Permits hint at Candlelight's return

Construction permits filed last week with the City of Anaheim indicate that Disneyland is planning to host the Candlelight Procession in 2021. The permits cover installation of the Candlelight Procession stage and seating area around the Main Street Train Station. No event date was listed in the permit filing, but Candlelight is traditionally held on the first weekend of December, which for this year would be December 4 and 5.

The Candlelight Processional could return for 2021. MousePlanet file photo.

The Candlelight Processional is one of the oldest traditions at Disneyland. Started by Walt Disney in 1958 as a community appreciation event, the show features a candlelight choir made up of cast members and community choir members, all accompanied by the Disneyland orchestra. Celebrity guest narrators read the Christmas story in between songs.

There are usually two performances each on Saturday and Sunday nights. Disneyland rarely officially announces the celebrity narrator in advance, and in recent years has sucessfully kept even a rumor from leaking before the pre-show sound check on Saturday afternoon.

After trying a few times to make this a larger public offering with dining packages and reserved viewing, Disney generally treats Candlelight as a private event that just happens to take place inside a theme park during its normal operating day. Invited guests, including corporate sponsors, community leaders, senior executives, Club 33 members and members of the media, watch the performance from a reserved viewing area in Town Square. Standby viewing is available on Main Street, U.S.A.; fans often wait all day for a spot to see the performances.

Tickets still available for two Merriest Nites

It's been three weeks since tickets to Disney's new Merriest Nites went on sale, and November 16 and 30 are not yet sold out. Beyond whatever implications that may hold for this extra-cost event, it's a good indication that the entire Disneyland Resort will be relatively uncrowded during those two weeks. The events are the week before and the week after Thanksgiving week, which are always some of the weeks we recommend as being best for getting to see the holiday decorations without the holiday crowds.

Dates Ticket Price
Thursday, November 11 Sold Out
Tuesday, November 16 $165
Tuesday, November 30 $165
Tuesday, December 7 Sold Out
Thursday, December 9 Sold Out

And if you happen to want to add tickets to the Merriest Nite event during your trip, you can find them via the Disneyland website.

2021-2022
  • Halloween Time – September 3 through October 31.
  • Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure – select nights September 9 to October 31. The event is now sold out.
  • Dapper Day (unofficial event) – Fall Outing to Disneyland scheduled for November 13-14. More information on the event website.
  • 2022 D23 Expo – September 9–11, 2022 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
  • Disney's Merriest Nights at Disneyland – select nights November 11 - December 9. More information on the event website.

Postponed events:

  • Disneyland After Dark: Villains Nite – postponed from Thursday, April 30, 2020. Visitors who had already purchased a ticket to the sold-out event will automatically receive a ticket for the rescheduled event once a date is selected. However, anyone who purchased a ticket and prefers a refund can call (714) 781-4636 to request one.
  • Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite – postponed from Thursday, August 27, 2020. Visitors who had already purchased a ticket to the sold-out event will automatically receive a ticket for the rescheduled event once a date is selected. However, anyone who purchased a ticket and prefers a refund can call (714) 781-4636 to request one.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 2020.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
