|Walt Disney Classics Collection Event, Super Soap Weekends|
Fans of TV soap operas and the Walt Disney Classics Collection alike have a reason to look forward to April. Details of the ABC Super Soap Weekends, and the Celebration of Walt Disney Classics Collection events are provided below.
Time is running out, so be sure to double-check the reservation deadlines!
"Who wants to be a soap star?" For three weekends in April, that will be a more pressing question than Regis Philbin's trademark phrase, as the popular "ABC Super Soap Weekends" move from Disney-MGM Studios to Disney's California Adventure park. [Read about the 2001 event in this MousePlanet column.]
A different ABC soap will be featured at each of the three weekend celebrations. All My Children kicks off the event on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, One Life to Live runs through April 13 and 14, while General Hospital and Port Charles close the event on April 20 and 21. See the sidebar (right) for a partial list of stars scheduled to attend.
In the style of true soap- opera intrigue, a breaking storyline in Port Charles (the death of a major character) prohibits Disney from announcing the names of the show's cast who are scheduled to appear.
The public has a host of opportunities to meet and greet their favorite stars throughout the events. Walt Willey from All My Children hosts "Casting Call," where lucky fans win the opportunity to read a scene live with an ABC soap star. Linda Dano from One Life to Live moderates a question- and- answer session, where fans can get a behind- the-scenes glimpse into the lives of their favorite actors. During a special edition of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire-Play It," stars compete to win prizes for their "cheering section" in the audience.
Of course, no event would be complete without merchandise. While details are very hush hush, look for shirts, pins, hats, and even props from actual shows.
True-blue fans might want to treat themselves to a full weekend experience by booking one of the "ABC Super Soap Weekends" packages. These includes a one-night hotel stay at a Disneyland Resort hotel, a two-day DCA ticket, a special buffet breakfast with the stars at ABC Soap Opera Bistro (a true character breakfast!), and an ABC soap opera commemorative gift. Packages are limited to just 200 people, giving you a special opportunity to meet the stars.
Packages range from $240 at Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel to $295 at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel single occupancy; call for additional rates. Annual Passholders save about $40 if they do not need park admission. For more event information or to make your reservations, call (800) 450-4002.
The fourth "Celebration of Walt Disney Classics Collection" makes its first visit to the West Coast April 19 through 21. The annual event draws collectors from around the world. If you are at all curious about bigger events like the Official Disneyana Conventions, this weekend should give you a good taste of what the collectors' events are all about.
The Walt Disney Classics Collection is a collection of sculptures based on Disney film animation. In the press release announcing the move to California, the managing director of the Walt Disney Classics Collection explained:
Beginning in 1923 the "Golden State" has been the home of The Walt Disney Company and ever since has been the source of all things Disney - from films, TV productions, theme parks, etc. and this is why "Made in California" is the logical choice for the theme of our 2002 event.
Highlights of the three-day event include the opportunity to purchase limited edition collectibles and art, as well as event- logo merchandise. Most of these pieces were created especially for this event, or have special event backstamps. As with recent events, the limited edition merchandise will be allocated using the Random Selection Process, to reduce the time you stand in line.
There will be presentations by guests like Imagineer Tony Baxter and artist Sam Mc Kim, plus a hands-on look at how your art classic is painted. Guests will participate in a first- of- its- kind tour of the Walt Disney Studios, followed by a presentation by entertainment legend Leonard Maltin and a barbecue at the Disney Studio Commissary. Unlike some conventions where participants must choose between events, everyone gets to attend every session. And the opening and closing night parties are not to be missed, when you can rub elbows with Disney artists and celebrities.
Full details of the event as well as photos of some of the offerings are listed below. Although information about the "Disneyana Mystery" mini- convention scheduled for August at Walt Disney World are not yet available, its planners may be hard-pressed to top the excitement of this Walt Disney Classics Collection event.
Disney fans who have never even heard of the Walt Disney Classics Collection should find the presentations, classes and events alone worth the cost of admission. If you regretted skipping the 2001 Official Disneyana Convention, the April Walt Disney Classics Collection event may be your chance to make it up to yourself.
Tickets to the event are $495, and include all events and sessions. You must act fast, especially if you are interested in the limited edition merchandise. To be eligible for the first Random Selection Process drawing, your form must be faxed by Friday, March 15. For questions, or to make reservations, contact Walt Disney Event Services at (407) 827-7600. I'll see you there!
