Update for July 18 24, 2005Go directly to: News & Views | Refurbishment/Attraction Closures | Park Events | Discounts/Promotions | Park Hours | Events/Entertainment ScheduleNews and ViewsGirl suffers cardiac arrest after riding Tower of Terror; ride not faultedSixteen-year-old Leanna Deacon of Kibworth, Leicester in the United Kingdom, fell ill and was hospitalized last Tuesday after riding the Tower of Terror attraction at the Disney-MGM Studios park. After riding the attraction, the girl complained of a headache. Her mother, June, who was accompanying her, took her back inside to sit down. June Deacon approached Disney Merchandise Manager Howard Rutkowitz to ask if there was a place to sit down. Rutkowitz, noting that the girl looked flushed and disoriented, led them to a bench and offered to call paramedics and bring Leanna some water. She accepted the water but asked that he not call the paramedics. When he returned with the water, he again asked about calling paramedics, and this time the mother agreed. While on the phone with the 911 operator, Rutkowitz reported that the girl was shaking very badly and clinging to her mother. He later told investigators from the sheriff's department that he also saw her dry heave twice, which was confirmed by another Disney employee. Reedy Creek Emergency Services paramedics arrived within five minutes. The girl had been complaining that her head hurt, but became unresponsive to questions during a conversation with the paramedics. She was taken backstage on a stretcher and taken via ambulance to Florida Hospital Celebration Health. Reports indicate that the girl suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance but was brought back by the paramedics. After being examined at Celebration Hospital, a CAT scan indicated bleeding on the girl's brain, and she was rushed into emergency surgery. She reportedly also suffered several cardiac arrests during the surgery. She was later flown via helicopter to Florida Hospital Orlando, where she remains in critical condition. Leanna Deacon, who is athletic and very active, was in good health, but had been complaining of headaches and leg cramps for several days, according to the incident report from the Orange County Sheriff's Office. She had also been on the Tower of Terror attraction many times earlier in the week with no ill effects. An on-ride photograph provided to the investigators by Rutkowitz showed Leanna Deacon smiling as she rode the attraction. Examination of the elevator car ridden by the Deacons showed that, while there were some minor malfunctions in the car that morning, the sheriff's incident report states that a Disney maintenance worked indicated that the faults with Vehicle 3 were 'in no way a safety concern or could in no way cause injury.' Disney took the unusual step of inviting the Florida Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection to accompany them as they examined the attraction to determine whether it was safe to reopen. The Tower of Terror did, in fact, reopen on Wednesday morning. Preliminary reports indicate that the cardiac arrest may have been due to an undetected aneurism that ruptured, causing a hemorrhage in Leanna's brain; however, this has not been confirmed at press time. The girl remains in critical condition at Florida Hospital Orlando. This incident comes less than a month after four-year-old Daudi Bamuwamye died after riding Mission: Space. Autopsy results on the boy are expected in September. Disney resort guests get easier dining reservationsDining reservations just got a new twist. As of this morning, when guests staying at Disney-owned and -operated resorts (the Swan, Dolphin and Shades of Green are not included) reach their 90-day booking window for the beginning of their trip, they may now make reservations for ten days' worth of Advance Dining Reservations. The dining agent will confirm your hotel reservation before making the dining reservations. Those not staying at Disney resorts will need to continue making reservations on a rolling 90-day basis. This policy also extends to other experiences reserved through WDW Dining, 407-WDW-DINE (407-939-3463), such as the Pirate Cruise and Wonderland Tea Party at the Grand Floridian. Apparently, the new policy will not be opening all reservations for a given restaurant for early booking, however. A sliding percentage of seats will be made available for early booking, with fewer seats opening up for the more popular restaurants. This means that very few seats will be opened up for the Princess character meals at Cinderella's Royal Table and Restaurant Akershus. However, it will give resort guests an additional chance to snag a reservation, first at their 90-day-plus-ten window, then again when the rest of the reservations open up at 90 days out. While the tough-to-get seats will remain difficult, what the policy does is allow resort guests to make all of their reservations with one call (with the possible exception of high-demand seats), lowering the number of required long-distance calls. While not quite back to the old days of "only resort guests can make advance reservations," Disney has given guests one more incentive to stay on-property. Two-a-day workouts will be held most days from July 29 through August 16. Single practices will be held on August 6 and 17. There will be a brief walk-through on August 11 and no practices August 12 and 13, as the team will be heading to Nashville for a pre-season game against the Tennessee Titans. All practice sessions are open and free of charge. Most practices will run about two hours, though afternoon special teams practices on August 1, 4 and 8 will run about one hour. Ears to the groundIn what appears to be a continuation of CEO-elect Robert Iger's attempt to focus attention on cast members as the company's greatest asset, a new window will be unveiled this morning on Main Street U.S.A. honoring the entire cast of the Walt Disney World Resort, past and present. The window for the "Magic Kingdom Casting Agency" will go up near the Center Street expansion of the Emporium (Emporium Gallery). The Main Street Train Station has begun a lengthy rehab that will run through the middle of December. Guests will still be able to board the train at the station, though the entrance and exit may be relocated during the work. The area surrounding the locker rental stand will be inaccessible due to renovations that are rumored to be moving stroller rentals into that location. The station is also slated to receive new glass, canopies, paint and so forth. The Magic Kingdom is standing down from red alert, dropping the Carousel of Progress, Hall of Presidents, Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management and Liberty Square Riverboat from evening Extra Magic Hours. Other recent additions will be remaining for the time being. The large tree is taking shape at Pooh's Playful Spot, which is still scheduled to open in September; however, the vast majority of the former lagoon and show building area remains empty awaiting two as-yet unannounced future projects. The remaining space is large enough for an attraction about the size of a Fantasyland dark ride and another attraction around the size of Haunted Mansion. In remembrance of the 28th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death on August 16, Pleasure Island becomes Elvis Island the weekend of August 18-20. El Pirata y El Perico Restaurante opens Mondays through Wednesdays for the near term. The Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station has closed again. There is no return date for that location. There will be 12:30 a.m. showings of the SpectroMagic parade tonight and Friday during evening Extra Magic Hours. The commemorative Coke bottles for Disneyland's 50th anniversary (link) have made their way to Walt Disney World.
