Disneyland Resort closes due to COVID-19 concerns

The Walt Disney Company took the lead among entertainment companies last Thursday, announcing an unprecedented series of operational changes in response to the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19. As of Monday, March 16, all Disney Parks around the world are now closed, the four ships of the Disney Cruise Line are empty of passengers, and Adventures by Disney trips have been canceled. Participants in Disney's College Program have had their tenure cut short, and even the theatrical release of the live action film Mulan has been postponed.

The closure of the domestic theme parks are officially through March 31, 2020, but in light of guidance issued Sunday night by the Centers for Disease Control, it seems unlikely the parks will reopen that quickly. The situation seems to change hourly, and MousePlanet is trying to keep our readers up to date through this article, Walt Disney Company Operational Responses to COVID-19.  We will also continue to publish this weekly Update article as a summary of sorts, but the most current information will always be found on our main page.

The following is the situation as of March 16, 2020, with details about hotel reservations, ticket refunds, annual passport extensions, and more. This information is subject to change at any moment, so we recommend that you bookmark our main COVID-19 article and refresh that for the most current information.

Theme Parks and Parking

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland

There have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at the Disneyland Resort, but the Resort heeded guidance from the state of California that gatherings with more than 250 people be canceled., and announced that both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will be closed March 14 through 31, 2020. Official information is posted at disneyland.disney.go.com/travel-information/

Disney said that cast members impacted by the closure will be paid for their shifts scheduled through March 31.

The Mickey and Friends and Pixar Pals parking structures are closed to the public during the shutdown, as is the Toy Story parking lot. Downtown Disney parking is available in the Simba parking lot off of Disneyland Drive, between West Katella Avenue and Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel.

Tickets and Annual Passports

Theme Park Tickets

Guests that have already purchased park tickets for visits between March 14 and 31, 2020, have the following options to visit the parks in the future:

  • Unused 1-Day Tier 1-5 Tickets are valid through December 30, 2021. Valid dates of admission depend upon the type of ticket. Check the FAQ at disneyland.disney.go.com/faq/tickets/ticket-dates/
  • Unused multi-day tickets are valid for a future visit through January 12, 2022.

It is not clear from the official verbiage what happens with partly used theme park tickets. For example, visitors who purchased a 5-day ticket but were only able to use three days before the parks closed, or visitors who purchased the SoCal Resident ticket and are unable to use the second or third admission day due to the closure. We have reached out to Disney for an answer to these issues, and have not yet received a response.

Annual Passports

According to Disneyland Resort's Travel Information post:

  • Annual Passholders who have Passports that are valid during the closure period, will have their Passport expiration date extended based on pass type and level of access due to the impacts of the closure. The extended date will be reflected on your Passport account prior to Disneyland Resort's reopening of the parks.
  • Annual Passholders on the monthly payment program will remain on the current payment schedule and continue to make their scheduled payments. These Annual Passholders will have their Passport expiration date extended based on pass type and level of access due to the impacts of the closure, and will not be required to make any payments during that extended period.
  • For Disney Flex Passholders, Disneyland will cancel reservations for the duration of the closure without penalty.

Readers have asked if Disney will extend the date that the new refillable Annual Passholder popcorn bucket will be valid once the parks reopen. We have reached out to Disney for an answer to this question, and will share their response.

Hotels

The Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, and Grand Californian Hotel will remain open through checkout time Monday, March 16.

Guests may cancel room-only hotel reservations for scheduled stays during the closure and receive a full refund.

During the closure, guests may cancel Disneyland vacation packages booked through the Walt Disney Travel Company and receive a full refund (excluding third-party products and fees).

Guests who have questions about or need to cancel or reschedule their vacations can call (714) 520-5050. Disneyland Resort anticipates high call volume and if you are unable to call before check-in, there will be no penalty or assessed fee for canceling a room reservation after your check-in date. Many reservations may be canceled. online without calling. The link for cancellations is disneyland.disney.go.com/resort-cancellation.

Dining and Activity Reservations

Guests may cancel reservations for experiences scheduled during the closure period at any time and receive a full refund for:

  • Dining
  • Disney Princess Breakfast Adventures
  • Savi's Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers
  • Droid Depot
  • Disneyland Resort VIP Tours
  • Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

Readers have asked if the unused portion of their Sip & Savor Pass can be refunded if they are unable to return to the Resort once the parks reopen, or if the parks reopen after the Food & Wine Festival is scheduled to conclude. We have reached out to Disney for an answer to this question, and will share their response.

Special Events Tickets

During the temporary closure of the Disneyland Resort, Guests will be refunded the purchase price for any separately ticketed special events that were planned during the closure, such as Food & Wine Festival seminars.

Guests will automatically receive a refund within 30 days and do not need to contact the Disneyland Resort.

Downtown Disney

Downtown Disney operates with modified operating hours of 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., daily. All Disney-owned and operated stores in Downtown Disney will close as of Tuesday, March 17. This closing includes the flagship World of Disney store, as well as The Disney Dress Shop, Disney Home, Disney Pin Traders, Marceline's Confectionery, and WonderGround Gallery.

Individual shops and restaurants may have different operating hours or may close entirely.

On March 15, California recommended all bars and pubs to close, including wine bars and breweries. Restaurants that remain open should reduce their occupancy by half, and the state encourages these businesses to offer take-out and curbside delivery. Shortly thereafter, Starbucks announced that it would close some locations and eliminate the use of seating at all of its company-operated stores. The company has two locations in Downtown Disney; the East Starbucks location has closed, but the West Starbucks location remains open for take-out only.

Second Harvest Food Bank to receive Disney food donation

Disney Parks Blog announced that Disneyland Resort will donate excess food during the Resort's temporary closure to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. The donation includes excess inventory of dairy, fruit, vegetables, packaged goods, and banquet meals. The Second Harvest Food Bank serves over 300,000 people in Orange County, and is a frequent beneficiary of donations of both food and volunteer hours from the Disneyland Resort.

Avengers Campus gets opening date

Disney's big announcement of last week was quickly overshadowed by the COVID-19 crisis. During the 2020 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, new Disney CEO Bob Chapek shared that the Avengers Campus will open at Disney California Adventure on July 18, 2020.

The first phase of the opening will include a new attraction, Web Slingers: Spider-Man Adventure, a meet-and-greet area where visitors can encounter their favorite Marvel characters, the WEB supplies store, and the Pym Test Kitchen and Tasting Lab.

All of these Downtown Disney businesses closed in 2018 to make room for construction of a planned fourth Disney hotel. With Disney canceling its hotel project, we're waiting to see what Disney does with the vacant buildings.

  • ESPN Zone – building is being used as a temporary space for the Disney Performing Arts program.

Disney Grand Californian Hotel

2021
  • Coming Soon!

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $199 for ages 3 and up, a $20 increase over the 2019 offer.

For an additional $55, you can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, and which is a savings of up to $101 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket.

Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

Special Ticket Offer for Kids Everywhere

If you do not live in the qualifying ZIP codes for the Southern California Resident Ticket described above, Disney has another offer valid for travel on the same dates – but this one is only for children ages 3-9. This ticket also comes with a 13-day fuse, so plan your visits accordingly.

The Child Ticket Offer is also valid for travel January 7 through May 21, 2020. The price is $199 for ages 3-9, and each ticket includes one Magic Morning entry when purchased in advance from Get Away Today, calling (714) 781-4636, or online at Disneyland.com.

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Ticket Tier calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
