Last chance to see Toontown

This Tuesday, March 8, 2022 is the final date to pay a visit to Mickey's Toontown before the entire land closes for a major transformation. When Toontown reopens sometime in 2023, it will debut the West Coast edition of the Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway attraction that opened in Florida in 2020. Disney's original announcement about the project was vague about what would happen to some current Toontown attractions. Disney has since confirmed that the Roger Rabbit Cartoon Spin attraction will remain, though concept art shows the adjacent fountain will be removed.

Likewise, the interactive musical fountain outside Mickey's house is out, but both Mickey and Minnie's Toontown abodes will remain. Disney says that Gadget’s Go Coaster, Goofy’s House and Donald’s Boat "will be re-imagined in new and exciting ways." All three still appear in the concept art Disney released in November, but we expect the two houses will be converted to photo opportunities instead of interactive or walk-through attractions. It's likely the roller coaster, Toontown's original attraction, will be rethemed to a character today's kids recognize more readily than Gadget, though that may also depend on how prominently the character appears in the upcoming Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers animated feature.

Missing entirely from Disney's announcement—and the concept art—is Chip & Dale's Treehouse, which we expect will be demolished. If Disneyland does ever expand Galaxy's Edge, some have suggested that there could be a walkway to the land from Toontown passing between Mickey's house and Gadget’s Go Coaster, which would necessitate the removal of the treehouse.

Food & Wine Festival highlights

The 2022 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival opened last Friday, and Todd Pickering was there to get a look at the annual favorite. He shared some tasting notes, and details of the Sip & Savor Pass. The pass is $57, and Magic Key and Disney Visa Card holders receive a $5 discount and a different lanyard.

We tend to go back and forth about whether the Sip and Savor Pass is a value, and we always recommend that you browse the event menus and run the numbers before you buy one. At $57 / $54 the pass is worth getting only if you use the eight tabs only to purchase the more expensive entree items, and are prepared to pay separately for everything under $7, which includes all desserts and non-alcoholic drinks. This of course will raise your overall spending, so unless you're planning to use the pass over several visits you might be better served just paying cash.

Todd said the Black & Tan Potato Puffs are the star of the Festival. Photo by Todd Pickering.

Todd's favorite dish: Black & Tan Beef Potato Puffs ($8.50 ) from the D*Lish booth. Todd says, "The gravy had a hearty stout flavor and the beef was melt in your mouth. Those sponges seemed to be little puffs of bread but they were super fluffy and you bit into them and they popped with lager beer flavor. Wow. SO good."

The Strawberry Cheesecake may look like a science experiment, but Todd raved about it. Photo by Todd Pickering.

Runner Up: Strawberry Cheesecake with Lemon Chantilly ($6.50) from the Berry Patch. Todd says, "The cheesecake seemed like way-too-pink cheesecake filling covered in way-too-sticky strawberry gel on top, with silly pearls and made for kids only. No, we LOVED it. It has a nice strawberry flavor and it makes you feel like a kid. Really whimsical and fun. Seriously loved it. Wish more lemon in whip cream due to the sweetness but otherwise wonderful."

Other noteworthy dishes:

  • Gyro-inspired Flatbread featuring Impossible Ground Beef ($6.75) from LA Style. "Fool your meat eater friends with all this flavor. This dish had such great balance. Not-too-spicy Impossible beef and fantastic schmear of hummus with a nice dollop of tzatziki but watch out: those crunchy, spicy little chick peas are not for the faint of heart. Ouch!"

  • Glazed BBQ pork belly ($8.50) from LA Style. Todd says "the pork belly melted in your mouth," but the furikake and togarashi topping does little to elevate the side of macaroni salad. He also adds of the garnish, "Orchids are edible but boring...don't eat them."

  • Mango-Carrot Gazpacho ($8.25) at Golden Dreams. "Two big shrimp with diced peppers to give it a bit of a kick, but the jalapeño crema itself wasn't too spicy. The mango makes the puree a bit grainy but the flavor blends beautifully with the carrot. This was really refreshing, and this tomato hater loved this gazpacho."
  • Honey-Orange-glazed Verlasso Salmon ($8.00) from Golden Dreams. "Sustainable farm raised salmon. A critic once said the measure of a good salad is perfectly dressed leaves, and this had it. The citrus vinaigrette was delicious and zingy and lots of orange flavor. The marinated orange peel with onion was somehow sweet and tender so don't be afraid of taking a bit of green, fish and peel in one bite."

Todd said both of the dishes from the Golden Dreams booth were worth the wait. Photo by Todd Pickering.

There were too many dishes to try on one visit, so look for more reviews on our Instagram account as we stop by for another round later this week.

2022

2022

  • Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival – March 4 to April 26, 2022
  • Disney Junior Fun Fest – Friday, April 29, 2022
  • Disneyland After Dark: Villains Nite at Disney California Adventure – March 8 & 10. All dates are sold out.
  • Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite – May 3, 4, 27 at Disneyland. All dates are sold out.
  • Grad Nites: May 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 25, 26 and 31; June 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 17
  • 2022 D23 Expo – September 9–11, 2022 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 25, 2021.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer

The Southern California Resident Ticket offers residents of Southern California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three weekdays between January 3 and May 26, 2022.

You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $199 for ages 3 and up, which is the same price as the 2020 offer. Of course, this new ticket is valid only Mondays through Fridays, and weekends are not included.

For an additional $60, you can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day. You can also add Disney Genie+ service for an additional $60 for the three days when purchased in advance. Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

There's no "fuse" on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on January 3 and wait until May 26 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it's probably best to purchase early so you're ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates.

Tickets expire on May 26, 2022, and unlike past years, do not have a spring blockout period. However, we estimate the peak Spring Break crowds will arrive April 11–22, 2022. so plan your visits accordingly.

Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.
