Writer's note: Before Facebook Live, Periscope, and the plethora of other live video streaming services out there on the internet, there were a number of sites featuring "webcams" looking at different places around the World. Disney participated in that too. Well-more than a decade ago, I remember sitting in Chicago during cold winter days sneaking looks at the one Magic Kingdom installed high atop Main Street Station looking toward Cinderella Castle, hoping to catch a moment of one of the parades or the fireworks. Remember, of course, in the "earlier" days of the World Wide Web, internet speeds were much slower, so the webcams were more like stop-motion animation, with just a frame captured every now and then, and the image size was rather small.

While that Main Street U.S.A. webcam was disabled long ago, from time to time, Disney Parks Blog picks up that same sort of idea, but with the modern technology used for its #DisneyParksLIVE Stream events. The next one is scheduled for tonight (August 22), when Disney Parks Blog presents "Rivers of Light" live from Disney's Animal Kingdom at 8:40 p.m. EDT. (7:40 p.m. CDT, 6:40 p.m. MDT, 5:40 p.m. PDT). Use this link to watch the show live or to catch a replay (until the event, the link will take you to the Disney Parks Blog announcement of the #DisneyParksLIVE event; as showtime approaches, refresh the page if necessary, or clear your cache, return to this Article and select our link to the show again).

Summer is winding down, so it is also your last week to catch The Music of Pixar Live! A Symphony of Characters over at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The final show is scheduled August 27, 2017. With the back section of the park closed for its "Extreme Makeover: Theme Park Edition" (also known as the addition of Toy Story Land coming 2018, and the addition of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge coming 2019), the August 13 closing of The Great Movie Ride to make way for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, and now the finale of the concert series, we hope to soon hear more news about the park's fall and winter entertainment offerings and will pass it along when we do. Now, on with the latest...

More Grand Avenue Details Revealed

A few weeks ago, we reported that the remaining section of the former Streets of America and the Muppets Courtyard were being developed into a new area at Disney's Hollywood Studios to be called the "Grand Avenue Area." As you may recall, earlier this summer, the Muppet*Vision 3D theater building received new signage naming it the "Grand Arts Theatre."

The remaining portions of The Streets of America are becoming a part of the new Grand Avenue Area between Star Tours (which continues to operate) and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the new land due to open in 2019 in the distance where the cranes are located. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

As we also reported in that Update, at the end of July, Disney Parks Blog announced the new BaseLine Tap House coming to that area in "a quaint brick building" that "celebrates the revitalization of Downtown Los Angeles" which is the setting for the new Grand Avenue Area. At the time, we were left with some questions about how all the remaining pieces will fit together in the newly themed and named Grand Arts Area.

The former Writer's Stop location now has a brick facade matching the description of the BaseLine Tap House. New trees and light fixtures were recently installed in the area as well. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

The latest tidbit of Disney Parks Blog information about Grand Avenue starts to answer some of those questions.

Inspired by the revitalization and the vibrant culture of present-day downtown Los Angeles, Grand Avenue is where vintage office buildings and warehouses are being converted to exciting new uses. Guests will soon see facades for “merchants” appearing in this area for a music shop, loft apartments, a tailor and more, with each window on the street featuring charming displays.

* * * *

The current Muppets Courtyard will become Grand Park, an urban square off Grand Avenue surrounded by shops and restaurants like PizzeRizzo and Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano. Guests can already see changes in the area, with the Muppets theater being renamed “Grand Arts Theatre” and boasting a brand-new marquee. But, not to worry – Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang continue to star in their hilarious and irreverent “Muppet*Vision 3D” show.

Then, leave it to some folks on social media this past week to note something that had previously escaped my understanding but, interestingly enough, not my camera. The construction wall theming at PizzeRizzo while it was being built was very much in the style of the New York City Subway carried over from the adjacent New York Street. Indeed, even after it opened, the interior had the look and feel of a (theme park's take on a) New York City pizza place, with New York City Subway signs like those that once adorned New York Street.

Some of the former New York Street decorations on the walls of PizzeRizzo included a New York City-style subway sign. File Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

But, hidden in plain sight in the details of the Muppets-themed advertising on the walls have been references to Grand Avenue since the restaurant opened. Indeed, one advertisement, even made it clear that the attached restrooms faced Grand Avenue. Details matter.

The ad on the wall of PizzeRizzo shows the restrooms in the area (which are sponsored by Gonzo's Royal Flush) are "located" on Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. If only we had paid more attention to the details back in February. Previously unpublished photo from February 2017 by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney Parks Moms Panel Search Opens September 6

The Disney Parks Moms Panel, created in 2008, is Disney's version of a moderated forum for discussing questions about Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, runDisney events, Disney Vacation Club, and Disney Cruise Line. Disney picks folks who "specialize" in one of those areas from outside the Company and the industry: specifically, it selects folks who are not only not Disney employees, but are not employed in the travel, hotel or theme park industries in any capacity (or immediately a family member of or currently reside with any folks that are). Panelists do receive a trip to a Disney Destination for themselves and up to three family members and/or park tickets for their participation on the panel.

This year's search for panelists opens September 6, 2017, at noon (EDT), and runs through September 13, 2017, at noon (EDT). Disney encourages applications from folks that are the kind of people whose "friends and colleagues always seek ... out for heartfelt advice on planning a Disney Vacation."

While the name is "moms panel" and the website often discusses "parental" advice, the search is gender neutral; Disney's policy is equal opportunity for all applicants without regard to any basis prohibited by state or federal law. Of course, an ability to communicate clearly with parents considering a Disney Vacation is one of the things Disney is looking for in selecting panelists.

If you are interested, visit the Moms Panel's search page and be sure to read all of the guidelines for applicants. To those who apply: good luck.

Disney Springs Hosts American Idol Audition Kiosk

Last Friday, Disney Springs welcomed thousands of American Idol hopefuls to audition for the relaunch of the show coming this fall to Disney-owned ABC-TV. Though not announced in advanced, previous Idol winners Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen, and Ruben Studdard made special appearances and greeted participants.

Several previous "American Idol" winners along with Mickey Mouse welcomed thousands who visited Disney Springs on August 18, hoping to get on the soon-to-be-relaunched show. Video © Disney.

Though the Idol audition bus tour continues with stops in Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Denver, Louisville, and more through September 14, Disney Springs visitors can continue to create and submit their own audition videos at the new pop-up audition kiosk located at the Marketplace stalls during regular operating hours through mid-September. Singers must be at least 15 years old to audition.

Additional details, eligibility requirements, submission forms, terms and conditions, and more tour and show information are available at americanidol.com.

New Fantasmic! Dessert & VIP Viewing Experience

Disney's Hollywood Studios now offers a new Fantasmic! Dessert & VIP Viewing Experience for $39/person over age 9; and $19/children 3-9. Unlike the dessert parties and dinner packages, this new option includes a dessert snack box featuring a mix of sweet and savory items that guests pick up at the theater prior to show time plus a special "light-up" credential that allows entry into the reserved viewing area.

Adults receive chocolate-covered strawberries, cheesecake, a chocolate cupcake, apple crisp, California trail mix and cheese and crackers. Kids receive chocolate pudding with crushed chocolate cookies and gummy worms, confetti popcorn, grapes and a vanilla cake bite featuring Sorcerer Mickey. All guests receive a bottle of water and a specialty alcoholic (if desired and of legal age) or non-alcoholic beverage in a light-up keepsake Fantasmic! cup.

More information and reservations are available at DisneyWorld.com/dining or by calling (407)WDW-DINE.

Views Around the World

Saturday, August 19, was Disney PhotoPass Day in the Walt Disney World Parks, and we have views from all four – Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom – and a few more to share. Disney PhotoPass Day also celebrated the "Dream Big, Princess" campaign which encourages kids to draw inspiration from Disney Princess stories. While we share our photos and examples of the special PhotoPass Day photos (in which I appear), Disney Parks Blog announced that the "Dream Big, Princess" project itself continues outside the parks too, with the talents of a group of female photographers from 15 different countries creating images that show kids "what's possible if you dream big."

One Passholder's Tip

This section of the Update provides our MousePlanet readers with the benefit of my years of experience as a longtime Walt Disney World Four Parks Annual Passholder, and lots of personal trial and errors, one (hopefully weekly) tip at a time.

One Passholder's Tip: Week 27
Annual Passholders are not required to use the Passholders touchpoints!

Only Annual Passholders are allowed to enter at the Passholder touchpoints. Passholders, however, may enter at any open touchpoint. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Since this past winter, the Walt Disney World theme parks have offered Passholders entry lanes at the park gates. While it is true that these lanes are for Annual Passholders only, Passholders may enter the parks from any available touchpoint. Apparently, confusion about this sometimes causes the Passholders lines to well-exceed other nearby lanes. Be governed accordingly.

Don't keep it to yourself!
Send us your news tips, rumors, and comments.

This and That

…Annual Passholders can "Bring-a-Friend" through September 30, 2017, by purchasing a 1-Day Magic Your Way Park Hopper ticket for $79 plus tax. The tickets are not available online; they can only be purchased at Guest Relations locations and ticket windows. Passholder must be present with valid Walt Disney World annual pass card and photo ID. Passholders may buy tickets for up to 6 guests and all tickets must be used on the date of purchase.

…Following last Saturday's Disney PhotoPass Day, Disney Parks Blog announced another special PhotoPass opportunity at Disney's Animal Kingdom to celebrate the recent 75th anniversary of the release of Walt Disney's Bambi. From August 25 to 27, from 10:20 a.m. until 4 p.m., Thumper and Miss Bunny will be outside Conservation Station at Rafiki's Planet Watch for meeting, greeting, and, of course, Disney PhotoPass photo opportunities. A roving Disney PhotoPass photographer (as in the one not accompanying the characters) can include a "Bambi and friends" Magic Shot or prop in photos too.

…Perhaps not surprising given the rollout of the new Minnie Vans personal transportation around Walt Disney World Resort, today marks the end the the Express Transportation inside-the-park to inside-the-park bus add-on option that began as an experiment this past winter. While the Minnie Vans do have access to better pick-up and drop-off locations than other ride sharing services, they do not have the convenience of being located inside the parks; Minnie Van riders still have to go through bag check before passing through the touchpoints at each park they visit rather than just the first park visited when using Express Transportation. Disney's Magical Express, the airport-to-Resort transportation service, remains in operation and was not related to the park-to-park Express Transportation service.

The Express Transportation option is no longer available for purchase. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

…At the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival which starts August 31 and runs through November 13, Annual Passholders can receive up to three free "specialty buttons" during the run of the event – one, each month – by visiting the Festival Center (while supplies last). Valid Walt Disney World Annual Pass card and photo ID required for buttons. Additionally, when making purchases from new Future World marketplaces, more themed buttons are available as well.

…Disney Vacation Club Members and their guests can "channel their inner scoundrel" at pirate-themed Halloween parties at Disney's Contemporary Resort on October 31. From 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., the reservations-required parties in the Ballroom of the Americas will include a DJ dance party, a pirate-themed selfie station, carnival-style games with prizes, face painting, a character photo, plus Halloween desserts, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages and a chance to meet a Walt Disney World Ambassador. Tickets are $25/person through DVC Member Services, (800)800-9800, beginning on August 24. Guests will each receive a "Buccaneer Booty Bag" to fill with "treats and treasures." Costumes are not required, but, should you wish to wear one, be sure to read the guidelines.

…Continuing to keep up with Disney's participation in Sea Turtle Conservancy, we have another TourDeTurtles.org update as of last night: the satellite trackers report Cruz heading south along the Florida coast near Lake Worth, FL, while Sally has rounded the southern tip of Florida, swam out into the Gulf of Mexico past Key West, and was last reported heading northeast toward Naples and Fort Myers, FL.

Satellite tracking places Cruz the sea turtle, released at Disney's Vero Beach on July 29, again near the Resort. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

…And, finally, for those that like to skip over the "Writer's Note" atop the Updates, the next #DisneyParksLIVE Stream event is scheduled for tonight (August 22), when Disney Parks Blog presents "Rivers of Light" live from Disney's Animal Kingdom at 8:40 p.m. EDT., 7:40 p.m. CDT, 6:40 p.m. MDT, 5:40 p.m. PDT. Use this link to watch the show live or to catch a replay (until the event, the link will take you to the Disney Parks Blog announcement of the #DisneyParksLIVE event; as showtime approaches, refresh the page if necessary, or clear your cache, return to this Article and select our link to the show again).

…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend.
