|New Disneyland Pins, "Million Dollar Mickey" - Take 2, More! - 8/24/01|
With the Walt Disney World pin event series finally concluded, pin traders can look to the Disneyland Resort for the next batch of excitement. Merchants from the resort were on hand at the Pin Celebration two weeks ago, with designs and samples of this fall's releases.
The Mickey- and- Minnie-in- balloon pin debuted this week. Tink continues the tradition of great Tinkerbell pins from Disneyland. Unfortunately, she and the Bowling pin are still no-shows.
WDW introduced Mickey's Award Club pins, but Disneyland has improved on the idea by creating an award certificate and reward pin to complete the set. Both Grandparent's Day and back- to- school pins are expected in September.
The 2001 Halloween pins look to be even more popular than the nine released last year.
A new series, called "Memorable Scenes," is a follow-up to the "Memorable Moments" group of movie-inspired pins released this year and last.
As such a pretty attraction, "it's a small world" and seems to inspire quite a lot of artwork. This pin is much prettier than last year's edition. Most hinged pins from Tokyo Disneyland use small magnets to keep the pin closed when worn. I'm glad to see that Disneyland incorporated this detail into its design.
Something to look forward to this winter - a pretty Happy Holidays pin with the Disneyland castle inside a holly wreath. If we're lucky, this might even be a light-up pin.
The Disneyland pin team have a few other surprises in store for pin collectors this fall. The team will introduce a new series of character lanyards starting in September. These lanyards will have a character name embroidered down one side. A medallion featuring that character will hang from the end. So far, each of the Fab 5 will have their own lanyard.
Annual Passholders have two exclusive items waiting for them this weekend. An Annual Passholder lanyard with a Mickey medallion will be available at in Disneyland at the Showcase, and in DCA at Treasures in Paradise. There will also be a new AP- exclusive, limited edition Disney's Electrical Parade "Welcome Home" pin available at Treasures in Paradise. The edition size is 4800 units, and the pin itself is pretty awesome.
In case you were one of the people who went looking for the solid gold Mickey statue last week only to find it missing, join the crowd. Last week, an enthusiastic cast member told quite a few guests, including myself, that the "Million Dollar Mickey" would be on display at the World of Disney store this past weekend. Unfortunately, someone had the dates scrambled. A kind soul sent me correct information, and a really great photo!
"Celebration Mickey... 100 Golden Years of Magic" is a one-of- a- kind 24 karat gold sculpture of Mickey that is estimated to be worth one million dollars, and is set to be auctioned off at the 2001 Disneyana Convention. Guests and cast members will have a chance to get a sneak peak on August 25 and 26, and September 1 and 2 at World of Disney in Downtown Disney during normal store hours.
