Disney cancels Best Rate Program, reinstates former Annual Passholder discount program
What if you had a great idea, and your customers didn't like it? Well, if you're Walt Disney World and the idea is the Passholder Best Rate Program, you pull the program and bring back the program that it replaced.
Following an at-best lukewarm reaction to the Best Rate Program, Disney has returned to posting passholder discount codes with various prices for different times of the year. While there are some small changes, such as releasing multiple codes for shorter terms over a period of a couple of months concurrently, the program is basically the same as it was.
The Best Rate Program had promised passholders that they would be guaranteed to meet or beat the lowest publicly available rates for whichever time period that they had booked for, even if prices dropped after they made their reservation. However, there was confusion over what would be considered a publicly available rate, making those wanting to make reservations uncomfortable. In addition, some passholders discovered that a lower rate had been released for the second part of their trip, but since they had one reservation for the length of their stay, they were not eligible for the lower rate. On top of that, since reservations needed to be made at least 120 days in advance and modifying the reservation would incur a charge, they could not rework the reservation on two counts. Disney later dropped the requirement to 60 days, but that still didn't please passholders, many of whom preferred to take advantage of the old discount rates to make a last-minute decision to visit the resort for a spur-of-the-moment trip.
So kudos to Disney for recognizing that passholders generally plan their trips differently than those who visit less frequently and for changing the program back to what their customers wanted.
The new passholder discounts are currently available for check-ins through April 13. There is no longer a 60-day advance booking requirement. No change or cancellation fee will be charged if you make your modification more than five days before arrival. Reservations can be booked via the Passholder Web site (link) or by phone (the special number for passholders is available on the passholder site, or you should be able to use the general reservations number).
You can book up to three rooms per pass. According to Disney, passholders must present their valid adult pass at check-in. We have also heard that annual pass exchange vouchers may be accepted by front desk staff. If you book using these rates and do not have an annual pass, you will end up paying much more for your room. Additional per adult charges will apply if there are more than two adults (18 or older) per room. Advance reservations are required.
-
For reservations from now through February 4, use discount code BKE. Discounts are $30 off Value resorts, $60 off Moderate resorts and $96 off Deluxe resorts.
-
For reservations from February 5 through February 15, use discount code EZA. Discounts are $20 off Value Resorts, $40 off Moderate resorts and $70 off Deluxe resorts.
-
For reservations from February 16 through April 8, use discount code EZK. Discounts are $35 off Value resorts, $66 off Moderate resorts and $133 off Deluxe resorts.
Note: Passholders who already have a room booked through the Passholder Best Rate Program will not have their reservation affected by this change.

Everest holding cast previews this week, soft openings targeted for early February
Last Friday, Walt Disney Imagineering signed off on Expedition Everest and turned it over to Walt Disney World Operations. (Well, the official turnover didn't happen until 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, because they didn't want anything official to happen on Friday the 13th.) The attraction has passed its 72-hour test, and is ready to go.
Last week, the attraction hosted previews for Imagineers and contractors. Animal Kingdom cast members and Disney Partners in Excellence award recipients are riding today and tomorrow. Florida site cast members will get to ride Friday through next Monday. The first official general public riders will be next Thursday through Sunday, with the Disney Vacation Club members and Annual Passholders getting the first shot at the mountain.
The restricted area for the previews will run from the bathrooms in Asia all the way around to the far side of the Dinoland bridge. Only those attending the preview will be allowed in that area. A new viewing site on the peninsula across from the bathrooms is now open, with viewing tubes for a better look at the mountain.
The current target is to be open to day guests (soft opening, can close at any time or not open at all) by early February. It's not confirmed what date it will be, as there are a few small things to be ironed out yet, but if you are visiting in February, there's a good shot that you'll be able to get on.
We'll have photos and more information in a couple of weeks, following the DVC/AP sneak previews.
If you'll be there for the DVC/AP preview, or even if you'll just be in the park that day, join us for lunch on Saturday at 1:00 at Flame Tree Barbecue. Let us know that you're coming either on our MousePad discussion thread about the meet (link) or via email (link).
Pay-for-Fastpass rumor not true
There is a rumor wildly circulating on the Internet that Fastpasses may no longer be free at some point this year. This is not true. The rumor apparently started based on wording in the new Birnbaum's official guide to Walt Disney World. On page 25, it mentions that there is no charge for Fastpasses "at press time."
On the WDW Today podcast (link) last Wednesday, Len Testa reported that Bob Sehlinger of The Unofficial Guide had contacted the folks at Disney and Birnbaum's, who confirmed that it was a misprint, and that wording should have only applied to Disney's Magical Express. (We already expect Disney's Magical Express to begin charging a fee starting after the 18-month pilot program concludes at the end of October.) So stand down from red alert, folks.

Tarzan Rocks limps into retirement
As the Tarzan Rocks show enters its final week at Disney's Animal Kingdom, the show has already drastically modified one portion of the show following an accident last week. Last Tuesday, during the portion of the show where Tarzan is "flying" on the "vine" prior to picking up Jane and flying with her, the lift mechanism reportedly failed, sending the actor portraying Tarzan crashing down approximately 20 feet, landing on his back on the corner of the stage risers at the feet of the musicians, his arms still wrapped around the straps. He stood up and exited the stage under his own power, and the show was immediately cancelled.
Thankfully, we have heard that while the actor was "bruised up," he was otherwise fine. The "flying" portion of the show has been replaced by a shorter sequence where Tarzan and Jane "look to the horizon on both sides of the stage, Tarzan carries Jane on his shoulder briefly, and Jane does a short spinning stunt on a rope, with Tarzan spinning the rope."
With the show's final performance on January 21, it doesn't really make much sense to repair the mechanism, especially since the theater will be completely renovated and enclosed before the next production debuts late this year. Still, it's a shame that the production won't be able to hold its closing performances with the complete show.
Thanks for MousePad readers mtnbearcolorado and NitroStitch for the first-hand reports on our discussion forums (link).
ESPN The Weekend: The Preview
ESPN, Disney's sports cable network, returns to the Disney-MGM Studios for the third year with ESPN The Weekend on March 3-5. The event will feature at least two live telecasts each day from a set in front of the Sorcerer's Hat, including a season preview edition of Baseball Tonight, SportsCenter and Cold Pizza. ESPN Radio shows will also be broadcast live on Friday, March 3, including Mike and Mike in the Morning, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the Dan Patrick Show and SportsBash with Eric Kuselias. The next day will also feature a broadcast of a specal edition of The Baseball Show radio program.
Other events include special sports editions of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire-Play It, where guests will partner with an ESPN personality or sports star and periodic motorcades down Hollywood Boulevard where sports stars will be driven up to the Sorcerer's Hat stage for conversations with the ESPN anchors and Q&A sessions with park guests.
A visit from ESPN The Truck will allow fans to see some of the technology involved in putting together a broadcast. One kiosk on the truck will contain a replica SportsCenter desk, where fans can try their hand at being an anchor or play-by-play caller and take home their "Keep it Reel" audition DVD. Other kiosks include a photo shoot for a simulated ESPN The Magazine cover, a video games station and a location where fans can choose to watch to any of a menu of ESPN video sources.
Romance to be the theme of this year's Flower & Garden Festival
Details are beginning to emerge regarding the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival for 2006. The theme for the 13th annual event will be romance, featuring Donald and Daisy topiaries cruising through a floral tunnel of love, topiaries of Cinderella and Prince Charming "waltzing" amid blossoms and greenery and other Disney character topiaries based on happily-ever-after stories.
The seven-week event, to be held April 21 June 11, will feature 30 million blooms, specially designed floral beds, bonsai trees, rose gardens and plenty of Disney character topiaries. There will also be, as always, a number of special events and exhibits.
Minnie's Magnificent Butterfly Garden will return for a second year. The popular Great American Gardeners and Disney Gardening at Home series both return, as well. Kids' activities will include Tinker Bell's Fairy Garden and character meet and greets. The "see and sniff" Fragrance Garden at the France pavilion will display flowers used in several perfumes. Festival merchandise sales, guest speakers and demonstrations will again take place at the Festival Center. Themed weekends will include the I Dig Bugs weekend, the Art in the Garden weekend and the Mother's Day weekend, among others.
The schedule of Flower Power concerts is also now available, thanks to Steve Soares' great Walt Disney World Live Entertainment web site (link):

Grad Nite events announced
Disney Grad Nites (link) is scheduled for April 28-29 and May 5-6. On those nights, following an early close, the Magic Kingdom will be filled with partying high school seniors. The evenings will begin with "Blast-Off Parties" in two locations. One will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in DinoLand U.S.A at Disney's Animal Kingdom, while the other will take place in the Magic Kingdom from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
After the parties are done, Grad Nite will begin in earnest, running through the night. In addition to access to the Magic Kingdom attractions, events include live DJs, a "Riverboat Glow Cruise & Dance Party," an "All-Suds Foam Dance Zone," special decor and fireworks, a karaoke party, free arcade games and live concerts.
The live entertainment for the first weekend will feature headliner Fall Out Boy, as well as Frankie J, Omarion, Teddy Geiger and Fefe Dobson. The second weekend, Simple Plan will take over as headliner, while the rest of the acts will return.
Ears to the ground
Thanks to Matt Hochberg at MGMStudios.org (link), we now know the dates of the 2006 Star Wars Weekends. They will be held May 19-21 and 26-28, and June 2-4 and 9-11. Last year, Disney added two weekends due to high demand. It is unknown what the likelihood is of a repeat of the extension.
The Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue and the Spirit of Aloha Polynesian Revue are shrinking their advance booking window from one year to 180 days. No official word on the effective date yet, but we're hearing that December 31, 2006 is the cut-off and can still be booked now, and that January 1, 2007 will not become available for reservations until July 5, 2006. Again, however, that has not yet been confirmed.
There are a number of rumors circulating on the Internet that there will be a new character breakfast at the Disney-MGM Studios. While not yet confirmed, the indicators cited by the rumors would seem to be strong enough to indicate that there will be a Toy Story-themed breakfast held at the Hollywood & Vine buffet restaurant in the near future. This would mark the return of a character breakfast to the location after almost three years.

- Expedition Everest is scheduled to open in Spring 2006. The official opening press event is scheduled for April 7, just before the peak season of the two weeks surrounding Easter. DVC, Annual Passholder and Cast Member previews are January 26-29. The attraction passed its 72-hour test and was turned over from Walt Disney Imagineering to Walt Disney World Operations just after midnight on Saturday, January 14. (They wanted to wait until it was no longer Friday the 13th.). The attraction should be ready for the general public in early February, so look for soft openings to begin in that time frame.
- Tarzan Rocks scheduled to close on January 21, 2006. Its rumored replacement is a show based upon Finding Nemo, which would debut in November 2006 after the Theater in the Wild gets a complete makeover. The stage, lighting and sound system will all be gutted and the theater will be completely enclosed, as with the Lion King theater in Camp Minnie-Mickey.

- Polynesian Resort Work is now underway on the complete refurbishment and upgrading of rooms and hallways in all buildings, which is expected to be completed by June, 2006.
- Contemporary Resort The South Garden Wing is partially-open during refurbishment through September, 2006. Rumors indicate that the buildings may be completely gutted and rebuilt as Disney Vacation Club villas. However, another rumor states that new DVC lodgings will be built on the current site of the Disney Tennis Center at the resort, and there is no confirmation of the either rumor yet. Renovations on the rest of the resort are also underway, with the tower building being done one floor at a time and the North Garden Wing to follow, and are expected to run through October, 2006.
- Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa Phase I's four buildings and Phase II's eight units are complete, Construction on Phase III is underway, with the six units expected to open between June and December, 2006.
