Art Nouveau was an artistic style used in furniture, jewelry, decoration, illustrations and architecture that began in Western Europe in the 1880s.  It's innovative and exaggerated use of flowing lines and curves, exciting colors and symbolic forms gave it the name "new art", though it was reminiscent of early Gothic, Celtic, Japanese and Roman styles.  Artists used the nouveau style in the creation of combs, brooches, posters, Tiffany stain glass, vases and dishes.  Serious devotees of the movement saw it grow out of the need for a cultural style in the background of the industrial revolution.  With items becoming manufactured in mass, artists felt there needed to be a return to medieval craftsmanship.  Art nouveau found favor especially among the cultural elite, who kept the movement alive with its wealth.  Art nouveau's favorite subjects were usually women and nature, especially peacocks, dragonflies and moths.  The movement collapsed under fire by critics between World War I until 1950, though a resurgence occurred in the psychedelic styles of the 1960s.
