Overview
Fort Wilderness Campground is a different
kind of Disney Resort experience. At Fort Wilderness, guests can
park their own RV, pitch a tent, stay in a luxurious (though rustic
looking) wilderness home. The resort is more rustic than the hotels,
of course. Showers and rest rooms are provided in comfort stations
that are scattered around the many loops. The smaller numbered loops
(100-500) are located closest to Bay Lake. River Country, Pioneer
Hall, and Crockett's Tavern, the campground's restaurant, are located
up at this northern end of the campgrounds. A riding stable and
several area pools are located around the facility as well.
Site Description
This is a campground, not the Grand Floridian!
You bring your own "room" here, so you can tell me about
it in your trip report, ok? :)
The campsites are all screened from each other so
you won't feel like you're on top of your neighbors. Each
has a paved drive, a picnic table, grill, electricity, and city
water. The vast majority of sites also provide sewer connections.
The last "upgrade" that is available is the "preferred
sites" which also have cable TV connectors. All
of the preferred sites are located in loops 100 - 400, 700, and
1400.
The campgrounds comfort stations include private showers,
restrooms, laundry rooms, phones and ice machines.
Preferred Site Locations
A
quick look at my FWC map tells me that:
-
Loops 100 - 300 are directly adjacent to Bay Lake.
-
Loops 100, 200, 700, and 400 are all closest to
the Fort Wilderness Settlement (where most of the shops, food
services, and River Country are located).
-
Loops 1500 - 2000 are the most secluded (and where
the sites without sewer connections are located).
-
The only area where pets are permitted is in loops
1600 - 1900 so you may want to request or avoid that area as
you see fit.
Food and Drink
One of the main reasons for staying at Fort Wilderness
Campground is to save money during a trip to WDW. Therefore,
one of the common sights, especially at dinnertime, is campers busily
preparing dinner...sometimes on the grill, perhaps on a camp stove,
maybe even in the kitchen of their camper or 5th wheel. Food is
available at the two trading posts right on the campgrounds. Alternatively,
you can also run to Goodings Supermarket at the Crossroads (across
SR 535 as you drive on Hotel Plaza Boulevard) or one of the Publix
Supermarket 192 East and West of WDW.
However, Fort Wilderness does offer food and beverages
at several locations, most of them in the Pioneer Hall complex near
Bay Lake. Crockett's Tavern is now a watering hole only, but Trail's
End remains a cafeteria-style eatery.
Activities
This is probably Fort Wilderness Campground's strong
suit. In addition to the "Hoop Dee Doo Review" dinner
show, Fort Wilderness also plays host to daily evening campfire
programs which include a sing-along and a showing of a Disney film.
Sports (golf, tennis, basketball, horseshoes, tetherball,
volleyball, water skiing, fishing) and other activities (horseback
riding, boating, or a visit to a petting farm) are readily available,
too.
Disney Transportation
Buses provide, not only transportation to the other
WDW locations, but also to the internal locations within the campground.
In fact, vehicular traffic is prohibited within the campgrounds
itself except for entering or exiting the resort. A popular
alternative is the rental of electric golf carts which you can take
care of at the Bike Barn (call ahead - early - if you want a cart,
since they go fast).
The Contemporary Resort, Discovery Island, and the
Magic Kingdom can all be reached via water on boats that depart
frequently from the marina.
