Meet MousePlanet at the D23 EXPO

The 2017 D23 Expo kicks off this Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center, with three jam-packed days of panels, presentations, celebrity appearances, shopping opportunities, and more. Once again, MousePlanet will be in the middle of all of the action with live coverage from the convention floor. Whether you're attending the whole expo, visiting one day, or watching from home, turn to MousePlanet all weekend long.

MousePlanet will again have a booth in the Expo Emporium, where you can stop and recharge your batteries (mental and physical), meet MousePlanet staff and writers, and enter fun contests.

Fastpass and dining package information for Fantasmic

When Fantasmic! returns next Monday, July 17, there will be five different ways to see the show, depending on how early you're willing to get to the park to obtain a Fastpass, or whether you're willing to pay for a dining package. Dining packages for the Main Street Electrical Parade remain open through August 20, so the return of Fantasmic has not brought a premature end to those packages.

We've prepared this guide to help you navigate the options and make the best plan for your visit. Starting from most expensive and working down to the no-charge options, here are the ways to see Fantasmic at Disneyland, along with some general notes that apply to all viewing areas.

Reservations for the dining packages open 60 days in advance. Book online or call (714) 781-3463 between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Pacific Time daily.

Option #1: Reserve a Fantasmic dinner package at the Blue Bayou

The Fantasmic dining package at the Blue Bayou is a three-course prix fixe (fixed price) meal, with your choice of starter, entree, and dessert. Dinner service begins at 4 p.m. The restaurant will also accept regular (non-Fantasmic dining) reservations and Main Street Electrical Parade dining packages, so the availability of Fantasmic packages may be limited for the first month while MSEP wraps up its run.

No additional information was provided about children's menu entrees, and cast members at the Disney Dine Line were unable to provide menu specifics.

The cost is $65 for adults, $25 for ages 3 to 9. Tax and gratuity are not included. Premium and Premier passholders receive a 15 percent discount; all other passes receive a 10 percent discount. This package no longers includes the previously offered souvenir Fantasmic parade cushion.

This location can accommodate many dietary restrictions. Book by phone so the cast member can note your restrictions when you make the reservation (the online system does not provide an opportunity to disclose that) and then ask to speak with a manager or chef when you arrive to discuss specifics.

Guests who purchase this package will receive a Fastpass ticket to watch the show from a reserved viewing area. Dine line cast members would not confirm where the viewing area is, but another CM source tells us that guests from the Blue Bayou and River Belle Terrace will share the same central viewing area. In past years, this area has offered only ground seating, with accomodations available for guests with disabilities.

Option #2: Reserve a Fantasmic dinner package at the River Belle Terrace

The River Bell Terrace restaurant will offer a three-course prix fixe Fantasmic dinner, including starter, entree and dessert.

New this year is the option to upgrade to a Premium package for the 8:00 p.m. show only, for $15 per person. When you upgrade, you will be seated at a table on the River Belle Terrace patio, where you can remain at your table to watch the show. You must book this option by phone, as premium viewing is not offered on the Disneyland web site.

Option #3: Reserve a Fantasmic On the Go meal at Hungry Bear Restaurant

The On the Go meal at Hungry Bear offers a more flexible option for those who don't want to devote the time or money to one of the table service options.

The Hungry Bear Restaurant will serve a special menu from 3 to 8 p.m. on Fantasmic nights, and customers select a pick-up time when they make their reservation. Seating is available at the restaurant.

Adult entree options include choice of the following, accompanied by a kale and garbanzo bean salad, cranberry-apricot grains, and wild rice medley:

  • Cedar Salt Roasted Salmon
  • BBQ Chicken
  • Blackberry BBQ Pork Ribblettes
  • Mushroom and Leek Frittata

The Disney Parks Blog says adult meals are served with a natural soda, and that children's meals include a choice of milk, bottled water, or juice box. No additional information was provided about children's menu entrees, and cast members at the Disney Dine Line were unable to provide menu specifics. It does not appear that this package includes dessert, as previous on-the-go meals have.

This location can accommodate many dietary restrictions. Book by phone so the cast member can note your restrictions when you make the reservation (the online system does not provide an opportunity to disclose that) and then ask to speak with a manager or chef when you arrive to discuss specifics.

The cost is $29.99 for adults and $19.99 for ages 3 to 9. Tax and gratuity are not included. Premium and Premier passholders receive a 15 percent discount; all other passes receive a 10 percent discount.

Guests who purchase this package will receive a Fastpass ticket to watch the show from a reserved viewing area. Dine line cast members would not confirm where the viewing area is, but another CM source tells us it will be the west side of the viewing area along the Rivers of America, near Harbour Galley. This area is standing room only, though accomodations will be made for guests with disabilities.

Option #4: Get a Fastpass the day you wish to see the show

Fastpass tickets will be distributed from mobile ticket carts starting at park opening. We expect the carts will once again be stationed on the Big Thunder Trail. Tickets will be distributed while supplies last, or up to one hour before show time., whichever comes first. The tickets will indicate the show time, return time and assigned viewing section.

As before, Fastpass distribution will begin with the first show. When those tickets are distributed, tickets for the second show will become available. Dine line cast members would not confirm where the Fastpass viewing area is, but another CM source tells us it will include the east side of the viewing area along the Rivers of America, near River Belle Terrace, as well as the "second tier" area in front of Cafe Orleans and the French Market.

Your park ticket must have been used for admission before you can get a Fastpass ticket. This means you can't send one member of the family in to get Fastpass tickets for everyone, while the rest of the family sleeps in at the hotel. Likewise, passholders can not get Fastpass tickets for their entire family unless everyone has already entered the park. However, so long as all tickets and passes have been used for admission that day, you can send a runner to get tickets for your entire group.

The Fantasmic Fastpass is not linked to the Resort Fastpass system, and will not prevent you from collecting another Fastpass immediately. We do not yet know how Fantasmic will be incorporated into the MaxPass product when it debutes.

Option #5: Wait for a standby spot

A standby section will provide "limited standby viewing" for people without a Fastpass ticket. This viewing area will open at the same time the reserved Fastpass areas open for each show. Dine line cast members would not confirm where the standby viewing area is, but another CM source tells us it will include the bridge over Pirates of the Caribbean.

Note: Disney will clear the entire Fantasmic viewing area before each show, so you no longer have the option of arriving hours before the show and camping out for a spot.

General notes:

  • The Fastpass system is in place for the first two showings of Fantasmic each day. If a third show is scheduled or added, the entire viewing area is open on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • In the event the showing of Fantasmic for which you hold a Fastpass ticket is cancelled, you may not use that ticket for another show time or date. This applies to dining package tickets as well.
  • Children under 3 do not need a Fastpass ticket.
  • Dining package customers can select their preferred show time when you make your reservation.
  • As with all dining packages, there is no refund of your dining package in the event your scheduled performance of Fantasmic is cancelled.
  • Dining packages can be booked via Disneyland.com, or by calling 714-781-DINE.
  • Same-day reservations may be made, subject to availability, up to one hour in advance via Disneyland.com or by calling 714-781-DINE.
  • Same-day walk up reservations may also be made at Blue Bayou, River Belle Terrace and Hungry Bear Restaurant, based on availability.
  • A credit card is required to reserve one of the dining packages, and there is a $10 per-person cancellation fee if you cancel the reservation less than 24 hours in advance, or no-show for your reservation.

I have a Fastpass—now what?

Your Fastpass will include your assigned viewing area, show time, and return time. You will also be told when and where to line up before the show. The earlier you join the line, the earlier you will enter the viewing area and the better your chance of grabbing a better spot. We expect that Big Thunder Trail area will again be used as the return queue for Fantasmic.

CHOC-tastic discount ticket promotion

We have the details of the 2017 CHOC-tastic discount ticket promotion for those who participate in the 2017 CHOC Walk on Sunday, August 27 at the Disneyland Resort.

In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase discounted Disneyland tickets during the CHOC-tastic promotion. Walkers who meet the $85 fund raising minimum can purchase a 1-Day 1-Park Disneyland Resort ticket for $57 (regularly $91 to $124), or a Disneyland Resort 1-Day Park Hopper ticket for $86 (regularly $151 to $174).

The tickets can only be purchased by registered walkers in person at the Disneyland Resort on the day of the walk. You must present your CHOC Walk in the Park wristband to a Disneyland Resort Ticket Booth to purchase the discounted tickets. Each walker with a valid wristband can purchase up to five tickets, which represents a savings of up to $440.

The tickets are valid starting Sunday, August 27, 2017, and must be used by September 23, 2017. The tickets are not valid September 1 to 4; September 15, or September 20 to 22.

Registration is now officially open for the 2017 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 27, 2017 at the Disneyland Resort.

  • Fundraising Bears pay nothing at the time of registration, but must raise a minimum of $85 before the event to participate.
  • Busy Bears pay a fee of $95 at the time of registration to secure their place at the walk. CHOC will mail the event T-shirt and wristband before the walk.

  • 10th Annual Taste of Downtown Disney – Thursday, August 10. Ticket information has not been released, so keep an eye on the event website for further details.
  • CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, August 27. Registration is now open.
  • Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31 through September 3. This event adds to the Labor Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.

  • Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 9–12. This event adds to the Veteran's Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.

2018

  • Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – January 11–14, 2018. Registration has been delayed, and will open at a later, unspecified date.
  • Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
  • Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Originally scheduled for May 10-13, 2018, but runDisney has since removed the date from the event listing. Registration was scheduled to open June 27, 2017; no updated information has been released.

School Holidays

Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2017

  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
  • Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Military

2017 Military Salute Offer

Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017.

At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel.

Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort.

Ticket discounts

Through December 16, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:

  • Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $156 each [an increase of $13 from the 2016 offer]
  • Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $181 each [a new option for 2017]

Disneyland tickets may be used through December 19, 2017, except that the tickets may not be used April 9–23, 2017.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are nontransferable and must be used by December 19, 2017.

Hotel discounts

The new offer is valid most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2017. Like the ticket offer, hotel discounts are not valid April 9–23, 2017

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30 to 40 percent off, based on room category.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows spouses (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.

Annual Pass Monthly Payment Program

California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

  • Premier Annual Passport ($1,439 new or renewal) – valid at both Disneyland Resort and Florida's Walt Disney World Resort; includes parking and digital PhotoPass downloads. No blockout dates.
  • Disney Signature Plus Pass ($1,049 new/$989 renewal) – includes discounts, parking, and digital PhotoPass downloads. No blockout dates.
  • Disney Signature Pass ($849 new/$799 renewal) – includes discounts, parking, and digital PhotoPass downloads. Some blockout dates, including December holidays and other peak days.
  • Disney Deluxe Pass ($619 new/$579 renewal) – includes some discounts. Some blockout dates, including December holidays and other peak days.
  • Southern California Annual Passport ($469 new/$449 renewal) – includes some discounts. Many blockout dates, including Saturdays, December holidays and other peak days.
  • Southern California Select Annual Passport ($339 new/$329 renewal) – includes some discounts. This pass has the most blockout dates, including all weekends, December holidays and other peak days.

Southern California CityPASS

Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket.

When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website.

You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

  • Add a second day at LEGOLAND for $25. Purchase this upgrade at LEGOLAND on the day you use your CityPASS.
  • Add LEGOLAND Water Park for $30 for ages 3+ ($5 for ages 2 and under). Purchase this upgrade at LEGOLAND on the day you use your CityPASS.
  • Upgrade your Disneyland ticket to another ticket or annual passport of equal or greater value. For the current Southern California CityPASS, a credit of $295 for ages 10+ ($283 for ages 3-9) will be applied toward another ticket of equal or greater value. Purchase the upgrade at Disneyland before the end of your third visit.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.


ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).


Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Southern California residents

The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017.

You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up.

You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket.

If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.

There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017.

You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores.

Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.


Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
