|Haunted Mansion Holiday II: A Brief Report - 10/4/02|
|We will have complete coverage of
the 2002 Nightmare Before Christmas overlay of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion,
as well as the merchandise special event, coming soon. Until then, here
are some quick photos to whet your appetite, and some information for those
coming to shop this weekend.
The Disney Gallery has been transformed into a Haunted Mansion exhibit, complete with new artwork, new displays and new merchandise. The groundskeeper from the Haunted Mansion has taken up temporary residence inside the entrance of the Gallery (above), and is visible from the Pirates of the Caribbean bridge below.
The Gallery has a "Nightmare" room, a "Mansion" room, and a merchandise room. The Print on Demand system has also been updated with 100 new Haunted Mansion and Nightmare images, as well as two new paper sizes. Remember the tarot cards from the s┌ance room last year? You can now print them out and take them home with you.
The new merchandise ranges from fair to fantastic. In addition to the great Print on Demand images, you can find everything from $6 key chains to $4000 original paintings. This new Haunted Mansion Holiday woven shirt is among my favorite items.
Le Bat en Rouge has opened, and is filled with Nightmare merchandise. Some of the core Disneyland-specific merchandise has been delayed by the West Coast port lockout, so much of the merchandise currently in the store is generic licensed product that you can find at your local mall.
Among the Disneyland items are a great note card set, a matching mug, Jack antenna toppers, and a new T-shirt and sweatshirt group. A snow globe, a Sandy Claws "Big Fig" statue, and more are still expected. And yes, Virginia, there are pins. Lots of pins. More on that later in this article.
The merchandise event was very similar to the previous year, with a few scheduling changes made to accommodate the larger crowd. Those who had purchased the dinner package were divided into two seatings, and visitors saw the Haunted Mansion in three assigned groups. Everyone gathered at the Fantasyland Theater for the panel discussion.
Frank Thompson was again picked as the moderator for the panel discussion, which featured Catherine O'Hara, the voice of Sally; Glenn Shadex, the voice of the Mayor; Randy Crenshaw, the voice of Behemoth and other characters, and Kerry Katz, the voice of the Monster Under the Stairs and other characters.
OK, so what about the ride? There are very few changes between last year's and this. For a scene-by-scene photo tour, check out Sue Kruse's two tours from last year via the links in the sidebar to the right.
The most noticeable difference is in the music. The "Grim Grinning Ghosts" theme has been replaced with new tracks by Danny Elfman, and a new batch of "Scarols." Reaction to the change is mixed. Some fans love the new soundtrack, while others miss last year's version.
The other major change is the scene in the loading area, where an "Advent" calendar of gift boxes has been piled against the wall. One box will be opened each of the 13 weeks the ride will be open, revealing a new addition to the Haunted Mansion Holiday. Based on the promotional spiel given at the start of the panel discussion, it sounds as if each week will feature a different resident of Halloweentown.
Of course, there will also be a pin released each Sunday for those 13 weeks to celebrate. While I cringe at the thought of yet another weeks-long series of pin releases, I have to applaud the special offer announced today. This Sunday only, customers can order the entire set of 13 pins in advance, and have them mailed to them at the end of the promotion. All of the details are listed below, so be sure to check for the fine print and shipping fees. This is a wonderful idea, and I think it will go a long way towards making the customers feel less manipulated.
13 Weeks of 13 Treats
This season Jack has brought his holiday calendar to the Haunted Mansion. The old style advent calendar is made of a giant stack of gifts wrapped in nightmarish paper. Each Sunday, from October 6 - December 29, a gift will open, revealing one of Jack's spooky surprises. During this period, Guests visiting Le Bat en Rouge in New Orleans Square and Premiere Shop in Tomorrowland will find a few more surprises waiting for them. See below for details.
