| The
Mummy Returns Chamber of Doom ...and more Continued Of course the pleasant fellow shown below also makes a few more visits as you wander the upcoming maze.
Just before you enter the maze, you can torment the others already inside by popping a skeleton up on them, blasting them with air or squirting them with some water. (If you have a camera with you - you may want to stow it until after the maze is completed - as it may get squirted, and it is really too dark inside to get good photos.)
Once inside the maze - it's a pretty typical spook house kind of affair - things and people jump out at you while you wander around dimly lit hallways. We couldn't get any decent shots inside - but Universal has kindly provided the publicity photo below to help give you an idea of what it looks like.
No, the photo below isn't how I felt afterwards... the maze is fun, but really the prop display at the entry is truly the heart of the attraction.
Universal has created a wristband "fastpass" type of entry system for the Mummy Maze - you stop by a nearby table and pick up a colored wristband for a later time. The idea is to allow for crowds to be more evenly put through the building - supposedly allowing for more effective scares.
Of course a limited amount of Mummy merchandise is available just outside the attraction...
By the way - as you know, Universal is a fully working movie studio. They are currently shooting Mummy III - The Scorpion King on the lot, below you can see a quick photo of one of the outdoor sets in the Little Europe section of the backlot. Actor "The Rock" was spotted, but was out of sight before he could be photographed.
Shrek Live
A new stage show for Shrek is planned for May 18th - it will be performed in the courtyard in front of the old Conan theater.
It looks smaller scale - along the lines of the Whoville or Rocky & Bullwinkle types of show. We'll have an update on the site about it once it opens up.
Other quick items
The new entry fountain was finally finished this week - they've added a sculpture of movie makers on a platform that has mist coming out of it. Very nice.
The old River Princess snack stand (below) is getting a remodel to look like the adjacent Flintstones carnival area.
Also, while disembarking from the tour tram - which is right next to the Universal Amphitheater - visitors were treated to a bird's eye view of arriving celebrities for the Academy of Country Music Awards Show. Below (center) is singer Billy Gilman, others spotted included Patti Page, Vince Gill and Faith Hill.
