:
-
The buildings 1 and 3 (casitas) and 9B (cabanas)
are closest to the main resort buildings where the convention
center, restaurants, front desk, sundries shop, and main bus
stop are located.
-
Buildings 2 and 4 (casitas) wrap around Health
Club and Beauty Salon and the casitas Quiet Pool area.
-
Buildings 4, 7B, 8A, and 8B are pretty good compromise
locations if quiet pool and bus stop proximity are prime considerations.
-
Buildings 5, 8A, and 9B are all close to the feature
pool area.
-
If I had to pick a single building to recommend
based on location, I would go with 9B because it is close to
the main building, the feature pool, the marina, and just a
bit of a walk to the main bus stop.
Food and Drink
The resort's full-service restaurant, "the Maya
Grill" includes meat and seafood grilled specialties.
"Pepper Market", the food court located
at the resort, has an interesting way of operating. When you
enter the establishment, you are provided with a stamp card for
each member of your party. As you make your food and beverage
selections, the card is marked to make note of each item.
You pay for the entire meal at the conclusion (which is nice, because
it means that each member of the group can make their own individual
choices -- without having to pay for their meals independently.)
Note that there is an automatic gratuity added to the bill, even
if the "service" you receive is minimal.
Activities
The feature pool is located at "the dig site"
and features a Mayan pyramid with a cascading waterslide.
It's quite spectacular! Coronado Springs' store is typical
of the moderate resorts. Pushcarts vendors just outside the
store add to the market square theme. A couple of lounges
(one at the pool area) completes the food and beverage services
The resort has more amenities than the other moderate
hotels. Biking, boating, playgrounds, and an arcade are available.
In addition, the resort boasts a health club and a salon.
Disney Transportation
Buses are the only mode of transport for CSR guests.
Although the bus routes are always subject to change,
the current routes seem to take the buses to the stops in this order:
Casitas, Cabanas, Main Building.
Again, the bus routes are always subject to change,
but the buses to and from Downtown Disney currently stop at the
Boardwalk.
Other Comments
Since Coronado Springs is, after all, a convention
hotel, they really do cater to the conventioneers. It's not
unheard of for various parts of the resort ("the dig site",
for example) to be closed off for private parties.
