Disney World to Build Giant New Resort in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co.'s (NYSE:DIS - news) sprawling Walt Disney World vacation complex will expand as the company develops a 5,760-room, economy-style resort near its Disney-MGM Studios theme park, Disney World said Wednesday.

Like the other hotels at Disney World, the new resort will have a theme. Its 20 buildings will come in pairs, with each twosome themed to depict different stages of American popular culture in the 20th century. For example, a giant jukebox will represent the 1950s.

Work crews have begun clearing land. The project will be built in two phases, with the first 2,880 rooms opening in 2002.

Rooms at the new hotel will be priced at about the same level as its lower-end All-Star Resorts, currently at $74 to $104 per room, per night.
