EXPANSION PLANS TAKE CENTER STAGE AS THE DISNEYLAND RESORT ANNOUNCES A THIRD NEW THEME PARK, DISNEY'S HOMELAND ADVENTURE ANAHEIM, CA, April 1, 2002 - Plans for a new addition to the DISNEYLAND® Resort in Anaheim, California, were formally unveiled by Cynthia Harriss, President of the DISNEYLAND Resort, during an early morning ceremony in celebration of DISNEY'S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE'S first-ever full-price admission ticket being sold. Harriss was joined by Barry Braverman, Senior Vice President and Executive Producer, Walt Disney Imagineering, as well as Paul Pressler, Senior Vice President of Imagineering plus Theme Parks and Resorts, to welcome the unsuspecting guests in the Golden Gateway entrance plaza of DISNEY'S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE. The ceremony marked the first time a non-discount or non-complimentary ticket was used by a visitor to enter DISNEY'S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE which has been confused by some guests with the rest of the DISNEYLAND Resort expansion, which included Disney's Grand Californian Hotel® and the DOWNTOWN DISNEY® District of never ending restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. "Our cast has faced unusual challenges with this park," Harriss noted. "But we have continued to offer what guests have traveled here to find - shopping and dining, more shopping and dining and even more shopping and dining.* Plus a few exciting adventures for kids of some ages. We deem it a great privilege to offer this haven of, um, err... happiness. This shall always be our most, um, err... treasured, yes that's it, treasured, undertaking." Harriss observed that continuing growth has been a major theme during the first year in the life of the DISNEYLAND RESORT. "Today," Harriss continued, "it's my special privilege to announce the addition of an even more exciting brand new third theme park. Scheduled to debut in 2004 is DISNEY'S HOMELAND ADVENTURE PARK. We're tremendously excited about this creative addition. Braverman, who had been involved in the development of DISNEY'S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE since its earliest concept stages, acknowledged the work of everyone at the DISNEYLAND Resort and Walt Disney Imagineering on this new venture, as well as not really focusing on the input of most visitors to the last new park. "There is an amazing amount of executives behind everything we do," he said. "And thanks to our teamwork, this first year's been filled with, well, it has been filled with quite a lot of... well..." "EXCITEMENT!" Paul Pressler chimed in. "That's it, that's the word we're looking for, EXCITEMENT!" Braverman cheered the crowd on also, "That's it, EXCITEMENT!" Braverman marked the occasion of a first ever full-price ticket sale by sharing some details of the upcoming DISNEY'S HOMELAND ADVENTURE PARK. DISNEY'S FRONTYARD ADVENTURELAND will be the first thing a visitor sees arriving at the new park, and will be a part of the Disney Youth Education Series (Y.E.S.) at the DISNEYLAND Resort, where visitors will first embark on a thought-provoking, two-hour session in a magical environment. "DISNEY'S TORO STORY" (a history lesson) takes guests on a walking tour through a meticulously themed actual sized front yard which pays tribute to the magic of a well manicured lawn and garden through three themed areas: DISNEY'S FRONT LAWN, DISNEY'S COMPOST HEAP and DISNEY'S CONCRETE DRIVEWAY. (DISNEY'S ROSE GARDEN will be included in a later expansion phase.) New attractions in DISNEY'S FRONTYARD ADVENTURELAND are being designed for the enjoyment of parents as well as children. They will include:
"We have an entire area dedicated to the courageous spirit of leaf blowers," said Joanna Melgin, director of DISNEYLAND Resort & Park Event Sales & Services in Southern California. "Youngsters will find blowing around grass clippings and leaves inspiring and fun, all while helping Disney keep operating costs in check - which of course maintains admission pricing at levels comparable to the other two theme parks." Echoing this sentiment is Anaheim City School District Superintendent Wanda Berry who said, "Leaf blowing aligns perfectly with our own educational program and our local and state educational standards. The excitement of leaning skills that will enable our students to be able to gain employment in California is a wonderful reinforcement of what we are teaching in the classroom." Also a part of DISNEY'S FRONTYARD ADVENTURELAND, is DISNEY'S FRONT PORCH™, a relaxing wood-decked area featuring two exciting new attractions, DISNEY'S PORCH SWING™ and DISNEY'S FLOWER BOX™. (Both attractions will feature Disney's new FASTPASS™ technology, so waits will be at a minimum.) Gaily themed merchandise and food carts are placed everywhere through this area (as well as the rest of the park) for guest convenience. (Shade will be provided at a future undetermined date.) DISNEY'S BACKYARD ADVENTURELAND is right next door. "Imagine stepping into a place where garden hoses, pebbles and blades of grass take on normal proportions," Braverman said. "It's a place where abandoned umbrellas become circus tents and discarded boxes can be made into rides. Yes, that can be your very own child on a riding mower! I was inspired to create this actual sized attraction by a visit to my own backyard, where a rusty swingset provided endless hours of fun for children." Braverman continued, "The plain, every day, simple values these classic American archetypes provide the children of today with comforting and familiar environments. With great pride I can say that with DISNEY'S BACKYARD ADVENTURELAND we can offer the equivalent of comfort food in a jungle gym." Other icons visitors may see along the way: At the area's entrance, the 50-foot tall DISNEY'S SLIDING GLASS DOOR™; The stark architecture of DISNEY'S GARDEN SHED™, which inside depicts the fine assortment of lawn equipment and tools the TORO COMPANY makes; and the 110-foot DISNEY'S BACK FENCE™. "The fence will be made entirely of tile," Braverman adds, "the knotholes especially are a real bitch to replicate." The centerpiece of the new DISNEY'S HOMELAND ADVENTURE PARK of course will be DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR. Ruthless attention to detail (plus a little Disney magic) by a team of Imagineers will turn this entertainment area into an exciting theatrical experience. "Think Cirque du Soleil meets the mall" says Entertainment honcho Anne Hamburger. Hamburger continued, "DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR is a place where one live show is hidden in a row of 14 movie theaters. Guests will thrill to the challenge of finding the one live entertainment offering among the many movies Paul Pressler himself personally produced for this new multiplex area. Paul's vision of replacing rides with films is only one example of the innovation he has pioneered in theme park design at Disney," Hamburger said, "His axiom of 'less for more' is a new mantra now espoused by all the business units at the Walt Disney Company." One of the many films a visitor will encounter at DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR is the 20-minute epic, "Golden Arches," epitomizing the hopes, dreams and hard work of the minimum wage earners who shaped the fast food industry into what it is today. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg as the character, "Frenchy Fry," the picture chronicles both the minimum wager earner's experience and the glittering beginnings of the McDonalds fast food empire. Dramatic moments include the first golden arches built in California billions of burgers ago; and the current success of clustering of fast food brands into one easy-to-access drive-through location. In the area outside and in front of DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR popular Disney characters will be making new kinds of in-person appearances known as "Cloy-mosphere," in which they not only greet park guests but endlessly cajole some of them, most times just short of creating a major confrontation. In their "Cloy-mosphere" shows and sketches, Disney characters will be seen pursuing their own agendas of annoying English language impaired visitors, and often inviting really hyperactive children (fresh off a large Coke and a churro) to play along with them. "Cloy-mosphere" will include some original and unusual opportunities for park guests to take part in interactive character adventures, ranging from a full-scale "Yank Grandma's sun hat off" show starring Goofy, to encounters with a very agitated Donald Duck running away at full speed from Asian tour groups along with Minnie Mouse. Some guests will be selected as "extras" in this funfest, as the characters crawl over them to the nearest exit to avoid being mobbed.
Other character encounters in DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR may be more casual. Don't be surprised if you get drawn into a conversation with one of the bums hanging out in front of DISNEY'S 7-ELEVEN, or with a doughnut-breath policeman at the DISNEY'S WINCHELL'S DOUGHNUTS. You may even encounter Beauty and the Beast's Belle pumping gas at DISNEY'S ARCO STATION. Chip and Dale may be found wreaking fun and mayhem in DISNEY'S TERMINX PEST ADVENTURE. And let's not forget DISNEY'S DRY CLEANING MYSTERY, where the Cheshire Cat will present you with a different item of clothing at the end of your adventure than you originally gave him at the beginning. With the addition of these "Cloy-mosphere" shows and encounters at DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR, young and old park guests will have more opportunities than ever to meet popular Disney characters in new settings. In fact, if a guest were to see all the "Cloy-mosphere" experiences at DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR, it would take a half hour. Added to other DISNEY'S STRIP MALL NEXT DOOR entertainment presentations like "DISNEY'S OH MY, IS THAT REALLY A PARADE?," and the many street performers, the total would come to, well almost an hour! The DISNEYLAND Resort features two (and soon to be three) theme parks - DISNEYLAND park, "The Happiest Place on Earth," and DISNEY'S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE park along with the DOWNTOWN DISNEY District - a public esplanade of dining, shopping and family entertainment. Hotels include the luxurious 751-room Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, the 502-room Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel, and the 990-room Disneyland Hotel.
