Overview

Fort Wilderness Cabins is a different kind of Disney Resort experience. At Fort Wilderness, guests can park their own RV, pitch a tent, or stay in a luxurious (though rustic looking) wilderness home. The resort is more rustic than the hotels, of course.

River Country, Pioneer Hall, and Crockett's Tavern, the campground's restaurant, are located up at this northern end of the campgrounds. A riding stable and several area pools are located around the facility as well.

Room Description

The  Fort Wilderness Cabins are free standing structures that sleep up to six people on a combination of double and bunk beds.  Inside, the furnishings are themed, so the cabins give a real feeling of being in the western forests.  The bedroom has it's own television and vanity.  There's a second one in the living room that has a VCR, too.  The kitchen includes all of the appliances:  microwave, dishwasher and coffee maker and a dining table that seats six (it's tight, but it can be done).  Of course, the cabin is also fully equipped with a complete bathroom.

Outside, each cabin comes with a wood deck, a charcoal grill and a picnic table.   The nearby campgrounds comfort stations include private showers, restrooms, laundry rooms, phones and ice machines.

Preferred Room Locations

Click to View Fort Wilderness Campground MapAll of the cabins are located in the higher- numbered loops with the newer ones all in the 2700 and 2800 loops.  Unfortunately, all of the cabins are are fairly remote from the Settlement and Meadow.

Food and Drink

One of the main reasons for staying at Fort Wilderness Campground is to save money during a trip to WDW.  Therefore, one of the common sights, especially at dinnertime, is campers busily preparing dinner...sometimes on the grill, perhaps on a camp stove, maybe even in the kitchen of their camper or 5th wheel. Food is available at the two trading posts right on the campgrounds. Alternatively, you can also run to Goodings Supermarket at the Crossroads (across SR 535 as you drive on Hotel Plaza Boulevard) or one of the Publix Supermarket 192 East and West of WDW.

However, Fort Wilderness does offer food and beverages at several locations, most of them in the Pioneer Hall complex near Bay Lake. Crockett's Tavern is now a watering hole only, but Trail's End remains a cafeteria-style eatery.

Activities

This is probably Fort Wilderness Campground's strong suit. In addition to the "Hoop Dee Doo Review" dinner show, Fort Wilderness also plays host to daily evening campfire programs which include a sing-along and a showing of a Disney film.

Sports (golf, tennis, basketball, horseshoes, tetherball, volleyball, water skiing, fishing) and other activities (horseback riding, boating, or a visit to a petting farm) are readily available, too.

Disney Transportation

Buses provide, not only transportation to the other WDW locations, but also to the internal locations within the campground.  In fact, vehicular traffic is prohibited within the campgrounds itself except for entering or exiting the resort.  A popular alternative is the rental of electric golf carts which you can take care of at the Bike Barn (call ahead - early - if you want a cart, since they go fast).

The Contemporary Resort, Discovery Island, and the Magic Kingdom can all be reached via water on boats that depart frequently from the marina.
