Fantasyland

Fantasyland is a place of imagination. Particularly the imagination of Disney's feature animators over the years. Of the areas nine attractions, only "it's a small world" is an original feat of imagination with the rest being based on Disney's animated movies.

There's nothing wrong with that, though, and it can be argued that the land achieves the perfect balance between fun for adults and fun for children. Truly embodies Walt Disney's ideal of creating a place for families to have fun together. Starting with Cinderella's Castle, the real world embodiment of a fairy tale castle children can slip themselves into any of a half dozen cherished films.

At the D23 exposition in August 2009, a massive expansion of Fantasyland was announced with the land incorporating much of the space that is now Mickey's Toontown Fair. It will include new interactive Princess-themed attractions, an expanded version of Disneyland Pixie Hollow, moving and expanding Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and two new dining locations.

Specific dates for closing existing attractions and opening new ones are not yet known but much of this should be complete in 2012 with Pixie Hollow coming in 2013.

History and Trivia - Hide Section
  • At this location: Fantasyland is one the Magic Kingdom's original lands, and while it could be argued that it's size hasn't technically changed, the removal of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea lagoon makes it seem smaller.
  • The Land's History: Fantasyland opened with 11 attractions, seven of which still exist. The four that have disappeared over the years are 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (now paved over), Mr. Toad's Wild Ride (now The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh), Mickey Mouse Revue (now Mickey's PhilharMagic), and the Skyway to Tomorrowland (now simply gone).

1994 was a time of change for Fantasyland as the area was generally spruced up and reorganized. In addition to 20,000 Leagues closing, Snow White's Scary Adventures was significantly updated and entirely new Dumbo the Flying Elephant was built from scratch. Several stores and restaurants were consolidated, moved, or changed.
