Overview

The Polynesian Resort is decorated like the south sea islands of the Pacific ocean. The A-framed central ceremonial house, which encloses the resort offices, shops, and most of it's restaurant options, is filled with lush tropical vegetation, a waterfall, and a feeling that you're really in the pacific region. Each building in the resort shares the same A-frame construction and the rooms are nicely decorated with the same south seas flair, without being obnoxious (you don't feel like Tarzan and Jane when you take your afternoon nap). Outside, there is a small themed "cove" pool, a lovely stretch of white sand beach, a marina, and "luau cove" where Disney's nightly luau extravaganza is held. At night the real magic of the Polynesian Resort comes to life as the many pedestrian walkways are lit by flaming torches and the soft sounds of island music wafts through the air.

The guest rooms are located in a series of buildings, called longhouses, with appropriately island names such as Hawaii, Tahiti, and Fuji.

Room Description

Rooms typically include two queen-size beds, a day bed, an armoire, and a table and chairs.  The only suites are located in the Tonga longhouse and can accommodate up to six people.  The only king-size bed are in the suites.  Note, too, that not all rooms (specifically those located on the second floor of the older longhouses) have balconies.

Two view types are available.  Garden view rooms look out over the resorts landscaped areas and may include a glimpse of a parking lot or other less sightly area.  Water view rooms show off Seven Seas Lagoon or the marina area.  Specific sights (such as the Magic Kingdom) can never be guaranteed.

All of the concierge rooms are located in the Hawaii and Tonga longhouses.  The service includes continental breakfast, a snack service in the afternoon, and desserts in the evening.  Concierge service also includes exclusive use of the concierge lounges (one located in the Hawaii longhouse, the other in the Great Ceremonial House).

Preferred Room Locations

The Great Ceremonial House is the location of almost all of the central resort facilities including the monorail station and bus stop and the restaurants.  The longhouses located closest to the Great Ceremonial House are Tonga, Niue, and Rarotonga.

The Tahiti and Rapa Nui longhouses are closest to the TicketClick to View Polynesian Resort Map & Transportation Center, which is located just East of the Polynesian Resort.

Samoa, Hawaii, Tokelau, Rarotonga and Niue are all close to the largest (unthemed) pool. Samoa and Hawaii are also directly adjacent to the grotto pool.

The water view rooms in Hawaii and Tahiti give the best views of the Magic Kingdom.

Food and Drink

Restaurants at the Polynesian include Ohana, where Polynesian all-you-can-eat feasts are served. Kona Cafe is an upscale coffee shop with a very nice menu for all meals.   Captain Cook's snack shop provides a place to acquire lighter faire.

Activities

Swimming in the pools (one of which is themed as a South Seas lava pool) and boating out of the Polynesian's extensive marina highlight the activities here. This resort also has several shops for the trinket hunter and the serious shopper.

Luau Cove, located at the Western end of the resort property, is the site of nightly luau dinner shows. Mickey's Tropical Revue and the Polynesian Luau are fun ways to spend a couple hours in the evening.

Disney Transportation

The Polynesian Resort is one of the few "Monorail Hotels". That means that the transportation to the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT are via that mode of transportation. Buses provide service to the Disney / MGM Studios and the other WDW attractions. Water taxis can be taken to the Magic Kingdom.

Other Comments

Special events that can be seen from the Polynesian Resort include:

Views of the Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electrical Water Pageant from the beach or boat dock (or your own room if you're lucky enough to have a view).  Check with guest services for showtimes.

The ladybug release is held weekly.  Ladybugs are used all over WDW as a means of natural insect control.

There is a daily torch lighting ceremony, too, that includes drums, chants, and a storyteller presentation.
