Date of Meal:

September, 1998;  October, 1996; November, 1995

Number of Guests at Your Table:

October, 1996: 4

November, 1995:  4

Approximate Cost:

September, 1998:  Don't ask for the "largest steak" if you're on a budget (read the "other comments" below for details).

October, 1996: Our combined bills came to less than $66 for steak and prime rib. Not bad for four people.

November, 1995:  About $85 (but we were on the Food 'n' Fun program on that trip)

Priority Seating / Reservations Comments:

With priority seating, the wait is usually short (within 5 or 10 minutes).  Without it, you may wait awhile - especially in the hour and a half just after the Magic Kingdom closes, when the troops are returning from the park.

Time of Wait:

Generally only five or ten minutes, but in November, 1995 we waited 35 minutes, without priority seating.

Food Review:

September, 1998:  We both ordered the "City Slicker" New York strip, they were very good.

October, 1996: Barb and I both had the New York strip while Mom and Dad both ordered the Prime Rib. The rolls and salad that came with dinner were very good.

November, 1995:  For our appetizers, Mike ordered "scallop 'n' oyster night-night", which translates into oysters and scallops wrapped in bacon and deep-fried ($4.95). I had a bowl of crab soup ($3.95) and Barb and Stacey each ordered the chicken vegetable soup ($2.50 ea).  For dinner, Barb and I both ordered New York Strips. I asked for the biggest, thickest steak they had, and I think I got it! ($14.95 ea). Mike ordered fried catfish ($10.95). Stacey had the Louisiana light selection, a stuffed chicken and mushroom dish ($12.95).  Then came desert. Mike and Stacey both had carrot cake ($2.95 ea), Barb had a fudge brownie ($1.50), and I had pecan pie ($2.95). You might disagree with me on this one, but I thought the pie had far too many pecans in it. There was hardly any of the sweet, gooey stuff that I love so much in a pecan pie. Nuts. Literally.

Service Review:

The best feature of this restaurant is the top-notch service. It is simply excellent -- and consistently so over several years.

September, 1998:   The service at Boatwright's is always great and you're always provided with carafes of  beverage refills so you always have what you need at your fingertips.  As usual, our waitress brought us carafes of water and iced tea, so we never ran out of beverages. Boatwright's reputation for value and good service was maintained

November, 1995:  During the course of our meal, we had five different people bring us food or beverages of one sort or another. I asked for water with my meal...and got mugs full for everyone, and a carafe more besides. We also got extra carafes of each of the other beverages we ordered. As more items were brought to us, our table became so filled with food and drink that we had to put some items on the floor. At one time the salad bowl, bread basket, water and other beverage carafes and a few other items were down there for safe keeping.

Atmosphere Review:

Clearly, this is the place where boats are made...I assume to carry passengers and goods up and down the mighty Sassougula river. Hanging from the ceiling of the main seating floor is a half-completed scow of some kind. Not very large, but the point is made. Various wood working tools are mounted from the walls, too. The theme might make you think the atmosphere is too mechanical or factory-like. Actually, though, the wooden floors, large fireplace, and small tables make this a very comfortable place to have a meal. The food is American, with a slightly southern influence. Catfish, chicken, steak, and so on highlight the menu. I didn't like the pecan pie...too many pecans and too little pie.

Other Comments:

Boatwright's is consistently very good and highly recommended.

September, 1998:  We both ordered the "City Slicker" New York strip and I asked for the "largest steak you can find me."   When my meal was delivered, I was given two smaller ones to make up a really large amount of meat.  The only disappointment in the meal came when I get back to OKWR later in the evening and discovered that I had been charged for the second steak.  Last year, when I made the same "largest steak you can find me" request, I was indeed given a nice sized steak, but it didn't cost me anything.  (I didn't notice the extra charge until we got back to the room, or I would have had them take it off...asking for the biggest steak doesn't tell them they can increase the price without my approval.)   Even so, we had a very nice meal...just don't ask for the "largest steak" if you're on a budget.
