  • A terrorism scare: In September 2001, shortly after the 9/11 attacks, there was a nationwide scare after powdered anthrax was found in several enveloped mailed inside the United States. As a result, there was a general uneasiness about "white powders" and false alarms weren't uncommon. In response, for a short period the powdered sugar used on funnel cakes was replaced by a liquid sugar that was squirted on. The resulting sodden mess was not well received and powdered sugar was quickly restored.
