Fantasyland is a place of imagination. Particularly the imagination of Disney's feature animators over the years. Of the area's attractions, only "it's a small world" is an original feat of imagination with the rest being based on Disney's animated movies.
There's nothing wrong with that, though, and it can be argued that the land achieves the perfect balance between fun for adults and fun for children; it truly embodies Walt Disney's ideal of creating a place for families to have fun together. Starting with Cinderella's Castle, the real world embodiment of a fairy tale castle children can slip themselves into any of a half dozen cherished films.
A massive expansion of Fantasyland, announced in 2009, is still underway. Storybook Circus has taken over the area once inhabited by Mickey's Toontown Fair, creating a circu atmosphere centered around the moved and expanded Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction. In addition, the princesses have taken up residence there with the addition of a Little Mermaid attraction, Ariel meet-and-greet area, Belle's village, and the new Be Our Guest restaurant (the only place inside the Magic Kingdom where you can have alcoholic beverages with a meal).
